The stone is most certainly NOT a splinter.

A question I once asked Brandon about Plate
marianmi replied to Miyabi's topic in Stormlight Archive
I do not know of WoB, but I can't see why other weapons cannot be. If the blades and plates are invested objects, nothing can stop you investing in other type of object. Heck you can have a lasso as a shard if you want. Probably the KR had a school of fencing, and everyone was using blades. If you come to radiant school, and you learn there how to fight, you would learn with a sword, so you would want a Blade later on. -
Spren are attracted to gems - of particular type and cut. Spren are attracted to persons - that act in particular ways. I am sure that gemhearts are special, especially since they are the only thing that can "trap" stormlight. I don't think that it's a coincidence that gems can trap both spren (splinters) and stormlight (investiture). I would not be surprised if gems are the "physical body" of a shard (which one... that's interesting; if it's only one and not many). This would explain why chasmfiends are seen as "gods" by the parshendi. About spren, I agree that they represent the gateway - they do not modify the sDNA, or at least not permanently, only while the Bond is in place. About stormlight - I had similar thoughts, that during a Highstorm the spiritual "leaks" in the physical, so you have stormlight a direct representation of the spiritual power. You have the human (physical), the spren (link to cognitive), and the stormlight (spiritual). It's not clear why you need the cognitive here though, since in the other books there was no cognitive aspect in performing magic.

It would be sooo funny if the parshmen have them Right under everyone's noses...

I read that as: the tower must pick up the fallen title => Dalinar becomes radiant the crown must pick up the fallen title => Elhokar becomes radiant the spear must pick up the fallen title => Kaladin becomes radiant

Bold in spoilers my replies. I will correct some of the stuff. Thanks. Well, certainly it's shorter to write. And it refers to the same thing I tried to. Elantris is the basis of this. Dor is not specific to any shard, it's Sel's "spiritual" energy, which can be accessed through Devotion or Dominion. Thea idea is that you have only one power source, and the shards make it possible for you to access it. Similarly, in Mistborn, you have only one power source for all magics - allomancy is not drawing power from Preservation (Vin drawin from mists excepted), and hemalurgy is not drawing from Ruin (or, worse, Preservation ). So then the conclusion that, while you can get power from a shard (Vin + mists), usually the power tapped comes from a source specific to that planet, that was there already when the shards came. Now, for Roshar... I am considering here "spren" somehow a part of the investiture process. So in this case, you have a spren powering the fabrial, trapped, doing only the thing the fabrial was designed for. Then maybe you can get the spren out, use it for another fabrial. So neutral from this point of view. Negative would be where the spren is killed (and his investiture lost). And positive where the spren would do more things. Unfortunately, we have nothing but speculation.

Joking aside... i see a similarity between the atium cache and the blades cache

well, one was held by Mr. Davar, and I don't think the world knew about it. the world is not aware of 10 heralds walking around. the world is not aware of surgebinders walking around. the world was not aware of the parshendi until 5 years before. the world is not aware of many things. I'm sure they will turn up. my theory: THE KANDRA HAS THEM

One radiant sword was just handed to Sadeas. Another one was given to Amaram by our hero.

By power source I mean where the power comes from. Metal might get expended in allomancy, but it is not a source of power. It is a way of accessing the power, since the power exists in the spiritual realm. Similarly on Roshar, the power is in the spiritual realm. So while the stormlight might the power, it is not the power source.

Maybe when speaking the ideal, Kaladin got a "blessing", a sudden infusion of stormlight (one-time thing), more than he could hold, so it then got out of him and produced the effect of a small explosion in doing so. It's not a power of the windrunners, but something that could happen to anyone having that much stormlight. There are easier ways of explaining this than creating new powers...

* added spoiler tags * please let me know what I got wrong. I read elantris, warbreaker and mistborn many years ago, (warbreaker when it was a draft before being released). * the others I am using just for reference, the idea of this post is to discuss the magic system on roshar.

