  1. So maybe my idea isn't totally crazy... upvotes to both of you!
  2. Straff says all his mistresses are noble in the book; that's what I meant. I see the coppermind says otherwise, so is there a WoB that Zane's mother was an exception?
  3. If, and this is an if, Atium electrum Alloy has the same effect as Atium, it's possible that when Preservation added it to the metals chart he 'locked' it into that, possibly because the other addition was malatium and it was necessary due to how the metals work. (Push/Pull and Internal/External) This would only effect Allomancy (the only place Preservation could enact the switch) and not Hemalurgy or Feruchemy. It would also mean that Atium should actually do something else in allomancy, and does now that Saze has put things back to the way they were. You could probably still use Atium for whatever it originally did, but you would need to know what that was and no one does... It would make a funny sort of sense actually. Atium should really be the opposing compliment of Lerasium when you think about it. Since the above requires several theories to be accurate, I don't have much faith in it. But if anyone wants to ask Brandon about it, feel free!
  4. Zane was not a Skaa Mistborn; Straff makes that clear.
  5. Psychopath is a misleading term. It's not recognized by the DSM and can be used to describe: A: someone lacking or having limited empathy. This type of person can be law abiding and have stable relationships, but may view others as tools and think nothing of using them. Such a person might be a ruthless business man, a callous physician or, yes, a con artist. Kell fits this description of psychopathy, and I believe that this is the type Brandon was mainly speaking of. Note that there is nothing stopping these individuals from doing or intending guilt. B: Someone who enjoys inflicting pain on others. These people are often, in conjunction with one, the people psychopath is most often associated with. To this I'll answer with a Talmudic paraphrase: 'if a person delights in spilling blood he can be a mohel (person who performs circumcision) an animal slaughterer, or a murderer'. In other words, just because you enjoy seeing or spilling blood doesn't make you a horrible person. Kelsier does fit into this category as he does enjoy killing. He makes sure to control it though, so not a problem. C: someone who engages in rampant, repetitive, and violent, destructive criminal behavior. Well... considering the final Empire that applies to everyone on the crew... hmm... All kidding aside, I don't actually feel Kell falls into this category, due to the 'violent' and 'destructive' aspects of it. In a more typical society he'd probably be a non violent con artist. D: diminished or lacking a sense of responsibilty; diminished or lacking regard for consequences; diminished or lacking feelings of guilt. I put these together as they are all variants on a theme. Kelsier falls into this category by nature, but I think he's learned to feel those things. The difference between most people and this kind of 'psychopath' is that they have to learn this and most people don't. Again, nothing here means they will do bad things. E: someone who continually commits violent sexual offenses with no capacity for rehabilitation. Definitely does not apply to Kell! It is one of the more common things found in criminal psychopaths. F: someone with ASPD. I don't think Kell has this; I think he's more likely to have NPD. He has some elements of ASPD, but there is quite a bit of overlap. As you can see 'psycopath' has many different possible meanings and only three of the above actually require criminal activity. Some do apply to Kell; some don't. As I am of the opinion that psychopathy is inborn, I feel that if it is ever added to the DSM the criminal qualifications should be removed. Maybe make it comorbid with ASPD (which is what we usually diagnose psychopaths as having.) Or, in other words, depending on your definition you can have a psychopath be a good person.
  6. Kell totally does that. Marsh gets rather irritated when he does - which may be why Kell does it... @WhiteLeeopard I know what Brandon says... and Kell STILL fails the actual test! (The Hare PCLR, for anyone who is curious.) Working with that, Kell can still be a psychopath and a good person. There are different types of psychopathy (which is not currently a disorder; Harr believes it should be.) Kell has the core personality traits of a psychopath (factor A), but is missing many of the behaviors (factor B). Many people can be 'psychopaths' and live normal lives. The most important factor for Kelsier is that he WANTS to do good. He knows he isn't naturally a good person, and he tries to be better despite that. Which has the end result of making him a good person, even if his personality would argue otherwise. Edit: I should point out that my test results are skewed due to the 'revocation of conditional parole.' It's not applicable (as it didn't happen) so always gets a zero. Never mind that Kell would totally do that if it DID come up... but it hasn't, so still zero.
  7. One of the Western ones most likely, due to the blond hair. Kell and Marsh weren't exactly discovered - Kell thinks about how they had a choice between noble or Skaa. Which is very, very interesting, as it requires their father to have died right after their mother... I think Brandon is hiding a lot here...
