Geniuses Wanted- Well Read Sanderfans -with restrictions
Landis963 replied to 1stBondsmith's topic in Cosmere Discussion
More Shards than just Harmony will change hands by the time all is said and done. Dalinar will take the reins of Honor from the Stormfather, Vivenna will ascend to Endowment, and the Dor will be reforged into a new Shard, among others. -
Also, Hrathen made use of a certain potion brewer (name of Forten, IIRC) who he specifically noted was feigning his devotion to Jaddeth, but was too useful to really punish for lack of piety/loyalty. Since these potions did things like mimic the Shaod for exactly five days, that implies that Forten's potions were a magic system all their own. And since Hrathen can think of no one more loyal who might make these potions for him, that means that either Forten hasn't tried to teach it to others (small chance of that with Shu-Dereth superiors potentially breathing down his neck) or that his teachings have failed to take. Also, there's a WoB about spren-like entities congealing out of the Dor and Connecting to peoples of various nations, but I'm not certain how to find it and I need to get up early tomorrow.

We don't know. There's no indication in-story one way or the other (I assumed it was the silver was rapidly aging (i.e. tarnishing), but that's just how I pictured it).

Interesting. This implies that Hoid is unaware of the Shard currently encroaching on Scadrial's cosmic turf. If it is Odium, as I suspect, this means Hoid is unaware of his escape, while if it is not, this means Hoid is unaware of the new threat. Or I could be reading too much into it. -

Congratulations in advance, then, and best of luck! -
Heh, Poor Nazh.

Is there some place between the habitable zone and the sun where trees burst into flame without cloud cover but where humans would feasibly not? Or do we just chalk this one up to Vin's Shardic bullet time? EDIT: Another thing to consider: Scadrian World-of-Ash trees might have been designed so that they burst into flame far easier than humans do in the same ambient temperature, for several reasons including "They'll be easier to use as fuel" and "Ruin Alert!"

I was actually assuming that Silverlight was the so-called "Restaurant at the end of the Cosmere," except much larger than that moniker implied.

How does Hemalurgy work with Cybernetics? For example, if someone wanted to replace a missing arm with a synthetic replica (ignoring Investiture's known healing methods), could the electrodes that allowed one to control the arm double as spikes for anti-rejection purposes? (I'm basing this off the known property of spikes to become "invisible" to a Hemalurgic victim's physiology post-spiking)

In Soviet Cosmere, this joke is tired of you.

I wonder what all the clues might have been. Vin wasn't close enough to smell him, so it couldn't have been the cologne slip like he did in BoM (besides, if he'd been called on it in HoA, chances are he would have remembered that for BoM). She might have been burning bronze (always a good precaution in a mostly hostile city which may or may not have had an Allomantic population) so she could have picked up some weirdness that way. However, careful consideration leads me to recall that Hoid was disguised as a blind beggar who was whistling. Maybe he slipped on the blindness, as he did subtly with Kelsier and more blatantly with Wax later, but I suspect that if you are blind, homeless, and destitute in the World of Ash, you don't go around whistling a jaunty tune. That was probably the first tell, which led her to stop and assess, at which point she noticed the rest of the weirdness and Kelsier got a chance to warn her off.

I like this question, it has all the hallmarks of getting an answer that is ripe for dissection and overanalysis.

Wouldn't the increased mass speed up your trip down to earth? And how do you define "survive the fall?" And my concerns about how quickly a Feruchemist could actually store their weight, especially in circumstances such as freefall, are still valid.
-
Sadly, if a Shard was fully embedded in Threnody, we would see people casting spells in some way. As it is, all we see in SfS are the shades, which are ghosts of people.
-
First off, Lift's Surgebinding of choice is the surge of Abrasion. Second off, the not-parachute is predicated on the assumption that any Feruchemist, Full or otherwise, would be able to store speed quick enough to not cause injury. Considering that a major security features of Feruchemy is a cap on how quickly one can store, this seems unlikely.

I don't have either book close enough to check that, but regardless of that, it's still the spren which dictates what the fabrial can do.

It's in one of the annotations, IIRC.

I consider Roshar's focus to be the spren because everything magic on Roshar has to do with a spren. Stormfather (a spren) runs the highstorms, Knights Radiant bond with spren to gain their abilities, Voidbringers require a special spren to access their abilities, fabrials require a spren in order to work correctly. Unless you want to call a fabrial spren "bonded" to its gemstone, but still. (I also seem to recall a WoB that Roshar as it is now essentially predates H&C's arrival. However I can't look it up now because work and phone) (I'll see what I can find after I get home)

Ogden signing and young writers conference.

I think there's a thread for thus event already. -
I appreciate the heads-up, but a couple things. First off, you could have stayed silent and allowed me to mislead myself. I'm sure I could have been led in all sorts of fun directions until I finally hit on what actually happened. Second off, the Pits are iffy because Kelsier destroyed them not 12 months earlier (I'm actually unclear on the timing between TFE and HoA, but I know there's no chance in hell that 300 years passed between the two). So if Elsric did in fact leave Scadrial during the Catacendre, both of his possible exit points may as well be barred shut for all they are accessible.

As with many things on Scadrial, I feel like the medallions throw that for a loop. Now a company can have as many Pewterarms/Brutes as they have the budget for medallions, or rather they will have that capacity once the medallions' construction becomes practical. In the meantime, however, yeah, heavy lifters of both varieties, Bloodmakers (esp. in hazardous conditions), even Coinshots and Lurchers would be inordinately helpful.

Both the obvious perpendicularities we've seen (Sel's and Scadrial's) have been jacuzzi-sized. The Bright Sea is just too big by that metric (This was the major objection I had to the Lightbringer series being in the Cosmere, over in the "X is Cosmere" thread). However, your idea still has merit, especially if Edgli's shardpool is up in the mountains, and its waters flowed into the jungle basin where Hallandren is located.

I think Highstorms just lose a lot of their power (much like RL hurricanes) the longer they go over non-thermal-producing land. If a highstorm lasts long enough to actually circumnavigate Roshar's globe, then by Shinovar it would probably be not much more than a mundane thunderstorm. That said, it was a major point of the Fleet myth that the storm stopped when both it and Fleet hit Shinovar. In addition, Shinovar is secluded in a mountain range that would be the perfect place for any incoming storm to stop (in accordance with the rain shadow effect). TL;DR that's not confirmed.
