Skybreakers combining ability (Gravitation + Division)
alder24 replied to Dofurion's topic in Stormlight Archive
At least in the case of Shallan, she can Soulcast/change people into better versions of themselves. However it's very hard to say if that's because of Shallan's special circumstances, or if it's a natural ability of all Lightweavers and Shallan is just better at it than others. Bondsmiths can repair things specifically by the use of Adhesion and Tension - we've seen Dalinar repair a temple and statues in the Thaylen city using this combination of powers. What is a "real 0-gravity?" You're weightless, that's as much 0-gravity as it can be. We have no indication that Skybreakers can access Connection powers, we know Bondsmiths are unique in this. Division, judging from its use and Ars Arcanum description, affects primarily Physical Realm. Soooo, it's basically useless? Normal half Lashing can do exactly the same thing and this idea offers nothing new. I think that a combination of Division and Gravitation is more simple than it sounds. What does reverse Lashing do? It binds things at a distance, a combination of both Adhesion and Gravitation. What might Division and Gravitation do when combined? Destroy things at a distance - lightning strike which divides skies. Many suspect that Skybreakers would be able to create lightning with their Surge of Division, I think it would manifest like this because Skybreakers combine Division with Gravitation. -
? about broader implications of anti-investiture
alder24 replied to JohnnyKaizen's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I have a hard time believing that you can use anti-investiture or have spren made out of it. Theoretically it should be possible, practically it's impossible. To use anti-investiture as a fuel for Invested Arts, you would have to have your soul made out of anti-investiture in the first place (because when using powers, investiture flows through your soul), otherwise it will annihilate you. But having an anti-investiture soul seems impossible, as your spirit web is existing in the Spiritual Realm, which is spaceless, everything is compound into one. All infinite investiture exists there and any soul that would be somehow made out of anti-investiture should be immediately annihilated. So while theoretically anti-investiture should do whatever normal investiture can do (with some small differences), because of the fact that all souls exist in the SR, you can never make it work. No anti-spren, not using anti-investiture to fuel Surges or fabrial. Yes and no. Just being near it seems to not do anything, but touching it does create a repulsive, hurtful force. RoW ch 97: As I said, I doubt fabrials like this are possible to make, but just playing anti-tones is enough to do that. -
Death Rattle Connections (with a capital C)

It's not Hoid: -
While there is no definite answer, I believe it was Testament. I think that Lightweavers, like any other order, get their Shardblades at the 3rd Ideal - this means that all instances of Shallan summoning a Shardblade in WoK and WoR were Testament, not Pattern, until Shallan said "I killed my mother" at the very end of WoR. But there is more. During the fight with the Chasmfiend, Shallan was hiding on the other side of the chasm, while her illusions were appearing, moving and making noises near Kaladin. That's too far for Shallan to create an illusion there at her skill level, it had to move there by being attached to Pattern (like she did when Ghostbloods hid a message for her in a tree, she attached an illusion to Pattern). And only Pattern was able to give voices to illusions back then. This means it had to be Testament in Kaladin's hands. But he noticeably didn't hear the blade scream. Why? Because at that time Kaladin's bond with Syl was nearly broken, Syl was almost killed, he was unable to even breathe in Stormlight, he would be unable to hear the blade scream because that came from his bond - if Testament was even screaming at all, as I explained before. Remember, Shallan is not a reliable narrator. She keeps lying to herself, suppressing painful memories at all costs. She wouldn't have even realized what she was doing because her mind would have blocked anything related to Testament and coated it with a lie about it being Pattern. At the end of RoW Shallan remarks that she remembers using Surges after killing Testament, but before bonding Pattern, which suggest that her process of reswearing Oaths started somewhere before WoK.In WoK, she resworn one of her Truth, by saying "I'm terrified." At this point Testament wasn't a normal Deadeye. Something more was happening to her and I think we can't expect her to behave like a normal Deadeye.
-
Well, we didn't see her, but she was there, probably pulling her down by her leg. WoK ch 70: Testament wasn't always with Shallan, because she can only be near her if Shallan was recently summoning her as a blade, or if Testament had enough time to follow her by foot through the Shadesmar - which might be a little difficult when most of it is covered in the ocean of beads. But nonetheless, Testament was following her quite well, untill she was found by her friend and was taken care of by her, about a year before RoW - so that's why we didn't see her in RoW close to Shallan. Since the start of OB, I believe Shallan was not summoning Testament, so it would be really hard for her to follow Shallan around by foot, when Shallan was either flying with Kaladin, or moving between Oathgates - that's the reason we didn't see her around Shallan when she was traveling from Kholinar to Thaylen through Shadesmar.

