Thanks! I will, try, to figure it out. My Japanese is pretty terrible now-adays and even at my best I still was barely 3-grade (or so) literate haha. Edit: Google translate gave me this as the title: "Mistbone - The Fog of the Fog <1> The Gray Empire" Is this, perhaps, a TenSoon fanfic!? (/s)

17th Shard ASSEMBLE! I need some help. Does anyone know of a website where I can purchase the Mistborn series in Japanese per chance? Thanks in advance!

Welcome! The Stormlight Archive is a great series! If you enjoyed it this much then I highly recommend checking out some of Brandon's other works: the Mistborn series, Warbreaker, Elantris, etc. There is a lot of good material out there to help pass the time until you and your girlfriend can be back together!

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
CaptainRyan replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
(Edit: Sorry this is a bit of a wall of text) I just started a new job at a company that has a food court style cafeteria on the 25th floor (swanky no?). A couple of days ago I was waiting for my order and I got confused as to which order was currently be handled. I approached the server (who I now know is named Kyle) and asked him if he was working on number 16 (my order). He replied "Yes, this is number 16. And hey, what a coincidence, that is my favorite number!" Well, perhaps many of you can already guess where this is headed. I immediately said that if 16 is his favorite number then he should definitely read the Mistborn trilogy as the number 16 eventually has some significance in the story. He and I then chatted about the story for a few minutes and he had me spell the title to help him remember. The next day I saw Kyle again at the cafeteria and he asked me the name of the book I recommended. I realized what I needed to do. That day, after work, I went to Barnes and Nobles and bought a copy of Mistborn: the Final Empire. Today, I gifted that copy to Kyle! So, you know you are a Sanderfan when you buy the cafeteria server at your work a copy of Mistborn because they mentioned, offhand, that 16 is their favorite number. -
So, I tried my hand at this too. I moved Kaladin to the middle to help balance out the look. Jasnah is a bit blurry as I had to zoom in on her to get her to match Shallan's size better. I am posting two (2) versions; one is a PNG file and the other is a JPEG. Not sure if there is a big quality difference but I thought I would give people the option.

Why lock it down? I mean, have you seen the "Roshar vs Scadrial" thread? Talk about spinning in circles haha. If people want to, civilly, discuss or even rehash the points made how, exactly, does that bother anyone else? Let them talk. No one is forced to view this thread, right? @Rockobar obviously struck a nerve with this topic. Some of that was based on the tone/delivery but I genuinely think a large portion of the brouhaha (is there a proper way to spell that? edit: spell checker said there is!) is because Rockobar had the gall to point to the elephant in the room and say, "Hey, I do not like this elephant." There is some legitimate discussion to be had about Brandon's writing style and as this is the "General Discussion" forum I would imagine this is a good place to talk about it. So, let people talk. Again, why should we shut down an entire thread because a couple of people rehash points made?

This is a minor correction but globes are not "to scale". Australia is exactly to scale on a globe as are the other landmasses.

So... big freeloader question: Is anyone going to transcribe those videos and share them here?

Question about Audiobook version of Words of Radiance
CaptainRyan replied to traceria's topic in Stormlight Archive
The original will always be my heart-canon for that scene. -
Any Alpha or Beta Readers on Here?
CaptainRyan replied to Jsin82's topic in General Brandon Discussion
@Jsin82 Upvote because why the heck are people downvoting a simple request? Also, I completely agree with you. The word is, in my opinion, ill-chosen. I respect Brandon as an author but I think this was a mistake. Alas, Brandon has yet to ask for my advice. -
Personally, this kind of stuff makes me sad. I wish people, whether on a bus in San Francisco or on the 17th Shard, could hear/read something they vehemently, viscerally disagree with but still engage in a kind, respectful manner. (Disclaimer: I have been guilty of reacting emotionally instead of calmly. I think we all have.)

Question about Audiobook version of Words of Radiance
CaptainRyan replied to traceria's topic in Stormlight Archive
He should stick with the original - it was a much better ending. (in my opinion, not that anyone asked for it haha) -
Hm, perhaps I am just terrible at embedding links. Here is the full url: https://brandonsanderson.com/euology-my-history-as-a-writer/ Sorry for the trouble.

Ahahaha, I accidentally put in a link from work. Microsoft would be terribly annoyed if I let you look at that link. I put in an edit- try it now!

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
CaptainRyan replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
So, my wife went to the hospital today (no worries, everything seems to be fine) and when she called me to tell me about it she remarked how the person in the bed next to hers kept repeating a phrase over and over and over. I told her it was obvious what was happening... that patient had become a member of the Hoed! I suggested she go to the front of the hospital and try drawing the chasm line. -
This might be of some help - it is Brandon describing how he became a writer. Edit: Added the correct link (I think)

