  1. In Jewish theology we hold that one can pray to God without any intermediary, at any time and in any language and He always answers (albeit in ways we don’t always recognize and sometimes with a no). So the ten orders of angels are more interesting to know about than actually important for the day to day. Why bother with servants when you can speak directly to the king whenever you choose? On a completely different topic, that translation needs work. It’s not a very good one. You’d be better off reading the Hebrew, or seeing if there is a better translation available- one written alongside the original language would be preferable.
  2. The original Feruchemists came about through unknown means. My guess is that Kell found out how while holding Preservation, and replicated it. (Which might actually make him a more powerful Feruchemist than Mistborn...)
  3. How would the second heightening affect Amusia? Would the effect be an auditory counterpart to the visual effects of a heightening on color blindness?
  4. This being Tolkien, he actually wrote the two other languages (Sindarin and Westron) before the actual stories! So depending on where and when he decided on the names it may have actually been translated... from two different languages he invented! (And lets not forget the original Quenya that Sindarin originated from, nor that it is Adunaic from which Westron derives...) Benefits of being a philogist; he really loved his languages and roots. (But then, the elves fell from grace, in part, over the matter of a shibboleth...) I don’t think anyone else using that convention has ever done it as well. Old Quenya, Noldorin, Sindarin, Vanyarin?, some variations for the Falmari and the Teleri...and that’s just the Elves! Adunaic and Westron, the Black Speech, Khuzdul, and Valarin! And I’m fairly certain I’m missing at least one... Some more complete than others, some simply better recorded... Translation convention works so much better when you’ve actually written all of the languages you’re ‘translating.’ He actually write some things in his languages! (Some are complete enough to be spoken, though I keep running into grammatical issues when attempting Noldorin.) And when I visited Brandywine I, too, could not stop joking about the Shire... obviously, some hobbits emigrated from the hills of England.
  5. It is also useful for the Inquisitors to know who the Skaa copperclouds are, as other Skaa mistings will congregate around them. By leaving some copperclouds intact they can find more mistings than they would have otherwise.
  6. Mine sounds like this too. Very young and chipper preadolescent. Maybe the way Dick sounds in YJ season 1? But mostly like my five year old. Because it’s a pre-adolescent voice you can’t tell if it’s male or female as those changes have yet to occur.
  7. Amusia is the inability to hear the difference in pitch and tone in music. They can hear differences in speech. So it’s more like color blindness, where certain colors can’t be perceived; people with amusia can’t percieve certain types of tonal changes. Interestingly, this indicates that music is not processed by the same part of the brain that processes speech. I should ask that if I get the leather bound Warbreaker...
  8. So, I came across a WoB where he says that, if someone who was colorblind gained Breath, colors would still saturate but the color blindness would not be fixed. It occurred to me, what would that mean for someone with true Amusia? Ideas?
  9. I seem to recall a WoB that blind coinshots/Lurchers/mistborn can sense the metal without seeing the lines. Why not consider a situation where the intent isn’t to kill by to discover. So you have a steelrunner moving just slow enough for the seer to react to. The steelrunner is trying to tag the seer. How many Atium shadows can you get?
  10. Not all Inquisitors could pierce copperclouds either. Only those who had been Mistborn or Seekers prior to their transition into Inquisitors.
  11. Totally! I think I just have too many people in my life who think comics are silly, so now my instinct is to defend them.
  12. Why do you think comic book villains are two dimensional? Many of them are highly complex; the best usually are. Some even switch sides and join the heroes. They’ve come a long way since the Gold and Silver age.