Anyone find Kell's self-sacrifice a little weird?
alder24 replied to iLewoArtist29's topic in Mistborn
The most important thing Kelsier cared about was killing the Lord Ruler. By becoming a martyr, he solidified his new religion, which he believed would be able to unite all Skaa together to overthrow the Lord Ruler by sheer numbers. Mistborn are impressive killers, but even they can't take on an army by themselves. He falsely believed that the Lord Ruler is just a strong Allomancer and with enough people they can tie him up and kill him - he didn't know Rashek dealt with worse rebellions in the past all by himself. Without Vin drawing power from the Mists, his whole plan would only cause a decimation of the Skaa population. So yes, his plan almost failed, but it was a good plan judging by the knowledge Kelsier possessed. He already believed he was living on borrowed time and he should have died in the Pits with Mare, so it didn't matter to him if he were to die, as long as it brought the Lord Ruler one step closer to death. And his death was needed for his religion to start, without his death, OreSeur would not be able to impersonate him as miraculously survived his own death and making people actually believe that Kelsier had divine powers, with which he was going to protect all Skaa. It was a Seon, a magical thing from another world that can communicate with other Soens instantly. Kel was on Scadrial too, but he had his own Sean with him. Seons are explained in detail in the Elantris book. -
Screaming when? In both RoW and OB, Shallan never tried to summon Testament as a Shardblade and only then a deadeye screams. However, in WoK and WoR I believe that every Shardblade Shallan summoned was Testament, not Pattern, and it didn't scream too. Why? Shallan is already in the process of reswearing her broken Oaths with Testament, thus she is reconstructing her bond with her, which is a way to resurrect a deadeye (only if done by their original Radiant, the one who broke their bond). Moreover, screaming is a conscious decision made by a deadeye - Dalinar's Oathbringer was screaming less than others, because they remembered oaths Dalinar made, while every dead platespren is content in their state, thus none of them scream. Testament, because she willingly went to bond with Shallan most likely knowing she will die, might have accepted her fate and that may also be the reason she didn't scream at Shallan. I suspect however that the primary reason is that Shallan has started to reconstruct her Oaths, one of which probably was "I'm terrified" said to Testament in WoK before she Soulcasted a goblet into blood. Testament is not fully dead anymore. OB ch 89: OB ch 28: RoW I-1: WoK ch 45:

The simplest solution is to leave some Allomancers as guards with access to Atium. Problem solved. Only Coinshots and Lurchers can't be anywhere near the Pits. Leave a thug or two and you're safe against malnourished and tortured prisoners. Yes, personally I believe that it was always about Allomancers, that any Allomancer should be able to burn pure god metals, not anyone in Cosmere. Lerasium is different, because it's not you who burns it, it's your body that does it and an Allomancer burning it would get some other effect (if they know what it really can do), as Lerasium making you a Mistborn is only a side effect.
-
Trusk'our has already answered it, but I'll add a few words myself. We don't fully know, Brandon is dodgy on that question, but from the Hemalurgic table we know it steals all attributes (things like strength, senses intelligence etc - those things that make Koloss and Kandra, not powers of Allomancy and Feruchemy). Because Atium is described as stealing any power and an Atium spike is known to hold only one power, the wording "steals all attributes" seems to suggest that a Lerasium spike can steal every attribute at once, which seems quite interesting. However even Brandon said that using Lerasium as a spike is a huge waste, so I would not expect it to be terribly great in Hemalurgy. WoBs:

