Darn sorry, got mixed up with another topic where someone was just talking about Duralumin burning metals in my defence I haven't slept for around 30 hours. So yes, ignore everything I just said, I do know how compounding works and in the event of compounding you could just instantly store the attribute back again so no dangers at all associated with that. EDIT: Cookies for everyone to apologise for my misunderstanding!

Depends what metal, I think tin/pewter would almost certainly kill you since even regular Savantism is dangerous the others, not sure but I think Iron/Steel are the only ones you would definitely be safe with, since we've seen those Duralumin burned with no ill effects and I can't see how you would be killed by them unless you accidentally instinctively pushed at some fast moving piece of metal without bracing yourself. Copper would probably be safe too. Rioting and Soothing would be more dangerous to those around you, I think Copper would be the best bet, either that or Nicrosil burning Duralumin since that would do absolutely nothing. This does raise an interesting question though, is there a Super-Savant level? if you Duralumin burned copper for long enough you might become a super-Savant in it and have a coppercloud extending for miles, sorry got off topic a bit at the end there

Sorry to bring this debate back up again but I would like to point out that the power for Allomancy doesn't necessarily come from Preservation, some of us think that there is a universal Power of Creation that powers all the magic systems (Also presumably what refills the power at the Well) My main problem is that we know from a quote from Brandon (and from HoA) that Preservation can power Allomancy directly but doing so requires expending power in a way that he was unlikely to do, so if Preservation is always powering Allomancy why would it be different if the Allomancer didn't burn metals? Also just to note, I don't believe that Compounding increases the speed at which you can burn metals so it wouldn't use any more of the power anyway, you'd have to be continually Nicrosil or Duralumin burning, which I believe would probably just kill you

Have we discussed Nightblood's shard-like qualities, yet?
Voidus replied to Pechvarry's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Seons were conscious and they were Splinters (probably) Spren are less conscious but they can become fully aware and they are Splinters, I don't think that Nightblood is unlike Splinters that we have seen. -
Yeah, someone's asked that question about tattoos before and got a RAFO on it so my guess is that that's what'll end up happening (Saves disfiguring all the other kingdoms )

What are you playing right now?
Voidus replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in Entertainment Discussion
My latest is a dual-swords wielding Redguard, I've also got a Dark Elf mage, an Argonian Rogue (Dual daggers) and a Wood elf rogue (Illusion and Archery) all the rest are weird class wise because they became stealth characters half-way through -
Yes but only in the beginning because humans possess both the desire to ruin and to preserve, after a time with a Shard it completely enforces it's Intent on you (This is why Leras had to come up with such a long and complex plan to destroy Ruin, he was so influenced by the Shard that he was no longer capable of ruining at all.) that said, Sazed is the owner of both Shards so he would still be able to exert some of his own will into it.

Well when Vin drew in enough of Preservation she became Preservation but that was because no one else held the Shard. I suspect that you would gain the same intent as the Shard, I think somewhere in the annotations it mentions that the more Preservation a person had the more they Preserved (Although they may have still been bad people) I'll try to find the quote. EDIT: That was quick, found it! It's more implied than stated but this does support your point that even a piece of a Shard can influence someone with it's Intent. -

Voidus replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Well I didn't get too far with some of them but yeah 7 Characters, my problem is I keep trying to play as a certain class but then forget and revert back to my rogue play-style Yay for PC mods! -

Voidus replied to Pechvarry's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Just a quick aside, if a person gained that much power I think they would be termed a Sliver, not a Splinter, Duralumin burning metals for an extended period would be incredibly dangerous since we already know how much ordinary Savants risk, as well as the fact that it would be almost impossible to ingest enough metal to continually burn it at Duralumin levels, I think you would simply die. Same goes for Stormlight, there is an upper limit to how much you could hold. -
As long as it was made by an Elantrian then yes I presume because they were content to stay in Elantris, they held themselves quite aloft from society after all.

Re-playing Skyrim for around the 7th time -
Since this is in the Mistborn forum I'd refrain from discussing anything too spoilery about Elantris, it's an interesting thought though, maybe make a new topic in Elantris or General Discussion?

Between the Siege of Fadrex and the Final Ascension that should cover it, I'll just split the section into two categories with those titles.

