This would suggest that mistings can acquire savant-like abilities through practice, correct? I'm just thinking about how Zane could rotate on a single steel-line, and I was wondering whether a person who wasn't spiked or a savant could achieve this or similar feats, such as Kelsier's revolving metal pinwheels of death.

I've read about Wax being a Steel Savant. It could explain his skill with steel-bubbles. My question is whether a person can achieve similar abilities through effort/skill alone, or if stretching yourself out spiritually in order to become a savant is required. It seems like with tin you can at least achieve the "area sense" to a lesser degree, but I'm wondering if this applies to other metals, specifically steel and iron since they are the ones that show more outward signs when you become a savant.

When I was reading Hero of Ages, one of the coolest things I saw was how Spook gained an almost Daredevil-level of heightened. I thought that this was an incredible ability, and was somewhat disappointed that it required you to do irreversible damage to yourself. However, a short time after this I stumbled upon an interesting fact. It appears that human-echolocation is actually a thing. This may seem far-fetched, but I have done some research and you are free to fact check me. Here is a link for the basic idea: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/how-human-echolocation-allows-people-to-see-without-using-their-eyes-1916013/ Now onto the actual theory. Since people are naturally capable of echolocation, which is similar to the "area sense" that Spook had, I think it would be reasonable to assume that a tineye could also to achieve a similar ability, since non-powered people are already somewhat close. It would still require patience and training, but the misting could likely achieve the pseudo-atium effect that Spook did in HoA. I admit that they likely wouldn't have the same level of keen senses as Spook, such as being able to feel stones through clothes, but the situational awareness aspect would likely be similar if not identical. The second part of my theory/question is whether or not this is an isolated case. Can people achieve steel-mastery like Kelsier or Zane simply through their own efforts? Or is savantism still needed for some specific powers?

It just seems like it would have come up. After all, he used the power of Preservation to turn the Feruchemists into mist-wraiths (does that mean I'm an honorary Feruchemist?) specifically to avoid the Feruchemy-Allomancy mix. Since his mind was expanded at the time, allowing him to see everything in minute detail, the power should have shown him that there was nothing to worry about.

I have read this quote before, however it seems to suggest that the Lord Ruler never had anything to fear from Feruchemists breeding with the population. Yet, we see from his actions that he seemed to think otherwise. I assumed that since he had Ascended, and as a result received knowledge of Hemalurgy and all of the 16 metals, that he would have also learned that there was no chance of a fullborn being born. The fact that he enacted the breeding programs seems to suggest there was a way it could happen, because otherwise why bother?

Is reason because Harmony changed the rules? The WOB wasn't entirely clear.

What kind of rides would they have at a Mistborn theme park? Just out of curiosity.

I leave for less than hour to get some homework done and come back to find 30 new replies. That was fast. In response to the "how to become a full born" aspect, are we sure that being born that way is out of the question? TLR was afraid of this very thing happening, and he had a better understanding of hemalurgy, allomancy, and feruchemy as a result of Ascending. Similarly, if TLR had children, is there no chance they could have both abilities, but their children would have an exponentially decreased chance of doing so?

The piercings probably wouldn't work because of the water in you blood. So you can't even use Hemalurgy. Unless you want to stab someone with an exploding spike. Which kind of defeats the purpose...

I had not considered the scholar angle. Good idea! I may try to incorporate that as I try to come up with the alternate character pieces. Thank you also for the input on Breeze, I haven't gotten anything on that yet. As for having different characters for each individual bishop/rook/knight, I decided against it because I felt that having so many different move sets and abilities in one game would eventually get confusing or tedious. However, once I come up for the abilities for the other characters, such as: Spook, Marsh (pre-inquisitor), Allrianne, Zane, Inquisitor Marsh, etc., a person will be able to choose from these bishop/knight/rook possibilities in order to get the starting lineup they want. While this is an interesting idea, I feel like you would run into the issue I mentioned before with too many abilities and move-sets. As for what would happen when you get a pawn across the board and promote it I have not come up with something solid, but I was considering something along the lines of "Snapping" (pawns become mistings). I'm still working out how that should fit. (Spoiler for size) This is an interesting idea! I just have a couple questions/clarifications: For the first bolded, how does either side win if ascended pieces return after being removed? By Promote, do you mean reach the other side of the board, or a special ability? What is the Kelsier's piece's purpose after it gives its power to Vin? Can it then take pieces and be taken or has it reverted to its original "ghost" status? How does Ruin move? Does he only have a king's move set, or is he the same as Preservation? What are the rules on Ruin and Kelsier's influence? Are they similar to the rules for Soothing/Rioting? Overall, I think the ascending mechanic is pretty good, thought some of the specific rules may be a bit complicated for the casual player. I will likely try to use the mechanic when I work on the specific book 3 rules. Until then, thank you for all of your help! Here's an up vote.

