  1. The striking distance means something else in the modern era with tanks and planes compared to the medieval era with foot soldiers and slow supply wagons. Not knowing what Hallandren looks like on the map I wouldn't say that. If Hallandren is a long strip stretching east to west then north or south means basically the same. I wish there was a map in Warbreaker
  2. What does it mean? It can mean weeks of marching. It doesn't really explain anything. Or Bevalis is farther away from the border than T'Telir is. Or that Hallandren is spanning west to east, not south to north. It can mean a lot of things. Without maps this provides us with nothing.
  3. We don't know. Idris is north of Hallandren and that's the only thing we know. It took days for Siri to travel to T'Telir, more than a week - but we don't know any concrete numbers, it might be a month or so - and she passed through several smaller cities of Hallandren before reaching T'Telir. That's all I've been able to find. For more we have to wait for an official map, but for that we have to wait for the sequel - Nightblood - but unfortunately Brandon has no plans of writing it in the nearest 6-8 years. ch 4: Coppermind:
  4. How about spikes just rip a big piece of the spirit web, and while it's mostly what you wanted to steal, there are some leftovers ripped from other parts of your spirit web - you might steal a bit of strength with something unrelated as well?
  5. But Yumi said there were 13 other Yoki-Hijo and her memory is from before the Father Machine was activated.
  6. Good question. I think it's very likely she will stay, as the interlude mentioned that Perpendicularities opened in every major Iriali city. Wherever Zu is, it isn't likely to be at home. She might hear the message but miss the departure, which would be really sad if you asked me. But she might try to join them by using Oathgates, a column of so many people migrating should be really slow, easy to catch up.
  7. I don't remember, that's why it's "one or two" and the Coppermind only mentions "comparable to Allomancer burning pewter". I should have included the other option at the end of this quote just like I did at the beginning. Edit @Trusk'our HoA ch 39: However, Kandra don't know how Blessings are made, they can be wrong when they say "A person had died to create each spike." But more than double seems to suggest two people died (unless they were made from an Allomancer burning pewter, then his strength would count as that of two persons). Edit 2: However this could also be because TenSoon had two Blessings at this moment, and his other one, while not being of Potency, added some small amount of strength as well.
  8. No need for spoilers except for SP refrences. Yes, both Kandra and Koloss spikes are made from regular people, by stealing their attributes. They are really similar, with slight differences, but it wouldn't be hard to turn a Koloss spike into Kandra Blsessings. Yes, but there are some differences. The Set scientists are taking raw innate investiture from people, and they try to program them to give Metallic Arts. This most likely means that the spikes Set was using were made out of Nicrosil. Kandra Blessings are made out of Iron, Tin, Zinc and Copper (with ReLuur's spikes from BoM being made out of Pewter). Moreover, Set are investing spikes fully, killing 20-30 people to achieve that, Kandra Blessings seems to be made out of one or two people - because the strength of the Blessing of Potency is comparable to an Allomancer burning pewter, which doubles his strength (WoB), thus those two spikes must contain the combined strength of a single person. And because Koloss and Kandra spikes can be exchangeable after some changes, Kandra Blessings can't be done like Set did (not to mention the identity contamination problem that Set was facing). Also it wasn't said that the power from spikes run out quickly, only that the spike made a Metalborn only for a short time. We don't know if the spike lost investiture or not, this is unlikely, it's probably identity contamination problem - the identities of 20-30 different people were colliding with each other stopping the spike from working. No changes. that would require 40-60 people worth of investiture to do that like Set did it, and it would mess identity even more. Set's spikes are nowhere near to Koloss or Kandra spikes, they are closer to Inquisitor spikes. While they contain raw investiture and you can program it to give strength instead of Allomancy, it's still ~20 people worth of strength, the level that Kandra do not possess. That's not really how spikes work. Pieces of soul are trapped in the spike, they can't jump from it to another. Yes - not about any flow - I think it's likely that the Kandra spike is made with a proper, specific intent, stealing a bit more than normal spikes, then it is divided in half, slicing the power in half as well. The extra stolen part provides sentience. It's also possible, because of how the effects of Blessings are comparable to Allomancy, that they're made by spiking attributes like strength from Allomancers burning metals in the moment of spiking, thus stealing increased strength etc. But this is all speculation, we don't know that, many options are possible. SA spoilers:
  9. Have you checked the "Hide" option when writing a post? I don't know how it looks on mobiles when writing a post but it's here on pc:
  10. Well the thing on Ashyn happened, which is still called "the burning planet", Dawnshards are out there in Cosmere, Nightblood is killing Vessels (Endowment was involved in his creation) - the Father Machine isn't that far off. And I doubt this can be replicated somewhere else because this was made possible directly by what Virtuosity did. Shards like Ruin and Odium are quite limited in what they can do. Ruin was constantly opposed by Preservation, every action of his was being stopped and he couldn't move without getting Atium back (which would allow him to destroy Scadrial). If he tried to make and use such a machine, Preservation's power would simply stop him. Odium is on the other hand bound by Honor's chains, preventing him from even using his powers on most individuals. He is trapped on Braize and has limited access to Roshar. Moreover he doesn't want to destroy it or kill its people, he wants to rule over them and use them as his army. The Father machine wouldn't help him. Plus there is both Cultivation and remains of Honor on Roshar. Autonomy also wants to control other planets, not to destroy them. If she wants to destroy, she has a highly advanced army of the Man of Gold and Red, ready to invade any planet of her choosing. She doesn't need such a machine. But yes, the Father Machine is broken (which I like a bit).
