  1. A day in the life of Metronome: (Archived for easy viewability, more may follow) A day in the life of the Amputee: A day in the life of: Atrophy A day in the life of: The Jedi
  2. Well the Half-Shards that can stop Shardblades are said to be basically normal shields with a Durability-enhancing Fabrial attached, assuming Shardplate works on similar principals it may enhance the durability of the wearer as well as the Plate itself.
  3. You all think far too small. A moderator? An admin? A lurker? Nay, I say unto you Sharders that Brandon Sanderson is the 17th Shard itself! *Cue dramatic music* Using his numerous contacts in the field of science which he has previously used to fact check certain elements of his writing Brandon has derived a machine which allowed him to upload his consciousness onto the internet in the form of a forum, thereby monitoring in real time the entire communitys response to his writing allowing him to be the insanely efficient and polished writer that we know and love. This is also how he manages to write so quickly, things like typing speed have no bearing when he can just will the words onto his computer. Unfortunately this also means that Brandons brain has some weird opinions on black magic and love problems. Anyway. ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED!
  4. I just kind of felt like writing it as an exercise but I may do more 'A day in the life of...'s in the future.
  5. Yay! Someone used my answer from Brandons Q&A here! This is essentially what I was thinking of when I asked that question, I think that in determining that a memory can be split like that that Feruchemical copper does also have a certain 'strength' associated with each memory and so that may be possible to compound, essentially creating a memory that is really difficult to forget, which is I think where the rumours of TLR having perfect recall come from.
  6. Welcome to the forums, we have some er... enthusiastic bronies and pegasisters staggered around the site as you've seen no doubt and no shortage of pony-themed avatars Care for a welcome-to-the-forums-cookie? Ignore the naysayers, they're just jealous of our delicious baking. SACRILEGE!
  7. Welcome to the forums! I see Kippers been around with the cookie tray already but if you ever feel peckish feel free to drop by the Dark Alley in the social guilds section, we've always got something baking, whether it's cookies, donuts or the ever-tormented souls of our enemies brownies.
  8. Welcome to the forums! Looks like you've gotten through most of Brandons works already but what's been your favourite so far? (Mine is an equal tie between everything I love them all for different reasons) Would you care for a welcome-to-the-forums-cookie? (Mint flavoured today)
  9. I've debated for a while whether or not to respond here as this touches on a couple of sore points for me, namely the 'science is a religion/your god' point but hey, things have been kept civil so far so why not? Spoilered for potential to get into slightly more in-depth discussion, for those not interested in potentially touchy topics go no further. Or do if you feel like it, but you've been forewarned
  10. But wait, he does have the bat voice, that's a super power right? The ability to have perpetual laryngitis?
  11. I don't know if we want to open up the batman vs. Iron Man can of worms here... But clearly Iron Man wins.
  12. Batman has the power of being rich, does that count?
  13. Useful for shattering someone else's Plate at the least but yeah largely I agree. I wouldn't mind seeing a ShardBola though.
  14. Well they can change shape certainly but a bow needs a drawstring which is of a different material, potentially they could do something similar by just changing shape which means they might not even need to be drawn at all but then it's still not necessarily better than any normal bow, let alone a Shadbow like Sadeas used. A ShardArrow might be an improvement but they'd need to be pretty broad to manage to sever any limbs or anything, I think they'd mostly be useful in attacking other Shardbearers from range.
  15. On the Hypno matter I think the clincher would be do commands work if they're recorded and played through headphones or something similar? Because I'd see Insights ability to perceive the real world as only really being a copy of the information, to actually see the real world even in black and white the light needs to be absorbed by his pupils, which means his pupils at the very least would be visible in the real world. So the logical conclusion is that its a replica of the light from the real world, and also a replica of sound which may or may not help but I'm just trying to logic my way through the powers involved.
