Crackpot (probably) theory about Autonomy
Scion of the Mists replied to Fanghur Rahl's topic in Cosmere Discussion
We know that a Vessel has some latitude to interpret the Intent of the Shard that they hold. Bavadin's interpretation of "Autonomy" (which is really just a close approximation of the full Intent) is clearly different from yours. Bavadin has stated that "No good can come of two Shards settling in one location" (in her letter to Hoid in Oathbringer). It's safe to assume that she would be opposed to Harmony, literally two Shards merged together. She also may be opposed to Shards meddling with humans in general, and is attempting to subvert their control over their respective worlds (i.e. preserve their autonomy). Intents are not self-directed, so she has no need to restrict her own meddling. -
Odium’s Sho Del Hit-List
Scion of the Mists replied to i’m in the details's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think it's pretty clear that Ambition was number one on the list due to her Intent, not her race. -
The so-called "survival shard" doesn't have an Intent of Survival - it's just smart enough to avoid conflict.
-
Are you referring to this WoB? Because other than a reference to Dominion "going down swinging," I don't recall ever seeing that Dominion took down a part of Odium.

I think that Trell (red for corrupted Investiture) and Skeletals (red seal) are pretty clear. I can't find anything else besides T'Telir, so I would vote that as well, unless anyone else has any other ideas. -

@Ashspren, for future reference, clues are only supposed to be one word. -
Because Nale is a Herald, bound to the Oathpact. Everytime before, when a Herald died, they were sent to Braize to be tortured. It's an interesting question, because the Oathpact is still in force, Odium has just found a hack to get around the Fused-imprisoning portion of it.

You use the quote box to embed it, but hit the "Copy" button on top right of the WoB and it'll be nicely formatted and include the source as a footnote:

What do you think the missing Shards are?
Scion of the Mists replied to Inky's question in Cosmere Q&A
The intent of the Shard who just wants to hide/survive is unlikely to be Survival. -

1. It was not, but I don't think that Sak was special in anyway (besides being from the same planet) 2. I doubt it. Most of the time you need to have Connection to a particular place in order to be able to access the magic system (e.g. non-Scadrians can't be Allomancers), so I don't think it's likely for a non-native species to be able to gain an Aviar power (at least without some Connection hacking). 4. It also might not work with non-avian species. It doesn't work on humans, according to this WoB, but he did say that "there might be something more there," so it may be able to work on other species.

I think that the Heralds match the typical image of archangels the best. They are superpowered beings, selected by their god, who fight against the forces of darkness. They're even made immortal via divine intervention. However, they don't match the original question which was referring to a being whose power level was in the vicinity of that of a Shard. As I've said before, I think that this is definitely possible, but probably not likely as it would weaken the Shard. Although they don't have any innate powers, when they were powered directly by Honor via the Honorblades, they had access to raw levels of power that no Radiant could obtain.

game Cosmere Codenames
Scion of the Mists replied to Herowannabe's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
@Rhapsody Never mind then - I definitely thought he was a kid in the story. Given that, I would say that Karata would be the best next guess. -
Umm, what? Green definitely exists - it even has it's own Wikipedia page. One of the three types of cones is green. TVs/monitors use three different types of light to make images; one of those is green.

I think this one is pretty straightforward: Sebruki and Gneorndin Cett are the only two children on the board. -
[OB] Kaladin's Character Progression
Scion of the Mists replied to Starla's topic in Stormlight Archive
I see a lot of parallels between the reactions to Oathbringer and The Last Jedi. I think that they went against people's expectations and that's why people had such strong reactions to them. Just because the story doesn't go where you thought it was going to doesn't make it bad. -

An arc can be complete even if it ends in failure. It may not be very popular, as evidence by the majority of media having happy endings and also this thread. -
This has nothing to do with the Unmade, I just wanted to share this WoB that there are apparently foods that Lift doesn't like. Now I desperately need to know what they are.

The Lord Ruler briefly ascended himself - no Shard ascended him. Splinters aren't large enough to count. We have no indication that Autonomy's avatars are created out of people.

Is the concept of Investiture coherent/meaningful?
Scion of the Mists replied to Ripheus23's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There are these things called feedback loops, where two things affect each other. To use your analogy of the brain/mind: the brain cells may give rise to the mind, but each affects the other. A change in the make up of those cells can alter the mind; a decision made my the mind can affect the brain chemistry. I'm not sure you're going to get very far applying philosophical concepts from the real world to the Cosmere (which is fundamentally different in many ways). -
That Aviar does have a power, but we don't know what it is.

IIRC, Ham provided some valuable info/contacts from the soldiers.

Bondsmiths and Shards
Scion of the Mists replied to The Grumpy Elantrian's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm assuming that "human" really refers to sapient physical being (including dragons and Sho Del). There is a big difference between a splinter and a person: a splinter is just a hunk of Investiture. While it may gain sentience or sapience, it's not a physical being. Thus it can't hold a Shard, because it is itself a piece of a Shard. As Brandon explains in the WoB I linked before, splinters would just get absorbed into the larger whole. So if you kept infusing a splinter with Investiture, it would become a larger and larger splinter until eventually it would be big enough to be considered a "whole" Shard. A Sliver, by contrast is "someone who has had their mind, body, and spirit expanded due to holding a great deal of power, and then have had that power leave." It's a term that refers to people who have temporarily held a large enough chunk of a Shards power to be permanently altered by it. See also, this WoB: LOL- 40 replies

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible. We know that the Shards can (and do) intentionally splinter off some of their power to either create an independent being (spren, seons, etc.) or to augment humans (Returned, etc.). It's just a matter of how much power they're willing to give up. I don't see any reason why Bavadin couldn't give the extra Investiture she discovers to a person, rather than making it it's own thing (in fact I don't think we have confirmation that she doesn't do just that).

Is the concept of Investiture coherent/meaningful?
Scion of the Mists replied to Ripheus23's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't agree with this "definition." According to it, literally everything in the universe is the same substance, which is (depending on your definition of substance) either obviously false or so general as to be meaningless. The thing that all three realms share is Investiture. That doesn't mean that the realms are the same or that one must necessarily be fundamental to the others (whatever that even means). As far as we know, everything has a spiritual component. As @Calderis mentioned, Brandon has talked about Spiritual-only beings (which never made it into the cannon). It's definitely possible to have a non-physical being (see Cognitive Shadow). It's debated in-world whether or not all physical objects must have a cognitive component.