  13. He isn’t a psychopath based on the PCLR, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a neurological psychopath. Not all psychopaths are horrible people. It has more to do with how their brains work. Psycopaths are capable of turning their empathy on and off. They tend to be manipulative, egotistical, and view the world as it applies to themselves. They also, and this is the big one, have a LOT of trouble feeling guilt. Therapy with a Criminal psychopath essentially involves teaching them to feel guilty. A law abiding psychopath sees following the law as beneficial to himself and those he cares for. Psychopaths do love. But their other tendencies mean that they may end up hurting those they care for. It’s very hard for them to see another’s perspective, though they can. They have trouble reconciling someone disagreeing with them, but not repudiating them, as they tend to see things as ‘with me or against me’; ‘my way or the highway.’ They also manipulate everyone around them and often fail to realize the emotional effect this will have. I’m firmly convinced that Batman is a neurological psychopath. It explains a lot of the issues and behaviors of his character, and pairs nicely with him being, in his own way, as insane as those he fights with the potential to become just like them. I doubt the writers did this intentionally though! (Note to self: perform PCLR using Batman’s shown behaviors...) Kell doesn’t quite make the PCLR, but he is close. He could pass; I decided that certain things didn’t get full points based on lack of knowledge (on my part)/forced by circumstances (on his). For example, Kell’s very existence was a crime; I wasn’t counting that! Kell mostly didn’t pass because he was in a steady monogamous relationship, though. I would say Kell is a neurological psychopath. I also think he wants to do good, views it as beneficial to himself to do good (because it makes him feel good) and so is technically good. He will remain there as he views things, but others may not agree with him on what ‘good’ is.
  14. No, someone on a topic mentioned one about Kell using his own bones. I just don’t remember where I saw it... or when. I’ve seen that one too though.
  15. Your villain makes me think of the Joker... was that intentional or a coincidence? Either way, in my head he sounds like Mark Hamill. Great job!
  16. Fortunately, we now have a hemalurgy chart! Duralumin steals Connection and Identity!
  17. I saw someone quoting in another topic. I have no clue where to find it again...
  18. I think there was a WoB that he isn’t using his original body?
  19. Ok. I posted it here, or you can take a peek at my DeviantArt page (same user name.) I’ll have to look for the link. I also need to start working on my tarot deck again...
  20. ‘Ising am the loving of my children’ seems wrong. Mostly the last two words; I think eastern street slang has another word for children, and a conjunction indicating ownership?
  21. Well, someone on the Shard (forgot whom) recently noticed that the Terris prophecies say his name shall be Discord... I doubt it will happen in the quartet though - maybe in Era 3?
  22. Then there’s those alomantic devices; you could probably alter one to store heat, and toss that into the fire. It would stop certain types of ignitions (I forget the name, but it’s when the room is superheated but lacks oxygen) and would make it easier to enter a fire. It shouldn’t actually stop the fire from burning though; it should remove the heat from the fire allowing it to be smothered, and preventing further consumption of fuel. (So it would go out, but not directly due to the heat removed, just indirectly.) Hmm... fire suppression systems...
  23. I don’t consider it cruel and unusual if the person makes a conscious choice with full understanding as to the effects. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be an ethical issue in-world or out, but I wouldn’t consider it cruel to allow someone - who is going to be killed, no matter what - the freedom to choose the means, even if that means might be a rather barbaric one. Honestly, I feel taking away that last choice is far crueler than any method the condemned might choose.
  24. This requires that people know about this. And it hasn’t stopped the Nalthians from selling breath yet! There will always be those who don’t care too much about any spiritual side effects. And then there are those who will view it as keeping a part of a revered ancestor’s soul alive. That’s why I suggested options for the death row prisoners. I don’t consider it cruel and unusual if they choose to be spiked. Then it’s their choice.
  25. If the person is under heavy anesthesia when they are spiked I doubt it would be very traumatic. And after, they’re no longer alive. To minimize trauma to the recipient, spikes would be shaped into thin needles (varying from knitting to sewing needle in diameter) and inserted while under anesthesia or as an emergency, life saving, measure. Gold medallions would allow the spikes to be removed. Spiking as a method of execution would be determined based on the individuals belief system. You’d get options: spiked under anesthesia, bullet to the heart/center of the forehead, poison/lethal injection. (IRL, why don’t we give options to people being executed? And why don’t we put them under anesthesia?) In world, it would be very controversial. If spiking is chosen the spike (decided after several lawsuits) is given to the family (initially it went to the government.) If there is no family, the government takes possession. Spikes are considered assets with regard to estate taxes. There is a set value, adjusted for inflation, for each kind of spike.
