It could be something simple, like maybe Syl stated that line as fact but was just mistaken due to her "youth" and inexperience. I do like the idea that storm light has something to do with it. Plus we don't have any evidence that Wyndle, Stormfather, and maybe Ivory suffered any memory loss at the time of bonding, so there is possible precedent for this.

I think the line Hoid gave us about watching the world burn to get what he wants will be the biggest foreshadow we get. I suspect this is what BS was referencing when he said we know how it ends. I don't really have any proof to support this belief. . .it's just a feeling I have.

I get it. I had the same issue picturing Aviendha as a fair skinned redhead in WoT

I feel like this either implies the fourth ideal deals with not wanting to help someone, or wanting to not help someone (the difference is subtle, I know, but it is different.) I personally like the idea that it was foreshadowed in the Kaladin flashbacks in the first book with his father, multiple times, as stated by other posters above. I suspect it will be along the lines of, "I vow to let go of those I cannot save, to protect those I can." Then he will light up like a Christmas tree and kick the crem out of everyone.

Buy. The Purelake is actually a large island in Shadesmar where the spren capital is located.

Not to mention the difficulties he would come across should a Windrunner spren choose to bond with him. I imagine he would have to give up the blade due to a screaming spren corpse, and IIRC the plate interferes with lashing.

I don't really see Kaladin bonding another spren. This is entirely speculation on my part, but I feel that his arc, at least for the front half, will be mainly about him coming to terms with his depression and survivors guilt over the deaths of so many friends and allies as he grows to accept his responsibilities as a leader (as opposed to THE leader) within the ranks of the reformed KR. I'm on mobile so I don't have links, but I feel like it was implied that the idea for Dalinar was the root of what evolved into the story for the SA. Now that we have a deeper dig into his past in OB, I believe that at the core of the front half at least, this is the story of his gradual ascension from ruthless monster to godhood. As far as what that means for the Bondsmiths, we will have to wait and see. I do think that if that job fell to Kaladin, it would keep him at the front of the narrative, and we know that our front half main protagonists are going to have lesser roles in the back half. I guess my point is that I believe that if we started swapping spren around with either of them, it would throw thier character progression out of the window and would likely feel very unsatisfying to read. Again, this is just me speculating.

I'm still amazed I never noticed how the part titles in SA books form Keteks until my second OB read

[OB] when did you realize who was vivenna?
Solant replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
Totally the metaphors. To be fair, we were expecting her to show up, so part of me was already on the look out for her as I was reading. -
(OB) The Complete Stormlight Archive Cover Art
Solant replied to Ammanas's topic in Stormlight Archive
Pssh, cover art. It's 2090. I'm purchasing it and downloading it straight to my brain. For my one hundred and elevendyth birthday. -
Not really a spoiler, but random mistborn musing

I think by the end of book 5 going into the gap we will see Jasnah removed from the throne due to any number of reasons (death, political unrest from the Vorin church, conflict with her responsibilities as Radiant and /or scholar, etc), and after some amount of character growth (fatherhood, perhaps?), Adolin will sit the throne either as king or regent for Gavinor.

I agree. It was fun to experience part 1 at the same pace as everyone else. The discussion both here and at tor.com was something I looked forward to every week, and I felt myself missing it when it was over. There's something to be said for being forced to slow down and savor every chapter like that. It's something I had never really experienced before. (I tend to binge read/watch when I am really engaged with storytelling of any kind)

Questioner Did Kaladin’s name come from anywhere in particular? Brandon Sanderson No. I'm sure the word paladin was in the back of my head, but it's not like he shares much with like an actual paladin. His name was Merin in the initial version and it was-- it didn't work, he wasn't a Merin and all the fans-- all the readers were like "this name just doesn't work" so I spent years hunting for the right name for him, and that's the one I ended up with. It's really based-- it's Kalak, which is the Storm-- not really the Stormfather but people y'know. Most of the names you'll find are based off one of the Heralds in some way. So he's KALA + DIN, Kalak and din is a suffix. Isaac Stewart We do have a meaning for it though. Can I tell them the meaning? Brandon Sanderson Ehhh, have we canonized it? Isaac Stewart We have canonized it, and we have told people before. Brandon Sanderson Then yeah. Isaac Stewart It means "Born unto Eternity". Brandon Sanderson ...I mean, it means that in the same way that names mean something, like my name means-- But when they're naming him that they aren't thinking that. What they are doing is picking one of the Heralds and making a name out of it. But my name technically means "Dweller by the Beacon", but really what it means is "He was the son of Alexander". source

It occurred to me awhile ago that Brandon might have stated Eshonai as the flashback character for this book prior to OB just to keep from revealing the plot twist with her. Just thinking out loud here, but it's entirely possible that Venli was the intended flashback character for book 4 since the beginning, but saying so before OB was released would have taken away from the emotional impact.

I wrote a big post about Nightblood, but I realized that by the end I was talking myself in circles. I'll just say that it's in the grey area between Chaotic Neutral and Chaotic Good, since its intent doesn't always line up with its actions. Interesting thread, btw.

Buy, because scholars. The last thing Dalinar heard in a vision in OB was, "This has been Writing Excuses! You're out of excuses, now go write!"

Sell. The King's Drop is a Dawnshard.

Buy. What a deal! Hoid is actually Brandons self-insertion in the Cosmere.

[OB] Describe a Character in One Word

Stick: omnipotent -
I like this theory. If anything, I think it provides a more plausible explanation as to how you could convince every Radiant to simultaneously and deliberately abandon their scared oaths and life missions and destroy the objects of one of their most intimate relationships. Actually, the more I think about it in those terms, I don't know how this would not be the case. I feel like otherwise, a certain percentage of Radiants would morally be unable to comply.

Just a Star Wars joke. I guess I should have emphasized the Yoda voice I heard in my head when I typed it

[OB] Ashyn isn't the Tranquiline Halls. Roshar is.
Solant replied to Overlord Jebus's topic in Stormlight Archive
Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] A friend of mine wanted me to ask: Was the cataclysm that rocked Ashyn and forced its inhabitants into the flying cities Investiture-based, and if it was was it Shardic in nature? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] The same cataclysm that the-- did you finish [Oathbringer]? Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] Yes.
