If I real what I did correctly, I create the quote in the box for a new post, then select the border of the quote and copy it. After that you should be able to paste it into the edit text window. Edit: Only works on a computer.

The essay indicates that something is happening on Sel that they don't understand, not necessarily that there is some other entity. In any case "Something with origins lost in time." does not sound like how Khriss would describe a shard considering they don't have origins lost in time to her, judging by how well she's managed to document them.
-
The whole use of ambition in SA seems to be entirely independent of any indication of the shard since we have confirmation that there are only three shards there. Also, regarding your idea that Ambition is on Sel, Khriss states in the AU essay on Sel that it is dishardic. Considering that she is aware of Ambition's splintering and has investigated the spread of it investiture, I doubt she would label Sel as such if a significant portion of Ambition's investiture rested there. Furthermore, there is more evidence that no evidence of Ambition or its influence has been seen before 2009, at which point only Elantris, Mistborn Era 1, and Warbreaker's online drafts had been released. See this WoB from the 2008 Hero of Ages Q&A Based on what we learned afterwards, it's thought that the two interacted with directly are Devotion and Endowment, as their voices were heard by respective characters. The one we've not met but seen the power would be Dominion, as its power is spread throughout Sel in the Dor, and its power would then be seen in all the uses of power which we saw in Elantris. The last then we don't learn about until Way of Kings, but it seems to be indicating Odium. His influence on Sel is seen by the existence of the Dor, as he is the one who created it. Therefore, there isn't any room for Ambition, and a more likely explanation for the usage of ambition in Elantris is that it is simply the best word to use for that context, not some extremely vague reference to a shard.

Question about Audiobook version of Words of Radiance
Spoolofwhool replied to traceria's topic in Stormlight Archive
Original isn't canon though. -
Possibly. Chemistry isn't my absolute strong point, but I'm having trouble seeing how iron oxides would form in alcohols, unless there's oxygen dissolved into the alcohol as well. However, a cursory look seems to indicate that alcohol doesn't have a strong oxygen content, lower than water. I couldn't actually find anything that indicates that alcohol does oxidize iron, though since the alcohol would have water in it, I guess that would be a strong cause of oxidation. Fair point overall, I'll need to think about it a bit. It could just be something that Brandon missed at the time. Another possibly though is that they still aren't burning the iron oxide layer, but since it could protect the interior from being oxidized, only that is burnt.

Frost has been strongly implied to not be a shardholder.
-
Possibly, except that it's implied, or more directly stated I think, that the Returned still have their restriction and needed some method to get around it. Since they have physical bodies, that is doubtful to be complete method of getting around that restriction, but possibly still part of it.
-
Ions would form a different molecular structure than elemental forms. Since the actual qualifier of the metallic arts is the molecular structure of the metals, changing that structure should prevent or limit the metallic arts. Furthermore, just because we know it can form ions, doesn't mean that we have them actually burning those ions and not the elemental metal. Also, it doesn't just form ions by itself I'm pretty sure, and I think they're stored in a relatively inert solution.
-
Except now you've got ionic ettmetal, not elemental ettmetal which is the metal for the metallic arts. Also, I'm doubtful that ettmetal has an ionic form since it can't form an oxide.
-
I know what you're talking about. Personally I don't think that's the case at all, as we have other WoBs that state that getting a soreness off-world would be difficult as well. Additionally, while bandolier is commonly used with regards to guns and bullets, I feel like in this case it's just referring to something more like a shoulder sling bag, passed through a translation.
-
It's difficult for Returned to worldhop since they are cognitive shadows. I imagine Kelsier would have the same difficulty, and I can't see having a physical body as changing anything as Returned have one, but the cognitive and spiritual are still infused with the binding investiture. She entered the Cognitive Realm and left it, but we have no evidence that she actually went to another world. Since there is a recent WoB that says she isn't Cosmere-aware, I think that's a fair confirmation that she hasn't been to, and isn't really aware of, other worlds.
-
I see no reason why it wouldn't. We just usually don't see it hapoen because a shard messes things up. What long time are you referring to?
-
I see. I just misinterpreted what you said. Didn't missed the "there" which only pointed to Nalthian magic and thought you were referring to all magics. I wonder though, if you could create a Type IV like Nightblood which collects investiture then uses it to create temporary perpendicularities. What Nightblood does is already fairly far removed from what awakening can normally do, and assuming that only awakening is involved, it seems you could manage to create some very odd things.