  8. Spook did know he was pierced by metal, he just didn't think about it. The point is that you consider the space in the earring hole part of your body.
  9. They consider it to be 'piercing' their body though.
  10. My personal theory: the women are being bred, the children snapped and killed for Hemalurgy. Which is beyond horrible.
  11. I think it's actually perception based. Typically, we view an earring as being in our body (irrespective of the technical reality). If someone viewed their piercing as a hole, and the earring as not penetrating their body then it's possible the spike may not work.
  12. Yes, but a stable paradox does work in the story, so the letter should work.
  13. That's the idea. He writes a letter explaining what happened and what he has to do. Now he will always follow the directions in the letter and send the letter back to himself - but he will never write the original letter. It's a stable loop, like the one described in the story.
  14. He could write himself a letter telling himself what to do. This way he will always do it.
  15. Depends on the plot, but I'd be interested in trying.
  16. Know I'm really curious... will they make a stable loop or not... Great job!
  17. We've already seen Harmonium. It's ettmetal. That being the case I suspect it is located in the South (and might well become a point of contention between North and South.)
  18. @StrikerEZ Just wait until you meet the Sovereign. That being said, I believe Brandon has confirmed that there will be no natural Fullborn. The genetics won't allow it.
  19. Both Shards on Sel are splintered, so I'm a little confused by the last post. As for dragons, one of the few things we do know is that they existed on Yolen prior to the Shattering, so they aught to use Adonalsium's investiture. Not sure if that helps or not. Do you think you could PM me about how you did Scadrian investiture in D&D rules? I'm trying to figure that one out myself.
  20. Or faked his death. Or disappeared for long enough it was assumed he died. Or had his family claim he died when he didn't. He could have also gone beyond. We really don't know. All we know is that he reigned for 100 years, then stepped down. That seems to be the last anyone has heard of him...
  21. Interestingly, I think bendalloy and cadmium have their in world descriptions confused. Bendalloy is slowing time and Cadmium speeds it up. Bendalloy makes seconds seem like minutes, To the people in the bubble it seems that time is moving faster. Cadmium makes hours feel like minutes, which makes me think that time in the bubble is compressed. The people in the bubble perceive themselves as moving slower than the world, which they are, so assume time is going slower. The above WoB seems to agree with this actually, as he mentions slowing time relative to a 'speed' bubble.
  22. The third card in my deck is the Misting, taking the place of the high Priestess. The High Priestess card symbolizes intuition, mystery, and the unconscious mind. Reversed it indicates hidden agendas and a need to listen to one's inner voice. I picked Beldre for this card because it made me think of her. She's a Misting, but we don't know that when we meet her. She brings out the best in Spook, symbolizing -to me anyway- his inner voice. And she is rather intuitive. For myself, I find a purity and innocence to the High Priestess and I find those same qualities in Beldre. For more in world reasons, I'm assuming Beldre marries Spook, which would lead to her being better known. Those who knew them would see her as being a balancing force on him (as opposed to some others... I'm glaring at you, Kell!) She's not especially open about her abilities, but people do know she had them. The pillars Symbolize Ruin and Preservation. Harmony's symbol is for Unity and Spirituality. The blue curtain is for wisdom, privacy, and the blue skies she'll soon see. The grey and red background is the world of Ash. The plant is a greenish brown mix; the two colors merging are a reference to the changing world. Beldre wears a simple brown Skaa dress, signifying her innocence and simplicity. The metal minds she wears tie into Harmony's symbol; they are his bands and imply knowledge and mystery. Beldre is Pushing boxings, giving the card its name. Her hands are crossed over a spear, the symbol of the Survivor/Sovereign. In my mind this card is often paired with Fool card on Scadrial, due to the characters on them. Another example would be the Sovereign and the Survivor, for the obvious reason. The hardest part of this card was working around the lunar imagery of the original. Scadrial not having a Moon is annoying! The card was first sketched out in rough, then the actual thing was done on the card in pencil. It was inked with black pens of varying widths and colored with oil pastels. Finally, I added metallic marker to add a shine to parts of the image.
  23. It's fine. A lot of the cards have non-intuitive meanings. Like the Fool implying new beginnings, or Death change. Others are obvious though; the empress is pretty self evident. It's quite fascinating actually. Part of what I love about this project is how much I'm learning!
  24. The word distill makes me think of how you separate salt from water.
