  1. When this is the only thread you've seen today and "you have reached your quota of positive votes for the day"
  2. As far as I know, Kaymyth is right. The closest I've ever gotten to somebody actually calling me is using the voice call option for the Google Hangouts app, which is an optional download. Nobody ever uses that anyway. At least nobody in my social circles. It might be a good idea to run through the Google settings anyway to make sure that your privacy is as protected as you'd like it to be. I don't think they use your number for anything besides verification.
  3. Hm... I've never written anything substantial but there are lots of little scenes in my head. Lots of them have similar characters that I've tried to flesh out. For me, the visuals and names are so important. This sounds a little funny, but sometimes I go find the quality dress up games (like a bunch on dolldivine.com) and play around with the settings. As I go, I think of why they would wear that shirt or why their hair is in that style. That helps me get a fairly good handle on their personality. Then I go somewhere like nameberry.com and search via meaning or origin, and find a name I like. After that, it's a matter of letting them meet other characters (even ones in published books I like) and do their own thing in the universe that exists in my brain. There is one character who can see emotions, and they're pretty much a staple in the development for other characters. I play out a conversation, noting what they think of each other and how the character I'm testing feels as discerned by that guy. Then as whatever story pushes full steam ahead, sometimes I brainstorm interesting traits or mannerisms they could have, then possible backstory reasons for that trait. It works, mostly. There are a few really random bits of characters floating around in said universe and others that have changed so much there's more than one of them! Aaannnyway. I have to try very hard to get my characters to act and react like they should. It's not the best system but it works for me.
  4. My friend got BoM the day it came out but I'm THIRD in line! (Better than 30th like I am at the library but still) I'll probably get it by the end of the week, optimistically. And I thought waiting for the Heroes of Olympus was bad. This is three million times worse. And then The Lost Metal is slated to come out while said friend is away for two years so he won't get it so I won't get to read it! Aaarrgghh.
  5. Hello! I dunno how long you've lurked, but there is a Star Wars section somewhere in this maze of a forum. Don't ask me where it is. I found it once. Looks like you've read a bunch of the cosmere. Have you found the Coppermind wiki yet? It's got a lot of good information about cosmere-y stuff. You sound like you are an intelligent person. That's good. We always need more of those. Good luck surviving!
  6. It's been a month... and I got just a little bit done. The link in the topic post is the new one. (Unless you don't want to go all the way there, in which case: LINK) Changes I made: Timpani now only has four notes that I plan on using the whole time There is now Eb clarinet and Bb trumpet... those were the right ones, right? More filling in and supplementing the melody and chords in the brass Now you can see all the parts Changes I need to make: Longer (I plan on four parts, which I've got all planned out with vague ideas of what it will sound like) I feel like I need a motif. What would be the best little bit out of the parts I've got to do that? Does it move too fast? As in, from one melody to another? Are there too many parts? Am I being too ambitious with the instrumentation? I know that I've got most, if not all, of those to work with, but usually I write for smaller ensembles, so I'm having a bit of a difficult time figuring that all out. The next workshop is at the beginning of February, and hopefully there we'll get more information on what instruments we can use and the skill level of the orchestra. I have the hardest time transitioning and keeping it sound unified. Do you have any ideas on how I can do that with this particular piece? PDF but WAV audio was too big The_Great_Catacendre (2) PDF.pdf
  7. Wow, just got back from seeing it and ... wooowww It's everything I hoped would happen but nothing like I expected, either. Do I love it or do I hate it? Either way, getting out made me so much more excited about the Star Wars universe than I was going in. If I had money, I'd be planning a costume or two right now... or at least doing it realistically.
  8. I'd probably save Elantris for later, after you're fully hooked on Sanderson. While it is very good, it's got some issues (mostly with pacing) and so it's hard to get through. Warbreaker would probably help with understanding the significance of some events in WoR, as well as being an interesting story on its own. Mistborn has a bunch of cosmere stuff in it, as has already been said. It's not necessary to read the first trilogy then AoL and the second trilogy right off. They're separate and the second trilogy, or at least Alloy of Law, is lighter. Bands of Mourning, out in January, promises to be cosmere-heavy, too, though, so... There are also a bunch of cosmere short stories, like Sixth of the Dusk and Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell. They're nice little bite-size pieces if you can find them. My friend says to do Elantris then Mistborn (era 1, the first trilogy) then Warbreaker, then the rest of Mistborn. In the meantime... the Reckoners series is great, the Rithmatist is a little more juvenile but really awesome, and the Alcatraz books (the last of which is coming out June 2016) are hilarious. I'm going to check those out as audiobooks and listen to them on the way to Disneyland next time I go with my family. Good luck! This is treacherous terrain. You might lose your soul forever in the dark abyss of Sanderson.
