  1. Actually, we don't know why the Heralds went crazy, but the biggest theory is it was due to trying to break the oath pact. Besides, 'crazy' is relative. Kalak seems to be paranoid, but not delusional so not crazy. Jezrian is an alcoholic and has been for centuries, so he may well have cognitive damage. But he isn't crazy. Shalash might be; her actions do indicate some psychosis; delusions of persecution possibly. Now spoilers: So we only have one of the Heralds we've met who have been around for the past millennia who actually seems to be insane. Then there are Returned; Warbreaker clearly is not mad and neither was VaraTreledees or Arsteel. They've ALL lived longer than Kell. The Ire are a LOT older than Kell and they aren't insane. Khriss is older than Kell and is also quite sane. So I'm not sure why you would think Kell would go insane? As for his powers... it really depends on the individual. Kell is a conman first and foremost. And he's planning to find information; he seemed to me to be thinking of being Scadrial's spy. Which means his powers are actually not as useful as you'd think. The opposite really; if he has to USE most of them his mission has already failed. Bronze and Zinc being an exception, as they would be useful for intelligence gathering - but only as long as people don't know he can use them! So a little pewter, careful taps of gold (drink a lot, but not getting drunk?), bendallow and Atium for disguise, copper and bronze, the rest are used very little. It wasn't Kelsier's powers that caused the rebellion, it was his manipulation of events. He didn't help save Scadrial with his powers; he did it by conning his enemies. The powers are nice, but without them he is still very dangerous. Actually, he's just as dangerous with and without. Kell is all about the con. The powers are a bonus.
  2. There's a great line in the Vorkosigan Saga about that, which I'm going to paraphrase, 'tests are a gift and great tests are great gifts.' No one wants to be tested, but if by going through a test we become better people then isn't the test a good thing? If you can make something good out of something horrible then hasn't it ultimately been for good? Of course we'd prefer not to have experienced such a thing to begin with, but if we took away some 'bad' we'd also lose so much good. Sorry for the double post; my phone can be annoying like that sometimes.
  3. I've always felt that he didn't know they were there while he fixed the world and by the time he realized it was too late to fix things without remaking the world again. We actually know what he was thinking while he ascended and there is no indication that he knew of their existence. They were at the South magnetic pole, not the South Pole. It would not have taken ten years for them to die if it had been the other way. And it would have been too cold for the northerners too, had that been the case.
  4. Another question that needs to be asked is free will. Assuming he had the ability: If Saze took all evil inclinations from people, wouldn't that be taking away their ability to choose? If he kept them safe from all harm wouldn't they be smothered? Without struggle there is no growth. Without pain we couldn't recognize joy. If that was taken away we'd lose a major part of what it is to be human. We'd have nothing to strive for. And if we are going to blame Saze for the bad, why not blame him for the good too? If he hadn't interfered Wax and Steris might never have realized how well matched they really are!
  5. Note the word 'seen.' All the attributes we know it's stolen have been physical quadrant. When we know it's stolen something that isn't we can revisit.
  6. Also his personality; he never dealt well with internal conflict; he loves to give over knowledge (hence the slipping); and the way he speaks can make him sound confused even when he isn't...
  7. Trellium has only been seen to steal physical quadrant abilities. (I was trying to find a pattern. I feel that it can't (or shouldn't) do what Atium does as that diminishes the latter.) Hope that helps.
  8. The slow spiraling is because A) Preservation sacrificed his mind to defeat Ruin and B( because he is dieing. There is no indication that this is caused by the power itself; to the contrary, the shard's power should do the opposite.
  9. Some of us are... And damnation is a curse in RL too.
  10. Some people on Scadrial may have seen him. Saze implies that Kell is not around which could hint at him being off world. He's had a few centuries to figure out how to do it, after all. At which point we get to the spike, which he would have to disguise. Which is why I suggested blind men, one eyed ones, or illusions. the first two are an excuse to cover it; the latter simply avoids the issue.