SUPER EDIT: In my opinion, I do not think a downvote is warranted for this post. I will be supplying an upvote to counteract the downvotes I am seeing. I do not agree with the general premise, or delivery, of the OP but I also think we, as a community, need to be welcoming to new people and new ideas - even if we do not agree with them. Rockobar did not do anything worthy of a downvote, imo. I also recognize that people might disagree with me so please take this simply as a request for kindness and not a reprimand to anyone who did downvote. First of all, welcome to the forums @Rockobar! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with the rest of the 17th Shard. Second, I want to add a disclaimer before I respond. It should go without saying, though I will say it anyway, that each and every person is allowed their own opinion of Brandon's work, his style, their favorite ice cream, etc. My response is merely a reflection of my own opinion. That out of the way, I would have to say that I object to some of what you wrote Rockobar. Particularly this line: Is that really his task as an artist? Because, honestly, I think it can be far more expansive than that. I've viewed Brandon's "task" or, #jokingnotjoking, his "Intent" as sharing with us the Cosmere and any other works he decides to write. Brandon is under no obligation to produce a certain style of work, to explore certain themes, or to do anything really other than what he and his publishers work out in contract. Now, obviously, Brandon needs to write things that people want or else he will not be offered more contracts by his publishers haha, but, in the end, Brandon has no mandate to relate or expound upon the emotions that are in our lives. You might want that. Others might want that. But to declare it his task as an artist is a bit presumptuous in my opinion. Honestly, this letter seems to be your projection of what a writer is or what they should write about mingled with your inherent assumptions and biases. E.g.: Do you find it inconceivable that there exists a subset of people who would choose to save six (6) billion strangers over their family? This is what you boil religion down to? A social construct to prevent STIs? Again, you can have any opinion you want but I guarantee you that Brandon, and millions of other followers of religion, will not be swayed by this theory. I am optimistic that we will see an amazing blend of fantasy and sci-fi. All that being said, I did want to say, again, welcome and I hope you will not take the tepid reception of your first post too hard.

I will be honest, I have never listened to Writing Excuses nor am I a writer but when I read your post what came to mind was, perhaps, write a paragraph for each character that describes them as the lead character of your novel/idea/comic/whatever. E.g. Wax, from the Era 2 Mistborn novels, might have had a paragraph along these lines: An experienced lawman from the Roughs has to return to the city of his birth to confront the very situation that drove him to leave decades ago. The conflict of an old dog forced to learn new tricks while adapting to an uncomfortable, but all too familiar, environment can provide plenty of room for character growth. [etc.] Whereas Marasi's might have been more like: Young, inexperienced but full of knowledge, idealism, and foresight, Marasi would make an excellent lead character as she can provide the reader with a great sense of purpose. Her ability to see beyond the moment and plan ahead will allow for some great foreshadowing and plot twists. [etc.] I might be playing the role of an casting agent trying to convince a director in those sentences haha but I think it might help you decide on the potential strengths/weaknesses of each character in the proposed role. Or, you know, I could be completely wrong. Sorry if what I wrote is just absolute nonsense haha. Edit: Just saw this was your first post! Welcome to the forum Roy! Happy to have you!

Graphic Audio Adaptations Master Thread
CaptainRyan replied to Argent's topic in General Brandon Discussion
@Argent I thought I should tell you that it seems a lot of the cover links in the OP seem to be broken (specifically WoK 3 and 4). -
Lerasium seems to be confirmed as not giving other powers but... what about alloys of Lerasium? My best guess would be that an alloy of Lerasium could give Feruchemy but my wild guess would be that if you alloy Lerasium with the right stuff from other worlds then you could use the Lerasium alloy to gain any power.
-
I believe we know that Feruchemy does not evenly spread through a metal mind but, instead, fills like a hard drive with new data being added. There was a WoB about if one Feruchemist stores something in a metalmind and then another Feruchemist stores it what would happen and Brandon said that the part of the metal mind that the first Feruchemist stored would be inaccessible to the second Feruchemist. He then gave the example of "corrupted sections of a hard drive". Adding a bit more @The One Who Connects, @8bitBob: To clarify, I was not responding directly to the OP's question about the size of metalminds but the followup question involving storing in New Cago and then tapping from another part of the city and how that would affect rates of transfer, etc. 8bitBob supplied the below WoB's and I think they help me make a case for my argument that Feruchemical charges are not stored evenly throughout the metalmind but, instead, fill up specific parts. From below: "...the charges are just stored in separate pieces of the metal...". This is discussing if two Feruchemists use the same metalmind. Their charges are stored separately in the metalmind. If the first charge was spread evenly throughout the metalmind then the second charge would seem to mingle with the first, no? The hard drive analogy used by Brandon seems to support this idea of separating differently keyed charges into separate portion of the metalmind. I would like to see Brandon answer the following question to help further clarify: "If a Feruchemist/Ferring stores a small amount of an attribute in a metalmind and then cuts that metalmind in half, would each half have equal portions of the stored attribute?"

Urithiru is Soulcast & What's Up With Holy Crem
CaptainRyan replied to ArborealEtymologist's topic in Stormlight Archive
Award for the strangest WoB I will read today goes to this gem. Uruthiru could possibly have been soulcast if a bunch of Lightweavers/Elsecallers gathered to form it. Interesting idea! -
Honestly, I expect them to be the winged beasts that we are all familiar with but with some Sanderson trope-breaking flair. Sanderson puts the fan in fantasy so I would imagine he has a deep love of dragons. He constantly cites Anne McCaffrey as an influence and I am sure he is familiar with the DragonLance series. I sincerely hope they are winged, quadrupedal, fire breathing, shape-shifting dragons that, uh, have something unique haha.