There is no need for all those spoiler boxes in the Cosmere section, unless you're discussing preview material, or books that are in the spoiler period. There is no new books in the spoiler period and if you warn about preview materials in the title, you don't have to put anything in a spoiler box (like if you want to discuss something from SA5 prologue, just put [SA5] in the title and you don't have to use any spoiler boxes in your topic). In other sections, like SA, you have to put anything that isn't from SA in a spoiler box, but you don't have to hide information from SA (unless it's a preview thing) - the section is all about SA, so no need to hide anything in your own topic. Yes, Hoid was offered one of the Shard, but refused it. However he was offered one of the 16 Shards, which someone else took it instead (most likely Virtuosity). There would not be a 17th Shard if Hoid accepted this offer. There are only 16 Shards in Cosmere, but it was possible to Shatter Adonalsium in a different way and different Shards in different numbers would be created, but this didn't happen. There is no 17th Shard. WoBs: But it's very interesting that the number 17 is appearing so much, especially in TLM. It may indicate something, it may be a reference to the organization of the 17th Shard, or it may be just a joke. Every Shard is present in the entire Cosmere, not everyone is aware of this (because while the power is infinite, Shard's mind isn't and it can't grasp that infinity). Their power is much weaker in those other worlds, but it still leaks and manifests as invested arts (magic systems). This does not always come from any one Shard in particular, but it can. On Ashyn magic is mostly associated with Cultivation, because it's in the Rosharan system where Cultivation is settled. On the First of the Sun it's most likely of Autonomy, because Patji the island is an Avatar of Autonomy (Autonomy was exploring her power, she became aware that her power is present in this system and she tweaked it making an Avatar). Canticle on the other hand was directly created by some powerful being (probably a Shard) as a megastructure device that has some purpose. Investiture is everywhere in Cosmere and it will manifest invested arts even when there is no Shard present in the system. Those magic systems will be much weaker than those from words where Shards reside.

I don't remember that WoB. While it's possible this is about Chana, Chana is not a Dustbringer, she never was part of the Order and her actions don't reflect the position of the Order. I think this is about what Ashspren think about Radiants after the Recreance - they want revenge, they want to hurt them and will go any length, even siding with Odium, to get their vengeance. Dustbringers are not to be trusted and Dalinar suspects this already. OB ch 107:

Those two theories are probably dead already, Iriali's religion is not meaningfully connected to Autonomy, or the Shattering. But this? I like this theory. It makes sense and explains why Elantris was abandoned and even why Iriali have golden skin and hair, if they are somewhat similar to silvery Elantrians. Good one! It doesn't necessarily mean Iriali originated on Sel.

spoilers The Forbidden Resonance (including Wind and Truth)
alder24 replied to Dofurion's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, a resonance makes two powers kind of merge into a single one. So it's not making them have 3 powers, it's actually making them have only one power, being made of two power - kind of like Mistborn spoilers: The powers interfere with each other and act like one power. WoBs: The more powers you have, the less resonance there is between them. Mistborn spoiler WoB: I don't think Bondsmiths would take squires from people who are in another order, or will be in the future - this is far too problematic and unlikely to happen. Squires themselves aren't a resonance, it's part of the nature of the Nahel Bond. There are Orders that don't have squires, but we know that Bondsmiths did have squires in the past. However, unlike any other order, those squires didn't get any powers from that, which is weird indeed. I highly doubt this is because they belong to another order at the same time (as this didn't happen in the past), or some hidden resonance, it's probably about the nature of god spren Bondsmiths are bound to. They aren't ordinary spren. -
Physics suggests time bubbles should be air tight.
alder24 replied to DrPhysics's topic in Cosmere Discussion
And you don't see any problem with that? Just like @DrPhysics described in his post, without any other interaction, pressure inside a cadmium bubble would mount up and eventually would be unbearable, if the air was allowed to freely move in and out of time bubbles, like bullets do. This doesn't happen, as neither Wayne or Marasi felt any difference in pressure - and Wayne created a bubble that almost stopped the time itself, which would make it a perfect vacuum in a blink of an eye. And the WoB was about a cadmium bubble in the vacuum of space, where there is no air going into the bubble and it should get depressurized very quickly. There is some mechanism preventing this from happening, if you can somewhat trap the air in a bubble and go to space. -
Physics suggests time bubbles should be air tight.
alder24 replied to DrPhysics's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's really interesting to consider "realistic" time bubbles. They would make a fine weapon if they behaved like this while attached to a primer cube. But just like redshift, those problems are handwaved as the Spiritual Realm shenanigans. However we do know that air is passing through a bubble, but it's also possible to somewhat trap the air inside a bubble. It seems like both of those things can't work together, but if air molecules are bounced at random directions, can't some of them randomly be bounced off the bubble instead of passing into it and the air in the bubble would be reflected back inside as you proposed? But because it was all very random, some air would still pass through the bubble. The rate at which air passes through depends only on a compression factor - the more time is being slowed down or sped up, the less air can pass through the bubble. This matches with the example of the Wayne's superbubble at the end of TLM, which had a solid, crystalized barrier. -
When do Skybreakers get a Shardblade?
alder24 replied to Steel Speedster's topic in Stormlight Archive
There is something different to Skybreakers and their Shardblade - what is this, we don't know. WoB confirms it. However this might simply mean that because they are more organized, work like a police force, thus they can't summon their Shardblade unwarranted, just like police officers can't use their firearms without a good reason. Maybe it means that their spren decide whether they can be summoned as a blade or not. Or this might suggest what you're saying, that Skybreakers get their blades later. We don't know, but this is something affecting the entire order, not just Szeth. However I find it unlikely that Skybreakers' Shardblades are being given at later Ideal, because Szeth's spren specifically said that he will earn his Shardplate after swearing the 4th Ideal. It would be very weird for them to gain their blade later than their plates. I guess Skybreakers are at the whim of their spren. RoW I-7: -
Could a soul stamper stamp a person who's been soulcast into stone back alive?
alder24 replied to Apple's question in Cosmere Q&A
Truthfully speaking, I'm not so sure of this, solely because of this WoB: Ashravan situation is related to that of Lifeless and Returned. It makes me think that just like them Ashravan died during the assassination, but Resealing was able to perfectly heal his body, to the point of bringing him back to life - however his soul already moved into the Beyond, thus he was like a Lifeless. If that was true, then Shai truely managed to create an entire soul from scratch, which is big and it would mean that you can bring a soulcasted person "back to life" - as long as you fully revive their body. -
I suspect it's nothing. Renarin is the first of his kind, the first one to bond an enlightened spren and the first one to see the future. This Truthwatcher from the past just saw how badly things are going between Radiants and the Sibling and predicted by this knowledge what will happen. Honor was not dead back then. Renarin's ability to see the future is directly Connected to one of the signs on the Voidbinding chart (2nd WoB, check out the footnote). RoW ch 54:

