  1. I currently have this as an attribute that mistborn knights have, and I am trying to differentiate them so that a person might have a tactical reason to choose between them. Good suggestion though! Would this work along the bishop's diagonal?
  2. Thank you for your input! I've been trying to figure out how to balance Atium without making it useless, and this seems like a pretty good idea. This is a good question. It is cumulative. Ex: Oresuer-King takes a piece, it can now move an extra space during each of its moves. The player then keeps adding spaces for every piece the king captures. If a the King managed to capture enough pieces this could get OP, but I imagine that getting more than 2 pieces would be difficult, so it balances out. (edit) I have updated Atium so it is now a one-time use ability.
  3. That would make sense, however I remember something about that being mentioned, but I remembered reading somewhere that there was some special way that a Returned could have children, which I assumed meant the priests were going to use that method versus the stillborn child king method.
  4. I read Warbreaker and something occurred to me. What exactly was priest's plan regarding Susebron and Siri producing an heir? Susebron, before he communicated with Siri, had the mind/understanding of a child. Siri had been instructed not to "excessively touch" the God King. How did the priests expect them to produce an heir if Susebron just expected it to "happen" and Siri was expected to sit and wait? As a follow-up, do we know how Returned can have a baby without it being stillborn?
  5. I felt like that would be a good trade-off, giving the opponent an advantage to balance possibly losing 2 pieces. This version is probably better than what I had originally thought, which was to give Vin 3 moves instead of 2. Do you have any thoughts about Marsh, Dockson, or the Hazekiller? I'm thinking that they should have attributes instead of an activatable ability. For Dockson I am trying to find something that relates to his focus on resources. I'm not sure what Marsh and the Hazekiller should be able to do.
  6. This is a joke theory, and is not meant to be taken seriously. However, if by some miracle it does turn out to be correct, I reserve the right to say I knew it all along. I came up with this when I was thinking about the chronology of the Cosmere. Currently, most of the stories released that have been based in it have been released in chronological order. This got me thinking about the Dragonsteel series, and how it is slated to be last, despite supposedly being first chronologically. I realize that this is probably because it would reveal too many secrets if it was actually first, but I came up with an alternative theory: it actually is chronologically last...from a certain point of view. What if Hoid isn't, as we have been lead to believe, the student in The Liar of Partinel but the teacher who dies? What if the real Hoid knew the Shattering was going to happen as a result of his student, and traveled to the future in order to fix it? Essentially, he would do everything he could to stop whatever disaster is coming, and then travel back to the time before the Shattering to die, as we see in TLoP. This could explain why Hoid is Brandon Sanderson's favorite character. Real Hoid would essentially be the reddest of herrings, inspiring tons of theorizing because everyone would naturally assume he is the student that takes up the name. Brandon wouldn't be able to explain this without giving away the big twist. The big reveal would then be that Hoid has in fact been dead the whole entire time, and the person we've been seeing is just his past self correcting his student's future mistakes. The Dragonsteel series would then show the new future/past of the Cosmere.
  7. I was going to post a joke theory about Hoid, which would use some information from the Liar of Partinel snippet, (namely the fact he used his master's name). Is this against the site rules? I wanted to check so that I don't accidentally break any.
  8. That would be really helpful! Let me know if you have any questions.
  9. 1. Where did you get your profile picture? 2. Besides Brandon Sanderson and Pat Rothfuss, what other authors or series to do you suggest or enjoy? 3. Which of the Cosmere stories is your favorite? Why? 4. (Not serious) What is you position on the ethical controversy of utilizing luminescent vegetation in the place of streetlights?
  10. The 17th Shard Mistborn Stormlight (Includes spoilers for WoR) Warbreaker
  11. That is very likely. The governments around the world would also likely implement measures to ensure no-one snuck one onto a plane. I was making the assumption that the kind of people who are eccentric enough to own man-eating pets would either use private planes or some kind of blackmarket. It seems like something someone would be foolish enough to do. Though it does start to reach horror-movie level of intelligence when you think about it. Thank you for that mental image. Here's an upvote and an accompanying image.
  12. What is your position on the ethical controversy of utilizing luminescent vegetation in the place of streetlights?
  13. Let's just hope they aren't scared of rabbits*. That would be terribly inconvenient. *Leporiphobia for anyone that's interested. I've always thought about this when people say they would rather have zombie cows because of their lack of speed. I don't know much about a cow's durability, (or a caribou's for that matter) but I can't imagine that a herd undead bovines would be easy to stop. However, because I feel compelled to play both sides, if man-eating rabbits were unable to reach their primary prey, they would likely adapt by eating local wildlife. Since they would multiply at an incredible rate, they would be the ultimate invasive species, potentially wreaking havoc with the world's ecosystem. Plus, odds are some eccentric person would try to keep a few as pets, enabling them to spread to different continents.
