    Aons and Intent

But are the intent to draw and the intent of the user different? Can an practiced Elantrian, who draws a perfect healing Aon and knows it is a perfect Aon used to heal, still utilize it if the Elantrian themselves does not wish the person healed? Does the intent of the user cancel out the intent of the Aon? Will the Aon not even appear and glow if the user is not drawing it faithful to the purpose?
  2. Question for Brandon: Is there a "place" where the all of the Cognitive Realm bottlenecks or converges? No matter where you were coming from or going to?

    Aons and Intent

Does Elantrian magic work even without intent? Or even with opposite intent? Would a healing Aon work if the Elantrian casting it actually wanted the person to die?
  4. If the dagger is a "cognitive shadow killer", then it would explain why the Fused did not want to wield it and kept their distance while Moash did the deed (are the fused cognitive shadows?)
  5. I'd forgotten about Szeth using it like that. But why then do the Heralds stuff em in the ground for the Shin to pick up instead of just dismissing them for all time? Jez says in the beginning of Way of Kings "Our blades must be left."
  6. What if the nature of the shard is something innately deceptive? Odium talks about passion, but somehow a lot of the people he influences end up with odd mental states: refusal to accept blame or responsibility, narcissism and feelings of entitlement. (Younger Dalinar, Amaram especially at end of OB, Queen Whatshername, all the people at the Revel). If he picked up the nature of Denial..........would he even know it? Or was that the very reason he liked it to begin with? "Hey I'm not the crafty bad guy. I'm just getting things done."
  7. I can't handle Odiumium since I'm saying it "Odi-yummy-yum." I always assumed the Honorblades were more....concrete, actual swords. They're not dismiss-able like shardblades (dead ideas?) and Radiant swords (living ideas?). I think the "black smoke" bit is much more interesting, as it sounds so much like Nightblood. But agree that there's probably one for each Herald, adorned with their personalized gemstone. Why though, mmm..... Edit: It doesn't strike me as hemalurgic though. I mean, just because you're being stabbed by something doesn't make it a spike.
  8. Yes! I love this series so far, although the time travel + amnesia aspects occasionally make my brain hurt. It can make for a tricky read. BUT OMG one of the best things about these books is that you as the reader are frantically putting together a giant insane puzzle while the characters themselves are clueless about the pieces.
  9. Foresight as an ability has always slightly bothered me as I want it to be more grounded in science, like many other abilities in the cosmere are. "It's not leviosa, it's multidirectional incremental gravity control!" So I did some pondering. Disclaimers: Some of these may overlap or be used in tandem. My understanding of Scadrial and metals in shaky. I had a hard time organizing this coherently. :c 1) Fortune and Probability Fortune, near as I can tell, is luck. How does it tell the future though? I think it's not about shaping the future as much as it about being lucky enough to be shown the most correct version of future. You've got a million possible futures laid out before you. You reach out blindly, nudge Fortune, and the probability of you actually being correct in your assessment goes way up. The orb Kaladin touches in OB may operate similarly if it had Fortune stored within it. Activate it with investiture, it releases Fortune in the form of a foresight vision. Despite Odium's saying Taravangian did not have access to Fortune, I believe King T nevertheless followed the same principles. On his craziest day making the Diagram, his intellect (rather than luck) had ballooned to the point where he was seeing probability on a level we can't understand. 2) Investiture and Shards Investiture permeates everything, all matter, in the cosmere to some degree. It makes sense to me then that the more investiture you have, the more connection you have to the cosmere in general. This explains abilities like Life Sense and Instinctive Awakening. The Shards themselves have been shown and discussed as having A LOT of foresight, which would make sense given their enormous amount of Investiture. I think this ability could trickle down to invested individuals who are either connected to the Shard. Examples: Returned on Nalthis receive foresight from Edgli right before they are given the choice of returning. Atium (a god metal) allows you to see seconds of future possibilities . Renarin gaining foresight via Odium via a corrupt spren. 3) Spirit Webs Idea: Since all investiture is connected, then spirit webs are connected. Shards, with their major investiture, can ripple out into multiple spirit webs when using foresight or since they kinda exist in the Spiritual Realm, they have auto access to it. This Major Web is what is tapped into by King T and possibly a chromium ferring tapping Fortune with intent of foresight. Several Scadrian metals such as atium, malatium, and electrum seem to be tapping into one's own or another's spirit web in past or present. In Sixth of Dusk, Sak provides visions of Dusk's potential deaths. Sak may be tapping into Dusk's (or whoever's shoulder) spirit web, possibly similar to the Nahel Bond. Crazy idea: Moelach temporarily bonds with the dying, ballooning their spirit web and creating foresight (also see foresight via Odium). 4) Crazy Talk Temporary folding the spacetime fabric? Thanks for reading my rambles.