Rayse is afraid of being destroyed or changed, and in his paranoia believes that as long as entities stronger than, or with comparable strength to him exist, he's in danger. His goal then is to eliminate his insecurities by eliminating any possible opposition to his power. This branches into two sub-goals: eliminate entities of great power in the Cosmere, notably the shards, and maintain his power at all costs. Trapped on Roshar, he is unable to strike out at other shards with full strength, therefore it is a barrier to his goals. He isn't really able to accomplish much of his goals, other than kill Cultivation as well.
-
Elsecalling does so by binding the surge of transportation and creating a perpendicularity within the surgebinder. Since one magic can do it, I see no reason that no others can.

I disagree with the analogy because investing isn't a necessity for shards unlike with breathing for us. Furthermore, as The One Who Connects said, it's more of a natural occurrence due to a shard being present around a world. The shard's investiture leaks into it, but at the same time I feel like the shard can consciously accelerate the process, as well as reverse it.

Assuming nicrosil can store all forms of investiture, sure. I don't think it does and I think stormlight is outside its limitations.

Powering surge binding with the metallic arts
Spoolofwhool replied to The Voiceless One's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Probably from Hero of Ages which talked about atium being Ruin's body. I dislike that it says that for the misunderstandings it caused, which I have been afflicted with previously.- 44 replies

Why Ferchemical Steel works the way it does (SoS spoilers)

That's not how iron works though. It is changing your effective mass without compromising your density somehow. Gravity is still working the way it should. -
Powering surge binding with the metallic arts
Spoolofwhool replied to The Voiceless One's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The body analogue is poor. Solid, liquid and gaseous are all investiture. Leras' mind was more bound to the Well in order to react against Ruin, but the actual Well was made from investiture. To be clear, the states of matter of the god materials are not linked to realmatic components of the shards. It's all just investiture in different states of matter With regards to being their "body," all shards are primarily spiritual, which is the investiture of their being, so to say that the physical manifestations of their investiture is their body is technically correct, but still horribly misleading as it implies a physical state previously, which is not the case. Furthermore, shards don't have a physical state by default, and the physical manifestation of their investiture is the closest to their "physical body".- 44 replies

Powering surge binding with the metallic arts
Spoolofwhool replied to The Voiceless One's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Creating this connection could be a part of the hack, yes. That would give you access to the mists though. I think you would need further hacking to make surgebinder receptive to it.- 44 replies

Most metals ores are oxide forms from which the pure elemental metal is extracted. Few to none exist naturally as the pure elemental form. If ettmetal existed as an ore, that would be as ettmetal oxide, which does not exist, meaning there is likely no ettmetal ore, and any deposit in Scadrial would've had to have been placed there artifically, in pure elemental state. Furthermore, considering the volatile nature of elemental ettmetal, this would mean that all deposits would have to extremely well separated from the water table, else they would've destroyed themselves a long time ago, especially considering the shifting of the world's crust multiple times. Finally, I find it unlikely that the Southerners found ettmetal through conventional mining techniques, as a large number of these techniques, from my understanding, involve the use of open water. While it is possible that they determined better mining techniques after the first few accidents, most of these probably would've greatly slowed down their technological development, which appears not to be the case. Therefore I still find it unlikely that ettmetal was and is existing inside the ground, and is not instead being condensed directly and openly from some other source.

Powering surge binding with the metallic arts
Spoolofwhool replied to The Voiceless One's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Theoretically yes, as it's investiture. Once again, there would have to be some hack of surgebinding to make it so that it can use a form of investiture it's not defaulted to use.- 44 replies

When you amplify a tap, compress a 50% charge for an hour into a 100% tap, you lose a bit as a cost to compound it, so the compounded tap would last for less than thirty minutes. Steel/Steel compounders would kill themselves more quickly though.
