Actually I think someone just posted up a transcript where Brandon said that anyone can take up a shard, it didn't have to be a user of the magic system. Definitely agree with Hoid being hunted for interfering too much

Woo! New magic system! Seems like a cross between Aons, Soulcasting and Awakening. I like this one, seems like it could have some interesting applications.

How to defend against shard plate, shard blades, wind runners, ect.
Voidus replied to RJWB0mb's topic in Stormlight Archive
I hadn't even thought about a ballista. I suppose pretty much any siege weapon would work quite well, trebuchet, heck even an improvised battering ram. Of course the problem with all of these is that a shardbearer also usually has an army to protect them so yea, I suppose a trebuchet might also be a tad inaccurate. -
Well considering that atium basically doesn't exist that seems a bit unlikely But yea the Aluminum economy sounds good, bit annoying for the coinshots but seems like a good idea.

Thermite is notoriously difficult to light and also anything against a bendalloy bubble is difficult as they can see it coming for minutes before it actually hits.

I'm still trying to think how compounding could work in reverse to increase allomancy... On TLR and aging, yea I think the problem as Thor said is basically that it would eventually get to a point where 1. TLR needs to eat atium faster than it is produced. 2. He needs to eat it at a rate faster than he can actually eat it (also it would absolutely be shredding his insides so he'd need to alternate some gold in there too) Also due to the amount of age he'd be storing (I'm pretty sure that's how compounding was said to work, burning it for a flash of power then storing that flash to tap it at lower levels) eventually the size of the metalminds he'd need would be ridiculous and kind of obvious if he drags a room sized chunk of atium everywhere he goes. On the compounding allomancy do we know if this could happen to a twinborn? As opposed to a full mistborn/feruchemist. On the nicrosil compounding, the RPG says it's just about feruchemy. Turning any feruchemical charge into a kind of general charge which can then be used to power another metalmind (eg. turning stored age into strength) I can't remember anything about allomancy

That's exactly how I see it too. You couldn't suddenly gain the soulcasting ability by just spouting a whole lot of true things to form the nahel-bond. I think it's more about having a drive to be truthful, or act with honour.
-
The problem is that the fire rate inside the bubble is actually about 20x faster outside, once they hit the border, the ones behind would be hitting almost at the same time. Gas grenades are a great idea, not sure where you're going with the thermite...
-
We've already seen that even normal soldiers wearing plate are quite a bit more mobile than those without, I don't think it would slow him down too much.
-
I think that the range is the problem for using a shotgun, unless someone is standing literally 1m from the bubble then you are going to have trouble hitting them, On the machine guns I get the feeling that you would be firing so many bullets per second relative to the rest of the world that half of them would probably colide and give even weirder trajectories. Still an excellent idea, also does anyone know much about how the deflection works yet? I'd think that mass would have to make a difference as would speed.
-
Yea, would be interested to see if the potential to be a KR was genetic (I see it as being like allomancers, the TYPE of misting isn't genetic but the ability to become one is.) Also more interviews? YAY

Sorry, I should have clarified. I meant are we sure her father couldn't just soulcast without one?
-
Shrapnel still travels a fair way, not necessarily lethal but as long as they are reasnably close you'll still do some damage, particularly as I said if you are surrounded, Yea I'm still trying to think about how to avoid the blast yourself. Anyway I still think flash grenades at least would be good.
-
Have we ruled out the possibility that it was a fake soulcaster?

I've been following the Kylar Stern write ups I wasn't sure what to do when he went up against Harry, although truth be told I do find Harry to be quite a bit more annoying Anyway the write ups have all been great so far, (although the last Kelsier fight got to me a bit, especially the part where he just stops in the middle of the fight to try and steal something I understand that it might be difficult to write his character without reading the books but come on, no one would do that) I don't know who to root for, too many of my favourites! Kelsier, Moiraine, Thomas, Darth Reavan, Harry and Kylar. ARGH!

Could work, although I think that the shards would have to have a hand in creating the humans on the world for there to be a magic system related to them.
-
Yea I was thinking of something like that for lurchers too, like the chakrams from Kingdoms of Amalur. I was thinking that for sliders flash grenades would be good, because the random direction change doesn't matter that much, also something else to stun people who are in the bubble with them to give them the edge in melee combat. Actually now that I think about it grenades in general would be great for sliders, the deflection wouldn't matter much due to the area the explosion would cover.

Yeah blinding would work pretty well, although if you took the time to get a handful of sand when you're facing a shardbearer you'd probably be dead. -

Well considering you need shardplate to be able to draw it I think you might as well just go in with your blade/massive-hammer-of-doom -
I kind of assumed she got the blade from her father when he died (can't remember the exact quote something about the fruit of her sins?) On the spiritual bodily cavity (lol) I thought I read somewhere that shardblades reside in shadesmar when they aren't summoned. May have just been someones theory as I can't find a quote on the interview database :S

Yeah I suppose that would be a good solution, still I think if it affected allomancy too much it could just turn into a magical fix for situations. Personally I loved how it was used in AoL but one of the things that I really love in all of Brandons novels is how creative the solutions get, I think in the next series we might even see some counter-counter measures ways to get around aluminum as I think this is probably how it would naturally evolve a kind of allomantic arms race
-
I'm trying to think of anyone else but I just keep coming up with the bridge crews and their deaths are definitely no mysterious. I think I'll have to go with Shallans brother for now, unless it's her father? I know that Shallan killed him but why? also I think she may have been speaking in terms of she caused her fathers death but didn't necessarily wield the knife so to speak.
-
Yea I've seen a few of those models, the military has some really amazing stuff at the moment.
-
Yea I think Aluminum would be incredibly overpowered in the next series if it basically blocked all allomancy, in our era of technology it would be readily available in great quantities so that would basically make allomancers useless in combat.

Long corridor won't do much, double lashing to the end and they're there in seconds, which basically renders the archers useless. Spearmen are a good idea thought, I think spears would be much more useful than swords, given how much momentum szeth generally builds up in fights. Would work better against a soulcaster probably, although if they can all do that ranged soulcasting trick that Jasnah showed then they'd all still be dead, although I think that would have to have some kind of increased stormlight cost.
