2016-09-06 Dark Talent Release Party - Salt Lake City
WeiryWriter replied to Ianricks58's topic in Events and Signings
Just split this off from the old thread so we can keep things to one event per thread. -
Hey there Sanderfans, we are officially less than a week a way from the release of The Dark Talent! Brandon will be doing two signings for it, a release party on September 6th in Salt Lake City, UT and a signing on September 10th in Springville, UT (check Brandon's Upcoming Events page for more information). Brandon is also currently at DragonCon in Atlanta, GA with quite a few signing events and panels. Not to mention The Missing Volume booth has early copies of The Dark Talent for sale! Check out Brandon's schedule here. In Arcanum Unbounded news, Gollancz has released the cover art for the UK edition of the anthology over on their blog. As with all the UK covers it was done by Sam Green. For those who are more of a fan of the US cover art Goodreads is currently holding a giveaway for the Tor books edition of Arcanum Unbounded that is running until September 30th, unfortunately this is only for the US and Canada though and does require a Goodreads account. Check the giveaway out here. Also in Goodreads news Brandon has announced that he intends to use his Goodreads account more, and that to start he will be posting reviews. He has posted his new Goodreads policy here, where he talks a little about how his reviews will work, such as pointing out aspects of the book that writing students should pay attention to. He's also posted his first review in this format, which is for Ghost Talkers, Mary Robinette Kowal's newest book. And last but certainly not least--seriously I, at least in my opinion, saved the best for last--we have an exciting new piece of artwork depicting Vin. Steve Argyle, an artist who has worked on Magic: The Gathering (AKA Brandon's favorite game), has truly done a phenomenal job of capturing Vin. He has a great post here showing it off as well as talking about the process that went into it and his relationship with Brandon. I for one think it is pretty amazing that, despite being primarily a digital artist, Steve took the time and effort to do this as an oil painting. It is currently for sale as 12x18in and 20x30in prints and as a 14x21in playmat.

I'm pretty sure Brandon is going to be there this year and I'm sure he would love to see this.

I would say that it isn't a matter of belief, the Beyond and the Spiritual Realm are distinct places, that is obvious from the text and Brandon's comments on the matter. As for that scene from BoM:

I don't think the fact that Returned have limited access to their memories (which aren't completely gone, they get glimpses of them from time to time as we see with Lightsong dreaming of his niece and her being familiar, and Lightsong does get at least some of his back in the moments before he heals Susebron) means that their "Cognitive self" isn't Returned as well. (And if anything it would go to the Beyond, not the Spiritual Realm). It's possible that part of the Returning process just places a block that prevents active remembrance of a individual's personal memories. It could be similar (though I'm not saying this is what I actually believe) to the Realmatic blockage that mistwraiths have.

I don't have it on hand but there is a WoB floating around somewhere that basically says one of the main differences between Lifeless and Returned is that Returned come back with something extra grafted onto their soul (i.e. the divine Breath), whereas Lifeless get entirely new souls. Edit: Scratch that I think I found the WoB and it is slightly different than what I was remembering:

It might be similar to healing. Anyone with Stormlight can heal themselves, but only those with Progression can heal others. It's possible that Transformation allows for a person to transition theirself but that Transportation allows them to bring others along.

It was always going to follow the mistborn. There was never an indication, that I saw at least, that the Terriswoman was anything more than an important npc.

It's not so much that the seasons are random but that they aren't really seasons in the way that we have seasons. There isn't something funky going on with the axial tilt, there just isn't one. So winter/summer don't actually mean "time when this hemisphere is tilted away/towards the sun" but "it's cold/hot outside".

It is.

I know when Brandon was asked about this he said that the traditional (i.e. mythological) thought is that a new highstorm is generated each time at the Origin but that the current prevailing model among modern scientists and thinkers is that there is a single storm that rounds the world. A possibility for scenario four is the simple: highstorms lose strength while over land and gain strength while over water (which is how hurricanes and tropical storms work, I think).

The answer is that the Flashback character is not always going to be a member of the Order that is being focused on. There was that pattern for WoK and WoR but it will not hold for every book. (And there is WoB on this, just don't have it on hand at the moment.)

I didn't do the bulk of the work building the timeline but I did fill in some gaps, but I did cite it and format it nicely for the Coppermind.

You might want to check the current list of ranks as some of those are already included.

When he originally instituted the Era nomenclature at the beginning of 2015 W&W was Era 2. He briefly tried to change it to Era 1.5 late during 2015 but has since reverted to calling it Era 2 since then (it is officially referred to as such during the Postscript to Mistborn: Secret History).
-
Incorrect. Wax & Wayne /are/ Era 2. What was originally the "second trilogy" is now Era 3, and the "third trilogy" is Era 4.
-
Yeah, this is something the Coppermind is planning on discussing during our next meeting (which, hopefully, should be next week). Basically we'll be trying to figure out the best way to incorporate that information (so if anyone has suggestions feel free to share them).
-
Only one of them is from Sel, and I'm pretty sure we have it confirmed they are members of the Seventeenth Shard.
-
Oh I'd definitely say it's not just a paranoid fantasy (though it might be concerning Nightblood itself) the add mentions "K and N", i.e. Khriss(who writes the Ars Arcana) and Nazh (who collects maps and stuff for her).
-
That is strictly because I needed something to call them when I was uploading those images, as such it is distinctly non-canon.

So the question of whether "Harmony" is one Shard or two is a complicated and there really isn't a definitive answer because it's a little of both. WoB is that if Sazed were to die he would drop a single Harmony, that Ruin and Preservation have co-mingled to an extent that the death of their Vessel would not be enough to separate them. That said Sazed still has to contend with two diametrically opposed Intents (which is why he has difficulty acting). Personally I describe Harmony as "two Shards that, in some ways, act as one". We know nothing about harmonium beyond it's existence and it's name (and the fact that Sazed didn't like the name sazedium but we won't get into that). As such we do not know if it is a pure metal, or an alloy of atium and lerasium. We do have WoB that alloys of atium and lerasium are complicated and take an understanding of Realmatics that normal people just don't have, so I wouldn't be surprised if harmonium is technically an alloy of atium and lerasium but that it only comes from Harmony so it is effectively it's own thing. I don't know if I would call him the 17th Shard. Yes it is A Shard (for the same reason a king of two countries is still a king) but it is not one of The Shards, there are only 16 of those. Those 16 have since been broken in some cases and combined in others but I've always thought of "The 16 Shards of Adonalsium" as less of a description of the current state of the cosmere and more a reference to the fact that "When Adonalsium Shattered, it was into these 16 pieces". There is also the fact that there is an in-cosmere group named the Seventeenth Shard and I doubt they would want to go and change their name. As for whether harmonium would make someone a Seer. Maybe? I personally don't think so though. I see harmonium as a 50/50 atium lerasium mix that would grant Feruchemy in some way (I lean more towards burning it than tapping it but both theories exist). I think a Seer would more likely be created by an alloy with more lerasium and less atium.