But Shallans Truthspren seem sentient more or less from the start (already capable of speech). On another note I don't think it likely that Elhokar will become a Soulcaster, he already has a legion of them to do Soulcasting for him, it just wouldn't add much to his abilities. Actually I think there is a problem with Elhokar obtaining pretty much any KR abilities (even though I really hope he does) he already faces a lot of opposition to his rule, if the Highprinces discovered he was messing with forbidden KR abilities he would likely be deposed before he could say the second ideal Although then again the solution to both of those problems is that if he did get deposed he probably wouldn't have any Soulcasters

But er preservationousness is not an absolute state, their are gradients, if Preservations intent were less than fully commited to preservation then it would have been possible to Ruin for the sake of Preserving. (You don't need a Shard to feel Ruinous )
-
There's no reason that the power of a Shard should influence the strength of it's intent, even when divested of most of his power Ruin was still Ruinous and Preservation was still... er preservationous? There may be a difference in the power of the Shards but that does not mean that the power will not regenerate (as with the Well) or that this should affect the Shards intent.

I was just wondering if we have any kind of canonical/fanonical name for the events of book 3, the Koloss war? The Battle for Scadrial and the fight with Ruin are all I could think of but I think it would be useful for the wiki, I tend to reference the Skaa rebellion and the siege of luthadel a lot. EDIT: I just remembered the Siege of Fadrex but I still think that something for the fight against Ruin would be useful

I honestly can't believe it took me that long to think of that one I agree that Zinc would be useful even against precognitive foresight since you could take ages to decide where they are blocking, how to react, etc. EDIT: The problem is that in a fight situation everything happens too fast for most people fighting a seer to think 'Oh well he's about to block here so that's obviously where I'm going to attack instead I'll attack here' I'd say that only Feruchemical Zinc, maybe steel and allomantic pewter users could do this with any reliability others might be able to pull it off but it would be hugely risky.

I disagree with this bit, the reason you can only see a few seconds into the future is that like all allomantic metals there is a fixed rate at which Atium can be burned, not necessarily because you lack the mental capacity and cannot process this. Agree with all the rest, sounds good to me
-
Not a problem, I'm trying to familiarise myself with the interview database again since I've been away for a while so it's good practice Maybe the excess energy goes to refilling the well? Or just directly to the Shards but even then the amount of metal that Allomancers would burn over 1024 years would be a lot of energy, maybe to the 'power of creation' depending on where you stand on that subject EDIT:I'm 99% sure it isn't this but I also just came across But I'm pretty sure we worked out it was from bendalloy/Cadmium didn't we?

But she wasn't trying to see what Zane was going to do in the future, she was trying to see what SHE was going to do in the future, and since she had an atium shadow to Zane she obviously wasn't going to die from a brain anuerism. I think that if Atium relied upon mind reading (Which also seems incredibly unlikely to me because Ruin specifically CANNOT read minds, and if the whole Shard can't somehow I doubt that a piece of his body could) then the mistborn would know it and so this technique would be quite well known, besides Vin specifically says afterwards that she did it because Zane let her see the future. I also find it difficult to believe that no one else ever changed their mind while mistborn were fighting them with Atium. As Eric said we also have objects whose future is predicted (Arrows come to mind) so it would either have to be actual precognition for objects and mind reading for people or just straight precognition for all, Occam would suggest we avoid needlessly adding exceptions.

B4DAVE () My question is, why are they called Shardblades/Shardplate? Is it because they are a splinter of the the Shard Honor, or is there something more to them than that? BRANDON SANDERSON You are on the right track.

"There is nothing metaphysical about her seeing his muscle twitch and predicting his action. Thus humans can defy Atium." But because there IS something metaphysical which is causing his muscle to react it's like she just gained a brief imperfect amount of Atium, if Zane didn't have Atium then you would be right it would just be a reaction to what she sees and can extrapolate not true precognition but because Zane could see the future his actions (Which are caused by him knowing the future) show Vin a piece of what the future is definitely going to be (as opposed to guessing what the future would be like in your case of the headlights) so Vin still needs to react to the Atium to do this. Another way to look at it is to take a longer term view, suppose that there was the ability for true precognition into the future (clear visions of say the events of the next week) by telling people what you saw in this vision you could give other people the knowledge of the future even though they did not personally witness it and this would give them the ability to change it too.

We'd also need a realistic enough simulation of the world (either that or a way to snapshot someones memory) and a heck of a lot of programmers, still I would guess that once technology becomes sufficiently advanced psychologists (and philosophers I suppose) will begin using computer simulations like this as it allows methods of testing unavailable with humans, but then I suppose the moral questions will arise of if the AI is sufficiently intelligent and self aware that it can perfectly simulate a human can we morally use it for testing purposes? But that's all a bit off topic again. The best way I can phrase my views is that everyone on Scadrial would have the potential for free will, but only through usage of precognitive abilities would they be able to utilize it.
