That’s an interesting point about her not burning off the alcohol the second time. Not that I have any concerns at all about her becoming an alcoholic I think she was just doing it to play the part. That’s just it though if she’s just playing the part why wouldn’t she burn off the alcohol when she’s leaving? Because Veil wouldn’t. Shallan became one of my favorite Stormlight characters after WoR (sorry guys I know he’s a favorite but Kaladin is just meh for me). I’m even more intrigued with her from what we’ve seen so far. I know it’s probably unpopular for her to turn dark but I’m thinking I would kinda dig it as it’s not what’s expected.

Only thing better than that would be for a certain person to "trade" for it. Maybe a nice leaf or bottle cork.

I feel like it is going to come up missing before he has a chance to give it to anyone. Too much talk about how well it was hidden and for Stormfather cant watch over it.

This really isn’t on topic but this post made me think about it. We are seeing Shallan as a Shallash in the making. Shallash destroys the statues/art of herself because she’s adopted one of her illusions as her persona and the depicted ones are not honest.

That only explains one half though right? As far as we know Lift still has her curse (damage). Or are we not considering all curses to be "damage". Of course again I’m not sold on forgetting his wife being Dalinar’s curse. I can see it as both a boon or a curse depending on what he asked for and the circumstances of her death. I’m also having a hard time wrapping my head around just one or the other being “healed” and not both. As a side note I’m going to be deeply disappointed if we do not get to see Dalinar’s Nighwatcher visit in his flashback.

Just that she has visited the Nightwatcher as well and uses stormlight so if it is as simple as Dalinar using stormlight then the same should be said for Lift. Which then raises the question has Dalinar's boon and curse been lifted or just one? We really do not know if forgetting his wife's name is a boon or a curse.

This was my first reaction as well but then how do we explain Lift.

I do agree it’s a little frustrating the murder seems like it’s taken a back seat especially considering how dramatic that moment was at the end of WoR. I think after all these years it’s just a little anticlimactic that no one seems to have a sense of eurgency about it. Of course we are also seeing the story from the POV of a bunch of people that let’s be honest have little reason to care that Sadeas is dead. Dalinar seems to care the most and Sadeas tried to see him dead. They also have a few other things going on. Then you add the copycat murder that makes his death look more like a serial killer than a targeted attack by one of his foes (really wondering where Brandon is going with this btw). I do get the frustration though. As said above though we really just getting things going and Brandon has earned my bennifit of the doubt to blow me away with the resolution. One way or another I have confidence it’s not just going to go away.

Hmm so what we are all trying to figure out here is if the preview chapters are our boon or curse...

I'm feeling the same way. I see her heading down a pretty dark path and I kinda like it. This also struck me as interesting, “Veil is just a face.” No. Veil was a woman who didn’t giggle when she got drunk, or whine, fanning her mouth when the drink was too hard for her. She never acted like a silly teenager. Veil hadn’t been sheltered, practically locked away, until she went crazy and murdered her own family. Since last chapters we see her using the illusions as a coping mechanism but this seems more extreme almost split personality.

Had to wait until lunch to read and I am already 6 pages behind! Wow how was Dalinar healed from using the lashing? We finally know her name! Syl confirms the Listners have a spren and it is a void spren? Need to re-read that part and the previous comments. Shallan's personality escaping is concerning. Another copy cat. This changes what I think of the previous one completely.

Oathbringer preview chapters 16-18 eve is such a magical time.

I’ve just always pictured him and Peter in a room and Peter saying “Hey you got to hear this crackpot theory they have on the Shard” and getting a good laugh. I can see though why he wouldn’t it would be hard sometimes not wanting to pander to the fans and I can’t see how it wouldn’t influence you to an extent.

I’m sure it’s already been asked but if I had the opportunity to ask Brandon one question it would be “Have any of the crazy theories on 17th Shard altered what you wrote in a book either by addition or omission.”