  14. When you consider the fact that infected beef would likely end up in grocery stores and fast-food chains, resulting in a huge zombie epidemic, it doesn't seem like that bad of a trade-off. At least you'll probably be able to see the rabbit herd coming. Whether you'll be able to outrun it is another matter.
  15. Can a Returned use this to change themselves into something inhuman? For example a werewolf or wolf-human hybrid? Follow-up Question: if a Returned can change themselves into something other than a person, is there a mass limitation? Somewhat Related Follow-up Question: If a Returned goes mad, how does their appearance change, if at all? Does their form become fluid or does some portion of the mind continue to keep a solid self-image?
  16. I'm trying to balance the powers based on feedback, as well as make sure the mechanics are similar across the board (unintentional chess pun). Example: Rioting, Soothing, and Smoking all revolve around a knight's move. I thought about having only special moves for each character instead of abilities, but this tended to either result in a similar problem or pieces that were different in name only. Are there any specific abilities that you think are OP or should be changed? If so, do you have any suggestions for changes? Speaking of options, here is my working list of ideas for alt. pieces that a person could use. My idea is that a person could create their own starting line-up to favor whatever strategy they like. A person would by no means be obligated to use these pieces, these would just be for those who wished to change up the game or use certain characters. Admittedly, I would suggest that a player familiarize themselves with the original rules before trying out the alternate pieces. (Spoiler for Size) I am currently looking for suggestions regarding Marsh, Dockson, and the Hazekiller. I may also rework "Vin's Rage" if it turns out to be OP. Let me know what you think!
  17. I always assumed that the person in charge of rank names ran out of in-book titles and simply came up with their own cosmere-themed ranks.
  18. Did you mean that while they are tapping the aluminum-mind, if they burned gold they would see another alternate-past shadow? Would that just be the original version of you or would that be an alternate of your alternate?
  19. Allomantic gold lets the user see an alternate past version of themselves. Feruchemical aluminum stores a person's spiritual identity. If there was a Twinborn with both powers, would they be able to store the spiritual identity of their gold shadow? If so, you could possibly manipulate this in order to quickly learn/store skills, similar to how Shai spent time in other cultures and learning to Forge her identity in specific ways. An example could be spend some time in a circus, leave, and then use this process to temporarily have the skills of an acrobat. Store enough of your shadow's identity, and then repeat the process with another way of life. Would this method work for a gold-aluminum twinborn?
  20. It’s a fairly simple question. If the world was to end because of carnivorous herbivores, which would you choose? Man-eating Rabbits are genetically engineered creatures that crave human flesh, though they can eat other animals. They hunt in packs, have incredible hearing, and breed quickly. Zombie Cows are the result of an offshoot of mad cow disease. Humans can be infected by a cow’s bite, but the resulting zombie will decompose fairly quickly. Zombie cows move at a trot unless they see food. They tend to travel in herds, and with zombie cows come zombie bulls, which move faster. So which would you choose: The Hare-bringers of Doom or The Undead Herd?
  21. Edit with the black King/Kelsier. After playing a few more times with my brother I realized an obvious flaw with this piece: If the player never uses "Kelsier's Inspiration" the black King is virtually impossible to checkmate. Kelsier is now limited to the King's two space move, however he can jump over pieces that are directly next to him. This is a compromise that limits the King's mobility while still incorporating Kelsier's "mistborness". I have tested it out, and I think it will work better. I am also considering changing "Kelsier's Inspiration", since this can result in the quick/possibly unfair loss of 2 important pieces. If anyone has played the game and has any input, please let me know. (Sorry about the double/triple post, I'm just trying to let people know when the rules are altered and why.)
  22. Hello Hemalugic_Headshot! Welcome to the Shard! Don't eat the cookies. They're high in iron, and they'll Ruin your life!* What's your favorite Cosmere story so far? Let me know if you need anything! *I've been waiting forever to use that joke
  23. Is there any way to ask Brandon Sanderson a question about the Cosmere? I was wondering because I am not able to go to any events, and I haven't seen anything that mentions how someone would do so without going to an event or getting a personalized book.
  24. I can understand what you mean; it's hard to limit the number of rules when you want to include as much from the books as you can. I've tried to make sure each piece was similar to a normal piece in the way it moved, in order to make it easier to keep it all straight. As for the special rules/abilities I'm limiting it to one attribute/effect per piece, with queens being the only real exception. Since pawn rules are uniform, that leaves 5 pieces that are unique, and I try to condense where I can. Mostly I'm trying to get feedback from people in the Testing Mistborn section so that I can make it more intuitive/easier to understand. Is there anything specific that you think I should address?
  25. Are you referring to my rules or Kingsdaughter613's rules?