I did not know about that. Do we know how Spook compared to other mistborn? Also, since the next book is titled "The Lost Metal" there is a high probability that one of the god metals will come into play. Both Lerasium and Atium fit the bill, and there's still the unknown effects of Harmonium/ettmetal.

I was thinking that if there were any mistborn, they would be among Spook's descendants. After all, he received his allomancy straight from Harmony himself, so he was likely at least a little bit stronger than the average mistborn. This would likely translate to a stronger allomancy gene, especially since he likely married Beldre. Since mistborn were still being born 1000 years after the originals swallowed the lerasium beads, and only 300 years have currently passed, we can assume that there is at least a decent genetic possibility of one of his descendants being a mistborn, provided that none of them married anyone with feruchemist genes.

How do you do a signature or put something in the bottom portion?
-
I am actually interested in becoming an author. Here is the beginning of a story I've been working on. It is meant to be a humorous take on the "Chosen Ones save the world" story. The footnotes have been moved to the bottom as a result of the format. Let me know what you think! (Spoilered for size) (Edit) For those who are wondering about the weird joke at the end of the prologue, it's a mystery that's meant to be revealed at the end of the book. I'm structuring the book so there are small hints throughout, but it's meant to make no sense at first.

I meant that you could not move the knight immediately after putting it on the board. It can move during the person's next turn, but Straff's special ability is considered a turn/move, so you can't switch them out and then move the knight. This would be considered two turns. The caveat is if the opponent uses Kelsier's inspiration and uses their to bonus moves to immediately checkmate Straff. It seemed unfair that one opponent could immediately get a checkmate, so I made it so that in this case if Straff hasn't used his ability, he can then use it to get out of a checkmate. I should probably edit it to make it easier to understand. Edited (Is that better?)

I'm perfectly fine with the Beyond remaining unknown. I've just always felt that Vin and Elend never got to enjoy the benefits of peace. They had to deal with catastrophe after catastrophe. Now that my head-canon of them happily living out their lives on a farm somewhere is dead, I would settle for Vin coming back temporarily as a champion of Harmony or something similar.

Thank you for the response! I hazily remembered cards being mentioned in Mistborn, but couldn't think of anything specific. This is much more than I had originally thought. It's interesting to see how Brandon even considered different entertainment culture while writing his stories. -
I thought about that, but since it was said that they can be used to get the same effect I thought it would work. I will probably end up revisiting that when I try to differentiate Breeze and Allrianne. For now I will wait for someone to play using these rules and give me feedback on how well it works. Do you have an idea for how Breeze should move? I don't know if he should have a knight's move or something different since he's only a misting.

I'm personally hoping that Brandon will do something like the Horn of Valere towards the end of the cosmere, and a few deceased characters will temporarily return to be champions for shards.

I already have. You can find them in the Mistborn section of the forums. They are mostly complete, I'm just trying to polish them and see what others think. -
The rules for TLR sound pretty good, thank you! As for Elend, as well as characters such as Spook and the others, I was planning on creating move sets and abilities for these characters at a later date, so that you could choose what character you want as your knights, rooks, etc., which king you would start with, so that you could create your own specialized strategy based on what pieces you first choose. First however, I would like to get the base set of rules and characters, and see whether or not they are feasible in a real game. Currently, I have an idea for Elend (mistborn version)-King and Zane-Knight/mistborn. I'm trying to match characters to pieces based on thematic equivalents, the best I can. Ex: Sazed and Inquisitors are Bishops, Leaders are Kings, etc. Allrianne would likely have similar powers and moves to Breeze, but I haven't decided on what Breeze's move set would be, due to the possible knight imbalance.
