  1. I was going to ask the same question again so I might as well revive this one. I could not find any w.o.b. so I will throw out a wild guess and someone will correct me if its wrong (so business as usual). Anyways, my idea is that they are are the the force that Harmony is trying to defend them from (that Wax sees in his most recent visit with God in Bands of Mourning). This force is apparently going under the name of Trell and has their own faceless immortals. I think this force has made a small bridgehead on South Scadrial and is seeking to conquer this area, gaining its technology, before turning its full might towards Elendel.
  2. @Left It is always cool to come across another War and Peace fan! If you will allow me to geek out for a moment I would like to share one of my favorite parts. @Orlion On a Cob You may find this of interest. Prince Andrei has returned from war and is having a difficult time of it; he is seeking a a old tree on his estates and has this epiphany (Briggs translation): 'That oak-tree, it was somewhere here in the forest. There was such an affinity between us,' he thought. 'But where was it?' As he wondered, he glanced across left and, unconsciously, without recognising it, began to admire the very tree he was looking for. The old oak was completely transformed, now spreading out a canopy of lush dark foliage and stirring gently as it wallowed in the evening sunshine. No trace now of the gnarled fingers, the scars, the old sadness and misgivings. Succulent young leaves with no twigs had burst straight through the hard bark of a hundred years; it was almost impossible that this old fellow should have grown them.'' Oh yes, that's the one,' thought the price, spontaneously overwhelmed by one of those surges of delight and renewal that belong to springtime. All the best times in his life came together sharply in his memory. The lofty sky at Austerlitz, the look of reproach on his dead wife's face*, Pierre on the ferry and that young girl who had been so enthralled by the night's beauty, the night itself and the moon... suddenly he remembered it all. 'No, life isn't over at thirty-one,' was his instant, final and irrevocable conclusion. * I have my thoughts on why this is a "best" moment, but don't want to bore anyone so you can p.m. for my take
  3. You consider one of your duties, as Best Man, is to flood the chapel of the bridegroom's chapel on the wedding day.
  4. @Orlion On a Cob You seem like a person that would enjoy War and Peace (one of my favorite books, but I always have a hard time getting people to give a try). I like the Briggs translation best of what I have tried (I believe it flows well and is the smoothest translation). Although most people recommend the Peaver/Volokhonsky translation (it is more literal translation that I think is a bit awkward at times).
  5. I read Part 2 at a fairly young age. Perhaps a more mature mind is needed to appreciate it? Thanks for the translation tip!
  6. As the name of the thread, "These stupid Ranks", suggests a lot of the rank order does not make sense. One of the highest one is Scaldrian Waffle Cook...its just some one on the mistborne planet that cooks waffles.
  7. Welcome. Warbreaker is the one with breaths. The only Sanderson book that took me three tries to finish, but I ended up really liking it. Lightsong is one of my favorite Cosmere characters. I would never tell you to avoid any Sanderson books, but hold off reading Reckoners and the Rithmatist until you finish his Cosmere works first.
  8. I always have thought that the Tranqueline Halls was the planet Yolen. It was the origin of all of humanity in the cosmere and is the cosmere standard for the creation of planets and gravity.
  9. I doubt you will be able to find anything, but if you could locate any, and I mean any, evidence to support my (probably wrong) pet theory of Tezim being a Dakhor monk. Also is seems like Khriss and Nazh are very active in era 2 of Scadrial. Perhaps any subtle reference on Roshar? Also, you probably already know this, but the letters in both books are a correspondence between Hoid and a dragon called Frost. Just thought I would mention in case you have not heard.
  10. Radiohead has a song that is inspired by part of Goethe's Faust story called "videotape." I don't know if its your style or not and I should of included this in my last post, but I forgot. Here is a youtube link:
  11. August-Blackthorne by Stina Leicht (sequel to the excellent book Cold Iron) and Court of Broken Knives by Spark Oct-Blackwing by Ed Mcdonald Nov- Oathbringer, Deadhouse Landing by Esslemont, Legend of the Galactic Heroes#5 Dec-Percepholis Rising (Expanse 7) by Corey Jan 2018-Iron Gold by Brown Summer 2018- Blackest Heart by Durfee (possibly my most anticipated book. The first book The Forgetting Moon was near perfection and I absolutely loved it) Not confirmed, but likely 2018- Thorn of Emberlain, Peace Talks, Dandelion Dynasty #3 by Liu, and Port of Shadows by Glen Cook
  12. Are you reading Goethe's interpretation of Faust? Part 1 is pretty good. Part 2 is very strange and I personally was not a fan.