A few thoughts about nicrosil compounding.
alder24 replied to AffordableInvestiture's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Continuing arguments presented above: 6th - Compounding takes time, it's not instantaneous. If you want to have millions of hours worth of attribute, you have to burn metalminds for a really, really long time. Because that's what Compounding is, it's just using Allomancy - burning metals - to fuel Feruchemy, and burning metals takes time. -
Well, TSM spoilers:

I don't see this. Odium is about emotions, about Passion - it loves conflict. Odium needs Connection, he has his own Connections to all Fused, to Dalinar, to Moash etc. He can't act without proper Connection, as seen when he tries to torture Kaladin, he needs Moash's Connection to Kaladin to sent him visions (which wasn't broken at all). Every Fused is Connected to Odium and gets their power directly from him. Connections are always needed. RoW ch 15: RoW I-4: The loss of Connection doesn't leave you numb, it gives you extreme pain because a part of your soul is ripped out - only after that agony there is emptiness. This would be something that everyone affected would have felt, if emotions were Connections and Odium was breaking them. RoW ch 105: RoW ch 111: OB ch 121: Moash has given up his pain to Odium - yet his Connections to Kaladin are still intact, his emotions, pain and guilt returned two times during RoW. If Odium was breaking Connections/emotions, those Connections would not be able to be returned so rapidly. Breaking Connections is a painful and irreversible process. Once broken, they won't just return. All deadeyes also are the evidence of this. Every spren was hurt when BAM was imprisoned and this wound didn't heal. But this doesn't happen. Emotions aren't consumed, they are enflamed. Voidlight is causing emotions to grow stronger, being passionate is making them stronger - Eshonai's emotions were stronger after she bonded with a Stormspren and she could hear Rhythms of Odium. However, unlike what Odium likes to claim, he's not all emotions, he's only negative emotions. Feelings like love, or care are absent from his power. This isn't because they are consumed, they are overshadowed by other emotions who are rioted to be stronger. I don't see any evidence that emotions are Connections, this seems far-fetched. RoW ch 83: Mistborn spoiler WoB: Fused aren't Voidbinders, they are Surgebinders. Voidbinding was mostly not explored before. It usually comes from an Unmade. No, they are not. Yes, Surges are powers of creation, but they are not Connections. The access to those powers of creation is manifested by forming a bond, which is because of Honor's presence on Roshar. People don't perceive Surges as Connections, because most don't even know those exist. Moash is most likely influenced directly by one of the Unmades, he's not a Voidbinder. WoK ch 67 epigraphs: Sounds familiar? Most likely Renarin is a Voidbinder, but we don't know for sure yet. However Glys is not a Voidspren, he's a corrupted/enlightened spren. Voidbinding is somewhat close to being able to power abilities other than Surgebinding with Stormlight. If Renarin is really a Voidbinder, we can see that no emotion of his was consumed to access his powers. He's emotionally as he should be. Just to nitpick the WoB, if Connections are more like a force, then they are made of something, because fundamental forces in our universe are carried by particles like photons or gluons - and those are matter and energy. So by this comparison, Connections are still investiture, just in a different form. But that's just nitpicking.