  9. Thanks for that information! Those range charts, especially, will be very helpful. I agree on the bass and cello - what I've got there is a little boring to play. (also - viola! Yay!) I'll see if I can find some way to make it more interesting, maybe changing the notes or rhythm a bit. I do want it to mostly be what it is though, so not a lot of change is coming to that. Maybe occasional accents where it makes sense. I have no idea how timpani works, so... I'll work on making that easier to play. How would you propose I do that? Should I increase interval size? And regarding layout, I just thought it would be easiest to write it the way it makes sense for me and rearrange the instruments later, which is really easy in Musescore, if you haven't used it. The last day in the workshop is going to be printing and binding, so I'll hopefully get all that info there. Thank you very much! I have no experience actually writing pieces to be played. Usually I make them fun to listen to and completely impossible. Your help is very much appreciated.
  10. That's really fun. I never really thought that you could muck up killing an Inquisitor, but Kelsier once again proves me wrong. I'm sure that if I were suddenly, randomly mistborn, I'd probably be tripping all over my mistcloak if I could find one. It would be a disaster! Thanks for that!
  11. I welcome critique! It helps and I don't feel like it's attacking me at all. General Everything else Thank you very much for your help! I'll change those few things when I've got time (finals week is upon us!) and update it soon.
  12. I'm going to an infrequent workshop for composers, and at the end, a symphony will read and record a bunch of scores written by the workshop attendees. I finally got some inspiration! The Great Catacendre, or more specifically, the Final Ascension, the one that happens in HoA. I have (for the first time) have started hearing my score in my head as I want it, though it changes quite frequently. The problem is, I don't know how to write for brass or most percussion or harp or woodwinds, besides flute. I also have limited skill when it comes to details and instrumentation. I'm really bad at that. You can hear the music HERE on Musescore. You can't really see all of the parts, and of course it is incomplete, but you download the file for midi or Musescore and see the whole thing. It should also be a bit slower than it's played on the website, more 100-110 bpm rather than 120. So please help! Feedback, suggestions, and advice, is very, very welcome. Edit: that link goes to the new version of the song rather than the old one, though there's not a lot of difference, really...
  13. I knew about the ending of the trilogy before I even started the Final Empire. Please press through! Mistborn is exemplary. And the ending is satisfying, though it sounds completely horrible out of context. Personally, I loved it after I finished, though I did cry a little. Mistborn is really worth reading, especially if you plan on getting into all that cosmere stuff, if you haven't already. Have you read any of Sanderson's other stuff? (They're great, too.)
  14. Quick question - does your body suffer consequences of your environment, even if you technically can't feel it? e.g if you're in a blizzard and tap heat, could you still get frostbite? Or does your skin literally get warmer and the frost melt away? There are lots of potential uses for storing/tapping ambient heat in this world, too, especially where I live. We've got really hot summers and really cold winters. Store all the extra heat during summer (especially in a car with no a/c), tap it during winter, never be uncomfortable. Wear shorts in a blizzard, or a sweater in summer. Go swimming in a pool full of snow! I've always wanted to do that! F-Brass would probably be best augmented by A-Pewter, though A-Steel is neat in almost any situation. (side note: I enjoy how Ranette uses A-Iron, and picture a lot of products specialized to specific types of metalborn in the future.) F-Brass and A-Zinc might be cool for somebody who camps a lot - tell emotional stories around a campfire. A-Chromium plus F-Copper: ace any test or debate or anything else that requires specific knowledge and luck. Become the world's greatest orator and take over the world if you want to. Or a thief. Either one. Personally, this (besides chromium/chromium) would be my preference.
  15. I don't know a whole ton about this, but I can take a stab at it. Warning: HoA spoilers. In the letter from Sazed to Spook at the end of the book, Sazed mentions that he spoke with Vin and Elend and they're fine right where they are. Wherever that is. Since Ati died (or whatever) the same way Vin did, I don't think that they'd go separate places. I think that Ati is in the cosmere's afterlife along with everybody else, though maybe something's weird in there about evil being punished, much the way many religions hold. So no, I don't think that Ati's mind or cognitive aspect is still influencing the world. IMPORTANT EDIT: I really should have read Moogle's WoB before I posted. Oops. Now I am left to wonder - Vin and Elend didn't pass on? Or were they traveling and Sazed got them? If they didn't end up passing on, then maybe Ati is still out there.
  16. Yeah, I know. I'm not saying it doesn't work, I just am of the opinion that Illustrator is more attuned to creating art, though many people might understand PS a little bit better. All these products... Just make one!! (Just kidding. That might be even more confusing.)
