I won't post any spoilers if I can avoid it so first thing's first, have you read any of Brandons other works? ps. Try not to make double posts, just edit your previous post if you want to add anything

Yeah, I'd be interested to see if this ever gets explored much. I'm particularly interested to see what would happen if you tapped a large amount of wakefullness.
-
I'd say that the Voidbringers serve that purpose, not a single entity but they serve the same purpose.
-
Actually now that I think about it this would also explain why the Ghostbloods wanted to kill Jasnah, she was the only other person who knew that it was possible to soulcast without a fabrial.
-
Hey all, just going through the rules from the RPG again and came across something interesting. Apparently after tapping bronze there is no subsequent sleep debt, which is kind of the opposite of what I thought, but anyway this basically means that unlike atium you don't need to increase the amount of bronze that you are tapping the longer you stay awake. Just an interesting little tidbit I picked up that I haven't seen anywhere else.

Hey welcome to the forums! Let's get right to it. 1) I did think about this as well, my only conclusion is that either 1) they have some kind of treaty that they intend to honour. or (more likely) 2) They were waiting til their half-shards were fully developed to minimize casualties. We also don't know the rest of their military strength, which might be to small to take Alethkar safely. 2) I don't think that soulcasters are THAT rare, I would think that each army has its own batch to provide food. Farmers could probably make up for the rest, just because there are a lot of wars doesn't mean that recruiting has been that bad everywhere, presumably the monarchs all know not to take too many farmers unless they also have soulcasters to support. 3) If they stole shards from the High Princes I don't think they would have agreed to the treaty as easily 4) The food question has been raised In Universe, they assumed they soulcasters as well although they could have just a similar system of their own that is seperate. On numbers, I think pretty much every Parshendi participates in the war, we have even seen children in their armies. So this doesn't seem too unreasonable. EDIT: Sorry forgot about the end of point 4. 4) part 2- I would say they don't attack because the parshendi fight as individuals, if they had a large open field where they could field large amounts of troops then the Alethi have the advantage due to superior tactics.

Actually one of the Aes Sedai (Can't remember who) told Nynaeve that she had been taught that what Nynaeve was doing was impossible. Moiraine having been a full Aes Sedai would have believed the same. It is possible that all Aes Sedai have actually developed a block where they cannot channel while feeling emotional turmoil. More likely though Nynaeve is just one of the exceptions. I'll try and find the quote, I think it's probably somewhere in the great hunt. EDIT: I was way off, it was in LoC "By all I've been taught, you should not be able to channel at all. I was taught you must be calm to channel, cool and serene inside, open and utterly yielding." -Theodrin But yeah, basically Nynaeve is the exception. Also now that I think about it, the test for the Shawl kind of proves the point, the entire point of that test is that Aes Sedai cannot channel unless completely calm, if they could already channel when embarrassed, afraid or angry then it's not really a test is it?
-
It depends how you supress it, I would say that Aes Sedai simply don't let their emotions reach an 8 or 9. If it was about ignoring your emotions then they could cope, but that is Saidins affair, not Saidar. Saidar is about maintaining calm, not ignoring other emotions, so yeah if it was an Ashaman I think that Rioting would be pointless but being able to never feel fear above a 2 doesn't matter if it actually reaches a 9 then they would still be unable to embrace the Source.
-
I don't think it was ever mentioned that strength of will could counter soothing or rioting, but I might be wrong, they do have to be feeling the emotion to soothe or riot it but calm is an emotion as well, so soothing that would work just as well as rioting other emotions, it's all about how relative the emotions are, if you feel more angry than calm then I doubt you could hold onto the source. I did think about the tests for the shawl but once again that's external sources of emotion, which could be controlled by supressing those emotions, but if there is a force which directly manipulates emotions to a certain level you cannot supress them.
-
But if all of her calm is Soothed then it doesn't matter how determined she is, you cannot embrace the source without calm. (Unless you are Nynaeve) Basically experienced as she is at controlling emotions that are externally influenced, Kelsier directly manipulates emotions, no matter how good you are at avoiding being angry that doesn't make any difference once you actually are angry. If we try and ascribe objective values to the level of emotion a person is feeling then it would look something like this. Moiraine has iron hard self control and so even when confronted by a horde of Trollocs can keep her level of fear down at aroun 1 or 2 (out of say 10) However Kelsier directly manipulates emotions, rioting her fear to an 8 or 9. There must be some minimum threshold of emotions (presumably lower than 5) above which someone cannot embrace the source all Kel has to do is Riot her emotions above this threshold making her unable to use the source. Of course if Lan is with her then my vote goes towards Moiraine in a second. Even atium can't beat Lan