  11. Goooood, very good, I'm excited No, we don't know if Chasmfieds fought. It's speculation but it's possible because they are highly intelligent. Listeners have orange blood. Yeah, that we know of for sure Yes, that's a Shin thing, often mentioned in his chapters. Using stones (gems are stones), walking on stones etc is forbidden as stones are seen as sacred by Shins. Yes, that's true - only in Vorin culture (more or less eastern Roshar). Human body isn't a perfect vessel for Stormlight, it will leak from pores and holes in the body. Even Radiant can't contain light for long, but this depends on the amount of light inhaled. However Honorblades are less efficient than Radiants, they consume more Stormlight. We don't know a lot about it. It seems like Szeth declared that Voidbringers will return soon, that another Desolation is coming, for which Shins named him Truthless and sold him as a punishment. We don't know. Now I wonder if Brandon took the quote "eyes are the window to the soul" literally. Eyes seem to have some direct connection to souls seen for example in Heralds eyes, which reflect their age, Vessel's eyes reflect their Shard's infinite power etc. But that's speculation.
  12. We do know that. ch 32: ch 49: This time it is Hoid who claims that Yoki-Hijo are invested at birth by the Spirits, which should settle earlier debate. Edit: Before any of you say Hoid is an unreliable narrator:

  14. Well, I'm basing this on the fact that, Cosmere spoilers: Also I love the way Brandon said Demoux line "odd behavior for a perpendicularity of this nature".
  15. That was insane! I love it. I've listened to it like 2 times already, with the ending even more. The Iriali departure knocked my socks off - I was not expecting it to be like that (at first I was wondering if this would happen, but because of the 17th Shard members I thought it wouldn't). It overshadowed everything else that happened in this interlude. I want to see fanarts of this already - it was epic! Now I wonder if Cusicesh assumed the role of Iriali's protector once they've arrived on Roshar or did he come with them and he always has been their protector and guide, and isn't from Roshar? Was he created on Roshar by Iriali's beliefs and perception, like some kind of personification of their Long Trail? I think this more or less confirms the 5th Land location, Cosmere spoilers: I really want to see the reaction of Fused and Regals for the entire nation, which sided with them, just leaving through spontaneous perpendicularities that appeared in every city. They must have been dumbfounded. And HOW Baon knew this/something was coming? Fortune like Hoid is using? Who was the Feruchemist healer? I wonder...
  16. Perpendicularity isn't the Surge of Transportation. They use more or less the same mechanics. Perpendicularity is a massive well of investiture that pierces all 3 Realms together, bringing them closer, connecting 3 of them into one. It's like a hole in spacetime into another dimension - a wormhole of some kind. The Surge of Transportation creates a mini-perpendicularity, it brings Realms closer together, allowing people to jump between them. That's why it most likely would be possible to take aluminum with you as you don't use investiture directly on it, you're using investiture to create a hole in between Realms.