  13. Maybe its bc I have read so many much more darker, but I found it to be rather light hearted. Especially compared to books like Best Served Cold, and most of KJ Parker's etc. Thanks for the post though. Appreciate your insights!
  14. So I feel that I am missing something with what is going on with this Broadsheet story in Bands of Mourning. What exactly is going on? Is the haunted man from another world or a South Scadrial? What were those ghost things that attacked the Leecher?
  15. Evidently I can't get enough of super long movies. Just started the international version of Red Cliff which is almost 5 hours.
  16. @phoenix2563 I dont have the one you are looking for, bc I also seem to remember him saying that somewhere, but I have another that gets the same idea across: What’s the difference between a Dawnshard and a Shardblade? BRANDON SANDERSON They’re actually, they… You will find out. (laughter) I can’t really reveal that right now, because that’s a RAFO. I’ve got RAFO cards that I can give you that say “Sorry I can’t answer your question.” http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=689 So by saying that you will find out how they are different confirms that they are, indeed, different. Thats how I read it at least.
  17. One of my favorite authors had a contest on his facebook page where he was standing under a mountain somewhere in Utah and the first one to guess, which one, would win a first edition signed copy of his book. I copied and pasted a list of every mountain in Utah in the comment box. He declared me the winner out of sheer ingenuity!
  18. Sergio Leone is a really interesting director! The wide, beautiful shots of the landscape followed by the really upclose shots. The slowly mounting tension (that is almost unbearable) right before the violence. The slow unraveling of a mystery and then the mind blowing reveal! I still enjoyed his "Dollars" trilogy, but this movie is kind of a deeply flawed masterpiece! Its hard to describe...people need to watch it and form their own opinions.
  19. @Draginon You had some fancy looking books in the pics you shared that looked aesthetically pleasing on the shelves. You also admitted to not yet reading LOTR; that takes a certain amount of courage
  20. @CaptainRyan So I am not trying to argue, but would like to bounce some ideas around and see what you or anyone else thinks of them. Like I said I am not really the in depth cosmere theory sharder. 1.Sometimes things take months of planning and the execution is short. It happens all the time from demolition to hosting the Super Bowl. 2.Bleeder fell to classic hubris. She didn't feel the need to dodge. 3. Assuming people were wearing the special Harmony ear rings. I think thats how it works and not everyone wears those. 4. I think the book mentions often how fallable Harmony is. 5. I imagine deer in the head lights, everyone frozen for a moment to be believable. Also didn't the needle that was injected show the Kandra in its true form for a quick moment? 6. I think the Marasi and the Governor subplot helps with this. Change for the better was coming. If Bleeder succeeded it would be tough to rebuild. 7. I think the Marasi love interest would be a easy out for Sanderson. I personally really like the Steris love story. She is a girl that has a lot of love to offer and is a great person. Society just cannot see it. I really enjoyed seeing the seeds in this book and the further development in the next.
  21. I don't know what this means would you mind explaining? I am a fairly recent member of the shard and feel like I am missing something.
  22. I look at it in a similar way. I always ask myself, "Is this a hill I am willing to die upon defending?" Even if I feel that I am right I usually apologize and ask to move on.
  23. @Paracosmic_nomenclator This page might help. Lots of good terms for you: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchy_of_the_Catholic_Church
  24. Transformer Movies. I think I have only given two of them a try, but the entire movie is just explosions and running away. The action scenes just get really boring after awhile. On the same note I have seen several movies of a director that is the opposite of Michael Bay and his name is Sergio Leone. Leone spends a rediculous amount of time building up to violence and it is over within 5 seconds.
  25. What to you do for a living and how does it seem like you are in the shard 24/7? Favorite authors besides Sanderson? Does your significant other get your Cosmere fascination? (Mine doesn't, but she is understanding about it.) Do you think your meteoric rise within the Sanderson community could lead to being a Beta Reader? Would you accept if approached?