Ah! Thankyou, well this makes a lot more sense! So the only instance of chanting we have is the growing of the bone structure then, and that could probably be something just to make coordination among the monks generating the symbols.
-
Yeah, and don't forget soothing! If he soothed all feelings of calm and serenity while rioting distraction then Moiraine is not going to be calm or serene and will be distracted so yeah there is easily potential for Kel to win this fight.
-
Hmmm, it's been a while since I've read it but I thought there was some chanting with the transportation. If not then that makes a lot more sense.
-
Yeah, I'd be really interested in a main character who was a Rioter or Soother, probably combined with some Feruchemical ability, not sure which. But yeah I think there are a lot of options for emotional allomancy that haven't been explored.
-
Yeah, also I just had the obvious thought of any well connected crimial organization would give it a go. It has been stated that you don't need to be killed but I doubt anyone would volunteer to have a piece of their soul ripped out, even if it was non-lethal. Maybe for people on their deathbed but I think it would be too socially unaccepted. I'm actually more interested to see if we get any more of the warping effects in future books, new races created and that sort of thing.
-
I'm still not convinced that she could stand up to a strong Riot, she could ignore her emotions but it would still prevent her from touching the source.
-
I really like this! I think this may be my first Espoused theory! (Ironically even before my own theories )
-
Yeah, I've seen that and it is kind of worrying, how then can we explain the chanting from the Dhakor? Because obiously they weren't born with mutated bones
-
Yeah, although I suppose I should say Nicrosil fueled now because we're unlikely to see Duralumin again unless we get some Mistborn back. But yeah, I mean the books seem to imply that the range of emotions is hugely vast, it's not just simple things. But I can see a few teams consisting of Rioters and Nicrobursts massively rioting the suspicion or something in an entire enemy army to cause some in-fighting or rioting their hunger periodically to cause them to go through supplies a lot faster. It could really be incredibly useful.
-
Yeah, I'm really interested to see where that goes. So yeah, I don't think hemalurgy will ever be publicly accepted but I'm thinking that for all those secret agencies they'd have to have misting/ferring operatives, so yeah I think they'd try and get a mistborn or full feruchemist, Or maybe just basically re make inquisitors so they have a mixture of both abilities.
-
Sorry, when I said at one time I meant before she becomes exhausted, as the one power draws strength from the user a lot more than allomancy (except pewter-dragging but unless this fight goes on for 3 or so days we should be right )
-
Yeah, I mean hopefully this will all make a lot more sense when the next Elantris book comes out because basically we know nothing about ChayShan and only a little about the Dhakor. I was just interested in the idea that it might be about the 3 methods of communication (written, verbal and body language) But yeah it could be form based, I think that it basically depends how ChayShan works so we shall have to see! XD
-
I think it'd be tough to manage without a ramp, it could be done but both would need to pull at the exact same time with the exact same strength, but if they ever managed to co-ordinate this it would be awesome!
-
I'm sure that if hemalurgy is ever re-discovered (and it will be) then governments would probably each have a mistborn or keeper or Terrisborn as basically a super-soldier but pretty much no one would know about it. (Loved the skyrim reference BTW)

They have as much efectiveness as any weapon when no one is using it, kill the person holding it and they can't keep using it, simple. I'm not saying that flamethrowers are useless but in this particular situation they wouldn't last long. Especially against someone like Wayne who engages in melee combat anyway, can't shoot someone with a flamethrower if they are right in front of you as easily, so yeah it's probably more effective than guns but the only way to be able to make full use of that is to just have everyone carrying them around which is just impractical. I do like that idea for lurchers, allomancy fueled cannon
