the following is a continuation of my previous SU about how we know nothing as individuals and how we're all standing on a mountain of knowledge built by our predecessors
so i was thinking about that again right
about how much collective knowledge we have.
all the technologies and just...things that we have todayso i started thinking about what things people from the past would be shocked at if they knew we had
people commonly point out smartphones and electricity and stuff
which, yeah, they would definitely be shocked at thatmy mind went there first as well, which makes sense, i'm a very techy computery person
but i realized that, recognized my own biases, so I intentionally went in the opposite direction
sure, they'd be shocked at all the new things we have
but in a way
i think they'd be more shocked at all the things we don't. -
who made the bowling lane animations
what things have they seen

wait i have an idea
SCP-XXXX
CLASS: KETER
SECURE CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES:
There is currently no way to completely contain SCP-XXXX. Disengagement Groups Theta-19 and Bravo-15 are to be dedicated to spreading information confirming the 'non-anomalous' status of SCP-XXXX. Foundation Webcrawler 17645 (4k4rm) is to monitor for any signs of SCP-XXXX becoming public knowledge and for new SCP-XXXX instances.
DESCRIPTION:
SCP-XXXX:
SCP-XXXX is a form of microparasite capable of infecting television screens located within bowling alleys. There is no known way of detecting instances of SCP-XXXX before its anomalous properties manifest (SCP-XXXX-1). How SCP-XXXX feeds or reproduces is unknown, though it has been theorized that instances feed off the collection of confused amusement in the localized emotional metasphere (Dr. Nexad, Localized Metaspheres and their Manifestations, 1987).
SCP-XXXX-1:
SCP-XXXX-1 is the manifestation of the anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX. SCP-XXXX is a collection of poorly rendered 3d animations that appear on the device that an SCP-XXXX instance inhabits. These animations are generally nonsensical, but older manifestations seem to trend towards thematic relatability with the location in which the host of SCP-XXXX resides, usually a bowling alley. The animations are unpredictable, changing daily. The content of the animations is generally shocking or unexpected, examples shown in the table below.
and i'm bored now so i'm not gonna continue it
if you don't know what the SCP foundation is this isn't gonna make any sense lol -

Sometimes i like to think about how utterly useless we are as individuals
reminder: you are no better than prehistoric man. they were equally as intelligent, we just have years of compounded knowledge
like, look around you right now, choose any random object. now imagine you were instantly transported to a gazillion years ago. lets assume you can't die of starvation or illness and nothing is trying to kill you. do you think you could make an exact replica of that object before you die of old age? \
99.9999999% of cases, no you can't.
i wouldn't be able to make a pencil. think about all the design that's gone into something like that. the exact type of wood, the yellow paint coating, the composition of the rubber tip. all the machining and technique required to do even the simplest thing.
i can look around right now, and i don't think there is a single object that i would be able to replicate in this hypothetical scenrio
bottle cap: no
wooden baseboard: almost, but no idea how to make paint or nails
a nickel: noooo way
shoelace: wouldn't even know where to startand the thing is, i don't think anyone alive today would be able to either
sure, plenty of people would be able to thrive in scenarios like this, some survivalist people are insane
like you could definitely make substitutions for all of these. a crude pencil or shoelace wouldn't be that tough if you know what you're doing
but nobody would even come close to accurately replicating them.we are standing on the shoulders of millions of giants

Fair enough, I was mainly making a joke (though even then, it would still be possible to polish it, though one would likely have to test several materials nearby).
Incidentally, there is at least one YouTube channel dedicated to showing how various ancient tools were made and could be used - https://www.youtube.com/@primitivetechnology9550/videos. I do agree, bootstrapping would definitely be difficult, and I actually have an idea for a story involving an immortal trapped on a planet and having to go from nothing (as in, they start wounded and naked, but unable to die) to developing a rocket or other type of device to leave the planet.