  11. If he did create them then he has all the powers and thus does not need them. He would probably have his own metalminds though.
  12. They weren't TLR's bands. It was Kelsier's spearhead. They were created by storing identity and investiture. How Kelsier came back... Good question! When he became a feruchemist... Even better! The Survivor/Sovereign has managed to confuse us all.
  13. Easy. No metalminds allowed during testing. No burning metals either. If you do it anyway, well, here's the door...
  14. I think it may well be legalized in a similar manner to organ donation. Whether or not it is ethical will likely be argued by many in world characters. One possibility is that the Survivorists may allow it, depending on their reaction to Kelsier's use of it. That would be a major shift from the RL Catholic Church which does not allow euthanasia. This opens the possibility of greater acceptance. (As an aside, I REALLY want to see how the Survivorists react to the Sovereign...Major theological upheaval incoming!) The Southerners, if the excisors are spikes, are clearly somewhat comfortable with the idea. (I rather think that the Southerners fire parents are reusing the same spikes over and over.) However, there would likely be many major laws about when and where Hemalurgy can be used. And terrible penalties for violating the laws.
  15. Feruchemical zinc could work too, especially paired with Allomantic tin. You would be thinking fast enough, with sharp enough senses to see how the Atium burner reacts to your potential action, allowing you to change said action before it occurs, thereby splitting your Atium shadow.
  16. So it was confirmed that that was when the switch happened? I must have missed that. Thanks for the info! But I thought the Kandra created blood when they impersonated someone? Mist wraiths don't seem red tinged, so I doubt their blood is the same as humans.
  17. We didn't know of ambition when we got the WoB. We hadn't seen him yet. That's why I say it can't be him. The Selish Shards seem to be the most shattered to me, due to being stuck in the Cognitive realm.
  18. Trell is confirmed to be a Shard we know of. At the time that happened we knew of Harmony, Autonomy, Odium, Cultivation, Honor, Dominion, Devotion and Endowment. We also know it isn't Edgli. D&D are splintered as is Honor. That leaves Autonomy, Odium, Cultivation and Harmony himself as our options for Trell. As an aside, I wonder if the Shard opposite Ambition is Humility?
  19. That wasn't OreSeur...
  20. Thank you.
  21. I have a non verbal learning disability which, for me, presents a lot like aspergers (which presents differently than many other ASDs). Steris' experiences felt very similar to my own. I also have no problem expressing emotion. I have also learned to do things (such as making eye contact) by rote. Actually, many people with Aspergers are very self aware and find it easy to express their thoughts and feelings. The problem is doing so in an appropriate manner and setting. The other problem is trying to make sense of people who don't say what they are feeling, but couch it in social mores and cues which is where the difficulty lies. (This is one of the reasons Aspergers being put on the ASD list is still being argued. DSM 6 may switch it up again.) I don't know who you know with Mental illness or disability, but the ones I have worked run through a rather extensive spectrum. Some are self conscious, some are not. People with Down's Syndrome tend not to be self centered. One of the nicest people in my school had terrible Cerebral Palsy. Just as people without Mental illnesses or disabilities can be selfish, so can those with. FYI, I'm training to be a therapist, and have worked about 150 hours in different psychiatric settings. I've seen a lot of different people with different types of mental difficulties and they were each unique and different.
  22. Suspected throughout (I knew it couldn't be Rashek.) Oddly, I realized Kelsier was coming back BEFORE I was certain of the Sovereign's identity. Marasi's graveyard monologue tipped me off to the former and Allik's description of the Sovereign confirmed the latter. Still shocked he came back in this series though! (I expected it to be in the 1980's one...)
  23. I'll have to check it out!
  24. And the MAG turned out to be totally wrong with regard to how certain feruchemical powers worked. So I'm not going to assume it's accurate until the books confirm it.
  25. The only thing I can find is the old (inaccurate) ars arcanum from Mistborn. The hemalurgic abilities of metals are not listed in the new books. And I can't find anything on theoryland about it either. If the source is from that ars arcanum it may be wrong...