  10. I just want to see Lift's interactions with pretty much everyone. Shallan: Both trying to figure out who they are. Big point in Edgedancer and obviously for Shallan's personalities. Also both have absent mothers, though for very different reasons. Each thinks the other is crazy, but also respects them. Navani: Surrogate mother for Lift? She's smart and crafty enough to manipulate Lift pretty deftly. Kaladin: .....Very different personalities clash (stormcloud vs rainbows), but maybe she reminds him of Tien? Jasnah: Can see them NOT getting along and Lift greatly trying Jasnah's patience. Renarin: Buddies. Adolin: He gets along well with everyone (except for Sadeas).
  11. These are hysterical! Sixth of Dusk Oathbringer (I mean, spoilers I guess?)
  12. Ooooooo! Good catch about the Wyrn. Stormwardens....I think I'm gonna leave that off the list. It is math related, but it's not the sort of thing I'm looking for. Fortune feruchemy is related to Chromium, yes? Storing up luck/altering probability?
  13. We haven't actually seen them use any type of foresight though, have we?
  14. Mine's one of many variations of a username I've been using for years. Originally from Zelgadis from the anime Slayers.
  15. Great topic! Interesting the things we carry for their personal meaning and remembrance (especially as a warning to ourselves). Mine are two dental crowns and an implant.
  16. I'm putting together a list of known uses of foresight in the cosmere for CRAZY THEORIES science. Help fill any gaps I've forgotten? Also by "foresight", I mean ANY glimpses into the future by any means magical, mathematical, or otherwise. Roshar Voidbinding/Renarin Taravangian's Diagram Death Rattles Scadrial (I get confused by these tbh) Atium Malatium Chromium Electrum First of the Sun Sak's Death Visions Nalthis Returned's original moment of death/vision Sel Wyrn limited foresight Taldain None? (I haven't read White Sand) Others Each Shard's overall foresight Hoid's knowing where to be.....thing Kaladin & the lighthouse sphere (Nalthian/Selish?)
  17. Your comment made me think of this hamster: and I literally snorted laughing thinking about Adolin as a fabulous unicorn.
  18. Jez seemed more like the traditional version of madness (skittish, babbling, bad hygiene). Nale's is......precarious. I think he is barely holding himself together on a pillar of lies. Knock knock, down it goes. Ishar not sure about. The letter makes him sound pretty far gone and delusional, however the respect the other Heralds give him is curious (though admittedly their judgements aren't sound either!). I wonder if the letter is fake crazy or maybe Nale and Ash haven't seen him in awhile (decades? centuries?) and they haven't realized how far his own insanity has progressed. Ash seems relatively okay, all things considered. She's coherent, social, and can hold down a basic job. Agree with @WhiteLeeopard it seems almost more a form of OCD. Taln is very curious. He's got some bare minimum coping mechanisms in place (verbal mantra on repeat, remind anyone else of the Hoed?) but I mean wow, when he "came to" for that short period he freaking blew me away.
  19. Puzzle Pirates did the same thing in game by replacing swears with pirate slang. Love it! (I'm testing it!) Storm this rust! Damnation! Ha! So there's one if you write it corrects to "[I use really dirty language and should be ashamed of myself] " Also "cremhole" sounds equally terrible as the real word. Also the best way to see without potential naughty posting is to hit the "Preview" button.
  20. I agree it could likely be related to the Spiritual Realm's blended timelessness. The investiture was always associated with a certain shard because it would be invested in that shard. There's a weird connection between the past, present, and future. Brandon's said it not "destiny", but there's a correlation.
  21. I like the idea of Adonalsium being natural investiture gaining self awareness and sentience over time. However, how would emotions and personality develop? Since Ado is eventually shattered into the Shards we know with their rather human characteristics, I would assume it had those traits beforehand. Would it have....mmm...."absorbed" these traits from the humans it had created? And if so, how did it create humans with these traits without understanding the traits to begin with? (Chicken/egg scenario)
  22. Hello and welcome to the madness! To eat cookies or to not eat cookies? Choose your fate.
  23. At the end of OB, Wit's wrapping up business in Alethkar when he says something that I found pretty disturbing. He'd enjoyed himself. Kholinar, at the time, was a city rioting against the queen, then under siege and slowly starving, plagued by corrupted spren and Unmade influences, and then eventually completely invaded. He thinks this while walking through the literally broken city finds him helping grieving mothers and orphaned children. I'm not saying Wit's enjoys people's pain. He shows too much care for broken folks for that. But I do worry/wonder if he has.....detached his emotions a bit.
  24. What's the symbol on the flag? Question brought to you buy this WoB: Well something's weird. If it's not the flag I'm assuming it's what appears to be an eclipse happening.
  25. I *think* in WoR a scout ran up to Eshonai at one point and said a group of listeners who refused the Transformation had run off. So hope, yes.