  17. I'm gonna put a little bit in here: Photoshop isn't for creating art! Illustrator is! Photoshop edits photos! (I'm done.) If you're trying people, the trick that helps me the most is this: get the skeleton down. Not the little ball-joint-and-line things, but real skeletons with skulls and rib cages, though maybe not incredibly detailed. Get the proportions right - that will help a lot in getting people to look like people. Arms have a tendency of being the wrong length, especially when they're drawn at angles. Heads are often too big and shoulders not wide enough. There are differences in genders and body types, too. A skinny male will still have more shoulder than a skinny female, an athletic girl will usually have less hip than other girls, and a short and stocky boy has a shorter torso than a taller boy. Once I figured out the proportions, everything else just kinda worked for me. Except for eyes - those have always been strange. I also have a harder time varying faces. I have certain facial features that I know work, and it's hard to get away from that. Make a lot of art, even if it's not good to you. Most of my stuff I despise for one reason or another, but people like the pieces. The more you practice getting people from your head to a paper, although the paper version doesn't quite work, the better you'll be at it when it all finally does work. I dunno... did I help at all? I admit that I'm not all that great at this, but I've realized that sometimes bad advice is better than no advice.
  18. What are kandras' (? plural possessive) abilities regarding to insects? Can they shed muscle at will as well as gain it from a corpse? How about... Jellyfish? Worms? Corals? Butterflies? I assume that there are some things that kandra cannot make that aren't specified, like bones and hair are. However, they can move muscle to become skin. I get that all they do is move muscle, but could, perhaps, a kandra make butterfly wings out of muscle? Somehow? There are lots of weird animals out there that don't exactly fit the normal kandra formula of "me + bones + hair = person".
  19. Sort of... Though OreSeur does do that, TenSoon does, too, in HoA, and that's the occasion I was thinking of. I could definitely see that. It does seem like it would require a kandra who has lots of skill, though. Would it be possible for a kandra to make a human with modified lungs to breathe underwater? Could they make a mermaid? ... That's assuming they could take different parts of skeletons and mesh the muscles together just right. That might be difficult. *announcer gesturing to the aquarium* "And here, we have a shark! Wait, now it's an octopus. ... And now a manta ray. MeLaan, cut that out!"
  20. Haha! Found a relevant WoB! ... that's also a spoiler for WoA and HoA ... ... So was Hoid only on Scadrial for that bead? How did he get involved in events, besides being an informant? What would he have said if Vin had gone down to talk to him? Would the book have ended differently? I guess Vin could sense that metal because of its powerful connection to Preservation, and it was likely very different from what she was used to, and maybe Ruin influenced her subconscious a little to make her averse to the weird patterns.
  21. I'm thinking cartilage yes - because don't kandra True Bodies have ears and noses and joint padding stuff? Also, when (spoiler for Mistborn) he has ears and a nose, though not hair. However, I'm not sure about the plausibility of switching to sea creatures just whenever. I think that digesting an actual corpse gives kandra a sense for how it's built, and it would be very difficult to remember the whole structure of very many animals. In addition, many kandras seem to have an opposition to mimicking animals rather than humans, so... I don't know if they would be very up for that. Even TenSoon was a little against it at first. Maybe a worldhopping kandra on Roshar's coast would find that skill more useful. On another note... Why doesn't a kandra just use one skeleton and only switch out skulls for when they wanted a different face? I get that different body types have different skeletons, but wouldn't it be easier and more convenient to only switch out a few bones at a time rather than whole skeletons, especially in AoL era? And are faces purely determined by skull structure, or is there more muscle and skin than I'm thinking?
  22. It's not a coincidence, not really. I was drawing a Shardbearer and realized that the only highprincedom whose colors and symbol I knew off the top of my head was the Kholin one. So he's definitely Kholin.
  23. So does bronze detect any kind of investiture, or only allomancy? As far as I know, Hoid didn't have allomancy at this point.. if he does at all. Being able to detect any investiture sounds like it might have cosmere-wide applications. I think that, in this instance, Vin's uneasiness was credited only to her innate instincts, the same ones that helped her know how to burn metals without being taught. There might have been something about her father being an important obligator, too. Are their genetics any different from other nobles? Maybe obligators were surreptitiously bred by TLR to have an instinctual understanding of allomancy, and perhaps feruchemy, so that any Inquisitors made from them would be inherently more efficient.
  24. Okay, you're awesome. Can I join, too? I do music... and drawing. (with a free app, cheap phone, and cheap stylus, but still...) Shai (though I have no idea what that hand is doing) Siri - she who had ombre hair before it was cool (and slight spoiler if you haven't read the book) Random Little Shardbearer I went shooting and took a picture. Instant AoL fanart.
  25. Photography is art too. Especially when you run it through filters to make it look cool.