  16. Thought I'd mention here that Peter's confirmed that Calmity is getting a February 16th release
  17. Woo! Thanks Weiry and Peter!
  18. So is it just the Mad Balooner post left to finish up for Portland for the night?
  19. The Dark Alley prides itself on the unique blend of steel and a powdered material that looks almost identical to the crushed skulls of our enemies, this original alloy produces a high quality hammer unlike anything you've ever experienced. Broken your last mallet trying to hammer a steel spike through something that is say approximately the same thickness and density of a human sternum? Worry no more, use the Dark Alley hammer and that thick piece of unspecified material will yield like butter! *The Dark Alley holds no responsibility for the use or misuse of its hammers, any resultant physical, spiritual or mental damage caused by the Dark Alley hammer is the sole responsibility of the wielder, hammer may cause undesired fracturing of the soul, inexplicable wails of the damned or spontaneous taco generation, we have no idea why but hey, free tacos.
  20. Having not even finished writing a book yet I feel inadequate to dispense advice as a writer but I am happy to give my advice as an avid reader of High and Epic Fantasy. In terms of examples I'd point you towards Malazan, particularly Gardens of the Moon, way too many characters in way too many settings introduced way too quickly, don't get me wrong I love Malazan but the first book is an absolute trial to get through for many readers. Wheel of Time is a series that started off well but tended to bloat with viewpoints towards the middle, something of a common problem in Epics. In terms of a positive example I'd say the first books of the WoT are good but my standout favourite is Stormlight, particularly the Way of Kings, there were not a great many viewpoints but the balance between them was fantastic, definitely recommend picking through it to see how Brandon balanced character screentime and story arcs, in particular how it didn't really feel like it was just Kaladins book even though he got all the flashback sequences. I'd also recommend comparing it to how Brandon dealt with cycling character viewpoints in Elantris to see how he developed and what the differences were.
  21. The Adventurer toyed idly with a piece of string as he thought over his interaction, was there some kind of requisite side-quest before a romance option appeared? Should he have brought that woman more flowers or something? Well she'd reached out to take the flower so gift giving was obviously ok, but then she'd tried to run. Maybe something more practical next time? Like one of the guns that Lockvault had in his inventory? Resolving to ask his partner when he was done in the shooting range the Adventurer began watching the security feeds again, watching the NPCs scurry about their tasks, some occasionally pausing to chat as their morning routines kicked in. Watching one small family begin cleaning their house in the aftermath of last nights breakin the Adventurer marvelled at the complexity of the AI, usually games just reset all the items whenever you weren't looking, he supposed because of the security systems that it made sense to leave the NPC AI on even if there weren't any players around. Casting a quick look around the base and noting how it had already become somewhat messy after just a single night he considered checking to see if he shifted the NPCs to a new environment if they would start cleaning here too... "It seems like we have been here long enough, how about we go look for some quests, or something?" Lockvault piped up, exiting the firing range. "Not a bad idea, I don't even know what kind of factions there are here, I usually try to keep neutral at first to get through the main quest first but it's always good to know about all the guilds or whatever they have." Forgetting about the cleaning family, the Adventurer started rifling through the room, picking out the odd item and putting them in his pockets with a muttered "Never know when you'll need it." Thus armed with not only his rifle but several scraps of paper, a piece of chalk and a broken pen he shifted himself and Lockvault back into the city. "Any ideas in particular?" He asked his companion as they appeared in a busy street, people giving them a wide berth and avoiding their eyes for some reason.
  22. "I'm not profile stalking him! My browser just got stuck when I was trying to find the ignore button is all."
  23. Well I'd point out that you can either say comparisons can be perfect and try to substitute one for mine or acknowledge that there'll never be a perfect analogy. But essentially your comparison shows exactly how many atheists feel when being preached to. To start with many atheists have read the bible and studied it's history more than a great many christians have, partially out of necessity partially out of genuine interest. So to have someone try to preach to you about the subject when you've already studied it in great depth is both condescending and insulting in many cases. Secondly is the assumption that that person is incapable of discovering the truth for themselves, it's either a self evident truth as in the case that removing your spinal cord is a bad thing in which case the assumption is that the atheist must be in some way mentally flawed to be incapable of perceiving it as such or else you are not assuming that the atheist is any smarter or dumber than the average person and so you must accept that there is at least a possibility that you are wrong. (Which very few people who preach gospel will do) I'll quickly follow with an atheists views on biblical foreknowledge, this is just my personal views and not a representation by any means, some atheists accept biblical foreknowledge, some don't, some believe the entire bible is a hoax, this is just my views on the subject.