Here's WoB about this:
-
I'm also interested in it. Truthwaching is a combination of both Surges, not just one, just like Windrunning isn't just the Surge of Gravitation - it's both. I bet Truthwatchers can see the present and maybe some glimpses of the past (more like Malatium does), which would allow them to see through any secret and uncover every truth. But this is a big speculation, based on official descriptions of their order. There are some differences in how Truthwatchers can use the Surge of Illumination, so maybe they don't use them to create illusions of lies but to show truths instead. Moreover Truthwatchers are placed in the unique position - next to Bondsmiths - in the Double Eye of the Almighty chart and this is because they have a bigger connection to CR and SR, like Bondsmiths do, which in my mind is definitely related to what they see. I really want to see a powerset of a normal Truthwatcher, but Brandon said he's gonna reveal more about Truthwachers in Renarin's book - it's a long wait ahead of us.

Tension doesn't solidify things, it makes them rigid by manipulating forces between atoms. Brandon said it can restructure atoms and for example, create a crystalline structure - therefore it would make ice out of water, because ice is just water in a crystalline structure. He said he's calling it surface tension, but it's not really a surface tension. But if Tension can manipulate surface tension as well, you can increase water's surface tension and just walk on it, like some insects and lizards do, without making it ice. In other applications, you can probably take some coal and restructure it into graphite or even diamond. I wonder if you can take imperfect gemstones and make them perfect with a little bit of Tension - seems reasonable, but gemstones are special in some way and they can't be made by Soulcasting for example, so it's likely other surges can't affect them as well. Making clothes rigid isn't useful just for weapons - tie a rope between a chasm and with Tension you can walk on it like on a rock solid surface. Turning other people's clothes rigid mid-fight would most definitely immobilize them - even if just for a moment, that's enough to make them defenseless and kill them before they break free. And if you can make things rigid, you can probably make them flexible as well - how about turning your opponent's sword or armor into a rubber? Seems fun. Air would most likely be very hard to affect by this because it's not dense at all and it would resist similarly as in Soulcasting. It's too free, vast and unbounded for Tension. I think normal applications of Tension can't change the air. Lighting and fire can’t be affected because they aren't atoms - fire is a chemical reaction, while lightning is an electric charge. Tension also seems to be strongly restricted by investiture just like Cohesion is - even the smallest amount of Stormlight in an object would prevent Stonewards from using their Surges on it.
-
Yes, because they are invested. Kaladin was mistaken by Riino for someone with Heightenings because of his invested status as a Radiant. OB ch 97: Breaths are innate investiture, being a Mistborn, or Radiant also adds to your innate investiture. Allomancy comes from Preservation's fragment in your soul, which is like Breath, innate investiture. Because he was only a Feruchemist and an Allomancer, with some small Sliverism on top of that - that's nowhere near 2000 Breaths needed for agelessness. Sure, he was strong, but in the end that's not a lot of investiture. The First Heightening extends your life by a decade only, for someone who lived for at least 1024 years, a few decades are insignificant. Not to mention that Metallic Arts deal with little to no static/kinetic investiture. The only thing that prevented his soul from being pulled into the Beyond was his status of a Sliver, but this is described as a residue on your soul, he's not significantly invested because of that. It's just a trace amount of investiture. Drink some liquid investiture, or use the Bands Yes, I think they are much higher invested than a normal person, dozens of BEUs at best - it makes sense because a Mistborn's soul stays for so long in CR, while normal people fade within seconds. However, that's still a relatively low amount of investiture.
