True, but Ruin didn't have any direct personal Connection to Vin. I suspect that with that combination, of the damage to Spook's soul, and Kelsier's Connection to him (and perhaps also the fact that he started speaking to Spook immediately after he pulled out the spike?) was what did the trick. jW

I suspect that's how Nightblood was created, and I know others do too; would be interesting to get confirmation if that's possible. jW

Not to mention that Spook had been spiked, and I suspect that damage doesn't just heal immediately when the spike is removed. jW

Which the weight issue alone makes incredibly difficult. Keeping Shaw was destroyed only because Vin used the mists, Duralumin, and was in the middle, so she couldn't be thrown backward. A tank wouldn't be moved by a Mistborn without tons of stored weight (literally). jW

I wonder if, instead of a spike giving him back his physical body, Kelsier instead found a way to copy some of what the Ire's sphere was able to do for the Connection to Preservation, and instead found a way to rebuild his Connection to the Physical Realm and/or his original body (though I don't know if that even quite existed then, I can't remember if TenSoon still has his bones, but the flesh would have been gone certainly since it was eaten by TenSoon when he first imitated Kelsier). The spikes then wouldn't need to be for Connection, but obviously he had at least the one spike for another reason, suspected to be for Steelsight in the case of the eye spike, but they could have been more for the purposes of letting him create the medallions in the first place. I could totally see Kelsier spiking a Nicrosil Ferring he didn't care about, or who he felt was evil, to take their power and make that possible. jW

Yeah, I think it's shown (though not outright stated) that a strong Connection between the Vessel and another person can let them speak to them, though it ends up being faint in the case of the two holders of Preservation we see (probably because Preservation's power seems to not work well for that). Vin was very strongly Connected to Elend (they not only loved each other very strongly, but were married, which would boost that Connection by the Cognitive bond they and everyone else perceive because of the marriage), and Kelsier was very connected to Spook, mostly because Spook idolized Kelsier so much, I suspect. jW

I wonder how well this could tie into the idea of the investiture being put into the planet like a spike or needle from the Spiritual realm, through the Cognitive and into the Physical. If you imagine a lens in the Cognitive focusing the Investiture into the Physical, would that end up pointing somehow at where the Shardpool ends up forming? That would explain very different locations for the Shardpools of two or more Shards on the same world potentially as well. Edit: That's from this thread: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/54097-thoughts-about-the-new-perpendicularity-wob/?p=433748 jW

Ah, gotcha. That might be true, but the skaa would be exceptionally ineffective fighters for the most part, so that advantage would be largely offset. TLR had some in the Luthadel guards, but the number of trained skaa soldiers is far below anything Roshar could field. jW

Considering how much the geography changed during Sazed's Ascension, I somehow doubt that would really be a meaningful graph, and I wonder if you could even figure out where those locations were, in fact. The overall point I'd be quite interested in as well, though. jW

I'm curious why you think that. It's been stated by WoB I believe that all the Stormlight causes Rosharans to have very few sicknesses. Why would you assume Scadrians would be hardier and more resistant than that?jW

Blasphemy. That's not where the song comes from originally. :-P I've been listening to 90's pop lately ("Bye Bye Bye", "I Want It That Way", etc). I'd say I'm in a nostalgic mood, but I actually didn't like it back then. Dunno. jW

I suspect some of the weirdness comes from whatever happened when Devotion and Dominion were shattered. We don't know when that happened exactly, but I believe there was something saying early Arelish people stumbled on the city, already built but uninhabited, as if it had been abandoned. Then it wasn't for another generation or two that the Shaod began taking them. That implies to me that someone had been able to harness it before to build Elantris, but were killed or driven off, probably during whatever lead to the shattering IMO.What if they were the first settlers in Threnody, fleeing there through the Cognitive? jW

I believe I recall that being a quarter of his troops. I doubt it was half, so even if I'm remembering wrong, I'd guess 1/3 to 1/4, so he would have had about 40K. jW

I wonder if that stark contrast wasn't part of why Brandon decided to write Kaladin that way. He'd already done the hero who was upbeat and joking when he shouldn't have been able to, now he's got the hero who barely knows how to smile, let alone joke. It's a great exercise in characters, and the fact that it fits so well in each of their stories means it's not a bad decision. jW

How are all these Worldhoppers Getting Around?
Jondesu replied to Magestar's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, that's what I've understood (traveling in the Cognitive realm is what's dangerous, not the process of entering or leaving. I suspect Hoid had either a way to protect himself or another method of worldhopping that didn't require risking that.Since most Shardic magic comes from the Spiritual realm instead of the Cognitive, I doubt they would be affected. It's possible there would be interference with some other magic systems though. jW -
Hoid did have to leave during one of them, and I had thought it was in order to go to Scadrial too, but I can't recall now if that was confirmed or not. jW

How are all these Worldhoppers Getting Around?
Jondesu replied to Magestar's topic in Cosmere Discussion
He's used both. He used the Pits until Kelsier destroyed them, then he used the Well. He knew where it was, he wasn't looking for it, according to Secret History. That was a change Brandon had to make. jW -

Thanks! On the bright side, insomnia means I'm getting a lot of grinding done in Asphalt racing. A side note: that's epic on the Apple TV. jW -
Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Jondesu replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
I just spent a while crying on the couch with my wife because I'm terrified about the possibilities with my health issues. I have absolutely no interest in trying to sleep now, and in my bad mood, I typed up a blog post and posted it without checking if I should dial it back. Oh well. If anyone's interested, it's at http://hairynerdchin.wordpress.com jW -
Actually, Roshar was created by Adolnasium (I believe that's basically stated in one of the Letters), but you're right of course about Honor and Cultivation being present. Cultivation is alive and well, with some thinking she may be the Nightwatcher, but remember that Shards wouldn't reside in a particular location on a planet. Honor, on the other hand, has not only been left without a Shardholder, as Tanavast was murdered by Rayse/Odium, but was then also Splintered. The Shard isn't just laying around, but it's power was somehow dispersed, split up. We don't know entirely how that works, but have another example with the Splintered Shards of Devotion and Dominion on Sel, in Elantris. jW

So why exactly is Nightblood so stupendously overpowered?
Jondesu replied to kroen's topic in Warbreaker
True. The color used for awakening comes from pigmentation, though, so I assume that's why the tenth heightening leaves them white instead of gray. jW
