Testing Mistborn Chess
Faceless Mist-Wraith replied to Faceless Mist-Wraith's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Thank you! "Star Wars" chess sounds pretty interesting. Do you still have the rules? In other news, after a few more test games*, I've done another small edit. I've made the Soothing ability a bit more useful, since as it was nearly useless as it was before. The rule before the change was that Breeze could Soothe instead of moving, but as I played I realized this ultimately had little-to-no effect. The new rule is that Breeze can Soothe after moving, similar to how Sazed can tap a metal-mind at the end of a turn. The recharge time is now 2 turns to keep this from being overpowered. The other small edits included some more controls on Atium (you can't take the queen using Atium), some small alterations to the Inquisitor's Hemalurgy (they can use Sazed's ability for an extended period of time), and some basic clarifications with regards to castling and the limitations of the king in general. If you feel that these changes are unwarranted or unnecessary, or you have your own input from your own experiences playing the game, please let me know. *I convinced my younger brother to play the game. He hasn't read any of Sanderson's books, but he knew how to play chess, so I figured it would work. 2 hours and a very intense game later, he ended up checkmating me. It was his first time playing the game. -
Testing Mistborn Chess
Faceless Mist-Wraith replied to Faceless Mist-Wraith's topic in General Brandon Discussion
After playing the game a few times, I found some balance issues with Vin's Atium, pawn movement, and difficulty utilizing the Koloss ability. I have edited the rules to address these issues. If you notice any other balance issues while playing, please let me know. -

I tried it out today. The new queen move set does take some getting used to. I will consider changing it based on the feedback of other people. -
Kholinar Surgebinders [WoR spoilers]
Faceless Mist-Wraith replied to robardin's topic in Stormlight Archive
It's not entirely unlikely that Adolin could become a Radiant. Brandon has said that there are some orders who would approve of his actions. Maybe killing Sadeas will be the event that "breaks" him, allowing a spren bond to form. On the other hand, 4 Kholin Radiants already seems like a bit much to me. We may find out in Oathbringer. -
Hello! For those of you who don't know, I am trying to create a set of Mistborn themed chess rules. Currently I've managed to finalize a set of rules for version 1, which leads me to the next step: Testing! If people could try the rules out and let me know whether or not they work well, I would greatly appreciate it! I'm going to try them out myself, but the main issue is that I don't know many people who both are interested in Sanderson's books and know how to play chess. That, and I'm likely to be biased towards a game I created. Here are the rules for quick reference: (spoiler for size) Alternate Character Rules: Please let me know what you think! If you have any questions, feel free to let me know.

My personal theory is that it stores Foresight. It seemed like something that would go well with Atium's Age. Storing keeps a person from thinking about the future, while tapping would allow a person to make accurate guesses about when and where they should be. It would not be perfect though, since it is not true future vision.

You could try Creator's Corner. That is where most art related topics can be found. (edit) Sorry, I didn't realize this was already in Creator's Corner.

This is a fairly simple theory. Could a Forger create a seal that would turn a person into a spikeless koloss? I believe that this would be a fairly simple change, especially if you are on Scadrial, since you would simply need find a point in a person's history where they had the possibility of becoming a koloss. If they don't have one, simply introduce them to a band of koloss and have them refuse a transformation. This would give the Forger the needed probability. This method could be used to give you temporary koloss strength or maybe an instant koloss army, if you could create a generalized stamp.

I would be interested in helping you design the game, but I do not have much skill when it comes to art. Sounds like a cool idea.

I've changed Soothing to better reflect its abilities and to differentiate it from Rioting. I've balanced the other characters accordingly. I am debating whether or not to give Vin emotional allomancy, (I personally feel this would create an overpowered piece), but for now I think the rules are close to done. If anyone has any thoughts before the Mistborn Chess (Version 1) rules are finalized, please let me know.

I wondered who was in charge of TLR's hemalurgy department. And then it hit me.

That is why I made the Lord Ruler an optional piece, and made some balances should a player choose to use him. I will be making other versions set in book 3 and Era 2 at some point in the future.

I've nailed down most of the rules for the pieces. Anymore input before I finalize the basic rules? These would be the original rules, with different book 3 or Era 2 versions to come later.

The main problem with this method is that you have to get close enough to do stab him, and he would have to let you. While he may fear normal weaponry, he will probably think twice about a sword that leaks black smoke. Especially since from his viewpoint, the only thing that leaks black smoke is Ruin, so he will probably associate the sword with Ruin and give the person a wide berth.

I will look into this some more to learn more about what would be involved. If anyone else wants to volunteer or offer their services, feel free. -

I don't have much experience in programming in animation. This sounds like an interesting idea though, so I would try to help where I can. Do you know where I could learn DOS? Also, do you know how we could go about contacting people from the Shard with the right skills? Someone could always ask Brandon if this is okay, but as for the game rights I believe they reverted to Brandon after Mistborn: Birthright fell apart. -

Electrum and Atium would likely be switched, since Atium makes you a killing machine and Electrum is more useful as a defense. In my head, I imagine a person doing a specific combo to activate Electrum, at which point they would automatically dodge or counter attacks. You would then have to wait for the ability to recharge before you could use it again. -

Cosmere fighting game

This might be easier than first thought. I have thought about this as well, so I already have some basic ideas. For characters such as Mistborn, the main ones such as Kelsier and Vin did not have access to all sixteen metals, so we can ignore bendalloy, cadmium, nicrosil, and chromium for now. Next we would eliminate the less combat oriented powers such as Soothing/rioting, Coppercloud, Bronze, Aluminum, and Gold. Finally, you would have a list a powers/metals that could be used: Steel, iron, pewter, tin, electrum, atium, and duralumin. Tin and pewter may be simply assumed, but for now we'll leave it. From there you would just assign pushing and pulling to different buttons and then assign a couple attacks. These could then be mixed together in a series of combos. For the "special" metals such as electrum, atium, and duralumin, these could be activated with special combinations of moves and would wear off and need to recharge for a second use. Finally, in order to fully showcase each character's skills and abilities, you could have finishing moves that would consist of something unique to the character. Mistborn Spook had access to all 16 metals, so you would have to incorporate more special combos into the character. It's highly probable that you would leave out cadmium though, unless you wanted to have him use bendalloy and cadmium in conjunction. -

Does anyone have any input on the pawn's moves set? I was unsure whether or not giving the pawns more mobility was necessary, so I left the part italicized and bolded.

I don't believe you would be able to detonate dynamite while covered in liquid metal. Besides, he would still have to deal with the metal attached to his skin, which he wouldn't be able to get rid of. Once the metal hardens he's going to have more problems as well. I'm not an expert on how well molten metal burns through flesh, but I imagine it would burn away enough skin and muscle, after which it would remain in the wound as the metal cooled on contact with blood. (A bit gruesome but there you go.)

I am referring to when Kelsier and the Inquisitor are fighting, and Kelsier stops a series of arrows by pushing on one end of a bar and pulling on the other. He then sends these "Revolving metal pinwheels of death" at the archers. Sorry I can't get the exact quote, I don't have immediate access to the book. I will find it once I do. (edit) I realized that while Kelsier's skill is affected by being a savant, the revolving pinwheels of death require skill in both pushing and pulling, so a misting wouldn't be able to pull it off no matter how skilled they were.