  17. Because Spirits like art. They won't be following Yoki-Hijo like a flock of seagulls, waiting for her to command them. Simple. Spirits aren't there to serve humans, you need to attract them (maybe they exist primarily in CR and Yoki-Hijo pulls them into PR, maybe they are in the ground doing Spirit things and emerge as they are being attracted), please them and in return for the spectacle and the gift, they will serve people for a few years. Yoki-Hijo being invested and chosen by Spirit doesn't mean Spirits can't have a whim or can't do their own thing somewhere else. Not to mention Spirits are perceived as divine, thus it makes perfect sense that they would require you to gain their attention first - perception affects Splinters. There is no proof for that and Virtuosity is Splintered, there is no proof that her remnants are somewhat active in such a way. Spirits are her Splinters so Spirits chosing Yoki-Hijo fits with your speculation. That's possible but also Yoki-Hijo would still have this ability inside her spirit web. Training and having an invested art are two different things. Yumi exists, so theoretically Yoki-Hijo still exists But this is true. They might be still being chosen but because they aren't needed, nobody trains them, thus they don't know they are Yoki-Hijo. It's likely that sooner or later they would realize they can attract Spirits or maybe have a talent for art, or can communicate with them, and they would realize what they are. I admit it's possible that they are still being made but they just aren't needed to appease the Spirits anymore. However, if there was some kind of automated system for choosing Yoki-Hijo, why were there only 14 of them in the time of Yumi, not a full set of 16? It makes more sense if capricious Spirits decided that 14 is enough for whatever reason. Spirits are like Spren, there are similarities between spren deciding to bond Radiants and Spirits deciding to create Yoki-Hijo.
  18. Welcome to the Shard. I love threads like this, it's gonna be a fun journey! Are you fine with us answering some of your questions? When I see a question mark I can't stop myself from answering And just to be 100% clear - have you read all of SA, including novellas? That's Roshar. RoW: Well Chasmfiends are described as having purple blood, so maybe it's theirs (speculations)? I assume the Oathpact allows them to magically get pulled on Braize, something like what's happening to Fused later, but we don't know the actual answer. In this scene Heralds are breaking bonds with their Honorblades, thus Jezrien in OB wasn't bonded to his Honorblade. But Honorblades bonded to Heralds work differently, because Heralds are Cognitive Shadows, their soul can't die, thus the blade remains bonded with them and travels with them anywhere they go. If they die, they are pulled to Braize and their Honorblades go there with them. This works opposite to how Shardblades work, or Honorblades in the hands of mortals, like Szeth or Moash. If a Shardbearer dies, their blade appears next to their dead body. There is a certain deadline for how long Heralds can be on Roshar, otherwise they would start another Desolation, that's one thing. Generally Heralds come to Roshar, train humanity to fight, help them and fight alongside them, and when Heralds think humans are ready to fight on their own, they are going back to Braize to seal Fused and Voidspren there - humans on their own finish a Desolation and kill off all remaining Odium forces. I think it's about what the Stormfather said in OB about the timeline of Desolations - between first Desolations there was hundreds of years of break, but between the last Desolations only a few years, between the last 2 less than a year. This means that humans were fighting a Desolation year after year, without any break, exhausting them, weakening them, while the forces of Odium were not as affected, thus they seemed to get stronger instead. It was said in Prelude: and in OB ch 38: Can they willingly give it up or is this just how Jezrien tries to justify his action to ease his conscience? They are all breaking the Oath they've made, which is against Honor's intent.
  19. Oh wow, this site is actually amazing! I had no idea it existed.
  20. But the text doesn't imply he came with a ship, he could come via CR instead and the ship was native to Threnody.
  21. Merciful Domi, what is this idea? No! Just no... Now you're talking sensibly. More reasonable, but there is still not a lot of investiture in a Soulstamp it wouldn't be very effective. Mistborn spoilers: However the problem with Forged armor is that Soulstamps are really fragile - striking an armor or denting it might just collapse the Forgery. Cosmere spoilers WoBs:
  22. Fair point. I think both interpretations are valid. I will point out that we know of only one instance of the Evil attacking people, and that was when the Fallen World fell. Thus in my opinion it's for now more likely that those are the same event as we have no indication of the Evil attacking the Forests of Hell. However the words of the Chorus seem to suggest your version is more plausible (but it still can be referencing the same event). Either way both versions are possible in my opinion. ch 22: Moreover both the inhabitants of Canticle and the Chorus are well familiar with Shades and their behavior, which seems to suggest that the companions of Zellion escaped Threnody while knowing what Shades are. This is still possible when the Evil first appear, the news about forescouts dealing with Shades might be widespread on the Fallen World, however it seems far more likely that this requires some long time familiarity with them. To add more, dead Threnodites from Canticle are being turned into Shades - which is exclusive to the Forests of Hell and it didn't happen on the Fallen World. So you probably right. However it seems that the Forests of Hell weren't overrun by the Evil like the Fallen World. Nomad was there and saw Shades and the Evil. Why would he go there if there were no people on the planet? What's about "[the ship] implied to have come from Zellion?" Zellion was a person, not a place. While the name itself is Yolish in origin, this doesn't mean that the person wasn't a Threnodite, using Threnodite tech, which they might simply develop later, after the events of the Silence and the Night Brigade. There is plenty of time for that.