Humans also bond with spren. They are called surgebinders.

I was under the assumption that Honor created humans... while parshendi and aimians were already there they H&C came... Shin is a terraforming attempt failed, or maybe H&C decided: let's make this secluded part like our old planet, and have a bunch of humans. Oh, look, odium came and now he influenced them and they are now conquering all the world

I think that consensus is that Gavilar did something, that resulted in the dying speaking prophecies, so why not leading also to an increase in spren bonding activity?

Windrunner, that's what I thought too... They go about posing as the land's constables, they do the paperwork etc, I don't think that locals are supposed to know they are above-the-law multi-kingdom surgebinder hunters. I wonder if Darkness's followers are all from Nalan's order.
-
Btw, I am curious is voidbinding has emotional effects... they seem to be missing from surgebinding (but they were a big part in allomancy)

"Brandon has said that the magic system count depends on what you consider a magic system, with 30 as the high end." 30 is the high end, when you consider fabrials a "separate" magic system. If you don't, then you have 20.

Here it is. Let's discuss it here, and not hijack other threads. I shall start with other worlds from which we hare more information. I will not use BS's terms, but try to use laymen terms. Then I will write my theory. KNOWN WORLDS ------------------------ SCADRIAL/ALLOMANCY SCADRIAL/FERUCHEMY SCADRIAL/HEMALURGY (inquisitors) NALTHIS/BIOCHROMA SEL/AONDOR SEL/CHAYSHAN SEL/DAKHOR SEL/FORGERY OBSERVATIONS ---------------------- 1) usually native predisposition goes together with neutral category and no awakening 2) after MAGIC AWAKENING, the combination of INVESTITURE + WAY OF INVESTING + PERFORMING AN INVESTITURE results in a specific magical effect. Examples: ROSHAR BY ANALOGY ------------------------------- Magics: SURGEBINDING (positive) / FABRIALS (neutral?) / VOIDBINDING (negative?) SURGEBINDING +++++++++++++ power source: ? (roshar's spiritual energy) shard granting access to power: Honour + Cultivation (they came together, they were a couple, so maybe they set-up things to work the same) predisposition to magic: actions (person acts in certain ways) magic awakening: Bonding investiture (power): stormlight way of investing (key to investing): spren performing an investiture (magic): SURGES EXAMPLE 1: After BONDING (a one-time event possible because of the way you acted), STORMLIGHT + HONORSPREN like Syl + Gravity SURGE = you change gravity and now you can walk on the ceiling. EXAMPLE 2: replace spren with shardblade/dawnshard/whatever it is Szeth's sword. Dalinar has Bonded his sword (with capital B in original text). After BONDING, Stormlight + Szeth sword + Gravity SURGE = walk on ceiling. FABRIALS +++++++++ power source: ? (roshar's spiritual energy) shard granting access to power: none predisposition to magic: none (anyone can do it) magic awakening: none (but a fabrial requires a trapped spren) investiture (power): stormlight way of investing (key to investing): spren performing an investiture (magic): casting? Fabrials work the same way Just that instead of Bonding a spren, you trap it in a gem he is unfortunately attracted to. I'm curious if there is a link between the cut and type of a gem and an ideal. Maybe the gem is a physical representation of a cognitive ideal (that sprens are attracted to). VOIDBINDING - I don't think we have seen voidbinding yet. I think it's significantly different than surgebinding. You have surges, which are "elemental" powers, looks to me that we need "voids" to be performed in voidbinding. SHARDPLATES: is an invested object, it has stormlight. Looks to me it is missing the spren. Last thing to add, magic awakening seems to be multiple levels here, starting with Bonding and continuing with Words (Words are also capitalized by Syl, just like Bonding is by Dalinar). Edit (1) - added spoiler tags

What I find most striking in that picture is that in the center you have a big gem (instead of the double eye). Also, the magic systems I see them as: 10 = honor + cultivation 10 = fabrials 10 = odium