  23. No, I don't think so, it apparently vanished so I think even the Superiority wouldn't know this.
  24. No, this is the nature of Cryptics, they communicate with each other in a different way, with numbers, equations etc. It's hard for them to communicate with people because they don't understand human concepts like sarcasm, humor or lies - this fascinates them. Moreover at the early stages of the Bond their cognitive abilities in Physical Realm are reduced. As the Bond progresses, their mind expands and is brought back to the state they used to have in CR. Calling Cryptics autistic would be like calling humans that because they don't understand Cryptics and have troubles communicating with them. They are completely different species, with completely different ways of communicating and completely different cultures and natures. Coppermind:
  25. The Silence is a short while after the humans discovered the Forests of Hell and they've abandoned the Fallen World because of the Evil. And it's a bit before the Night Brigade was created. But they never caused the Evil to fall - during TSM the Evil is still alive. During the abandonment of the Fallen World a portion of Threnodites left the world and settled on Canticle: TSM ch 15: We don't know what caused the Evil to appear, or how long after Ambition was Splintered it came, but I think it's a fair assumption that it took some time for the Evil to become a dangerous force, it probably didn't happen right as Ambition was attacked. This is supported by the fact that before Evil appeared, people discovered the second continent already filled with Shades (which was their first contact with Shades, they didn't exist on the Fallen World). This also means that this continent was inhabited prior to Ambition Splintering, but the violent clash between her, Odium and Mercy, messed up this part of the world in the most drastic way, turning its people into Shades. It might be that the investiture of Ambition, some kind of Splinter or something like that, took some time to develop self-awareness or sentience, or maybe someone bonded with it or it corrupted something on the planet, turning into the Evil on the Fallen World. We don't know that but it took some time for it to develop. However we know more or less the origins of the Nightbrigade. Shortly after the story of Silence, the expedition to recapture the Fallen World happened and it was a bad idea. Those people are the founders of the Night Brigade. WoBs: Either way this is the chronology: Ambition was attacked in the Threnodite system and her investiture had some effect on the people and the planet itself (confirmed by Arcanum Unbounded) - the population of the smaller continent was destroyed as the result of this. People of the Fallen World discovered another continent filled with Shades - the Forests of Hell, Silence's grandmother was among the first forescouts to set foot on this continent. The Evil appeared and killed off most of the inhabitants of the Fallen World. Some escaped to the Forests, others into space. The story of Silence happens. People are talking about reclaiming the Fallen World. The expedition to reclaim the Fallen World is launched, it goes terribly wrong - the Night Brigade is founded. Long after this the story of the Sunlit Man happens, the Evil is still on Threnody. Knowing that we can speculate about their technology. Because what was left from the people on the smaller continent after the Shattering was just a bunch of Shades, we can assume that the event was so destructive that most of human technology world-wide was destroyed or hindered in some way. However, people of the Fallen World developed technology advanced enough not only to sail and rediscover the Forests of Hell, but also to escape the Evil on their spaceships into space. That's a lot. Unfortunately we can assume that this technology was lost when the Fallen World fell, because during the times of Silence, they can't even light a fire safely, not to mention use guns and gunpowder (which they have). Therefore you are right - the technology to travel into space predates the appearance of the Evil. However we don't know if that predates the Splintering of Ambition. This is unlikely because the book "Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell" happens after Warbreaker but before the SA series: This means that since the Splintering of Ambition there was between 10000 (the Shattering of Adonalsium) to 7000 years (Odium arrived or Roshar from Ashyn) before the Evil appeared. I think that the most likely scenario is that whatever technology people had before the Shard fought near Threnody, the disaster that followed destroyed most of it or made it unusable. It then took them thousands of years to develop some form of space travel before the Evil appeared and forced them to use it and escape the planet, settling on Canticle.
