The Nature Of Adonalsium (And Of Hoid)
Blaze1616 replied to littlemag126's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Actually, they are not. At least the way that Brandon and the fandom regard the issue, they are identical. For example: The being that serves as the antagonist of the Mistborn Era 1 series is called Ruin. That is it's name. But in reality Ruin is really just the Shard of Adonalsium, and the person actually holding the Shard is named Ati. Yet we still call the character Ruin. Same goes for Preservation (Leras), Endowment (unknown), Odium (Rayse), Honor (Tanavast), etc. So when someone holds a Shard, they are the Shard. Tanavast is Honor, just as Ati is Ruin, and Sazed is Harmony. So when the questioner asked "Is Hoid any of the Shards of Adonalsium?" whether they meant it in such a way or not, they were really asking if Hoid has a Shard in his possession. Brandon answered the question flat out with no obfuscation. -
Brandon Tweaking Words Of Radiance

Jokes on us. Brandon altered the final confrontation simply because he knew we'd pay more attention to that than the dress. Turns out the dress is the most Realmatically important object in the Cosmere. -
You also have to remember that each metal has an inherent property of burning speed. Given equal sized flakes of three different metals, each will burn for a different length of time, and that is why atium is the fastest burning, given my understanding of the novels. Increasing the surface area of an atium bead by cutting notches into it might make it burn even faster, or might have no effect on the rate at all.
-
It's an interesting idea, and whether it works or not comes down to one simple question: How important is surface area to the burning of metals? The flake method involves very high amounts of surface area in comparison to a pill. This could cause a decrease in allomantic efficiency due to there being less metal to burn at a given moment. Surface area does not matter in Feruchemy, but that being a different magic system could mean different rules.

Well, when you consider that the series features relatively few time skips (and the ones it does feature are rather short), it makes sense that the majority of blades we see will be deadblades rather than sprenblades. When the Radiants killed their spren, their numbers were massive. Our current list of Radiants-to-be totals around 7 to 10, depending on whether I'm forgetting some or not. Though there are sure to be others like Lift who are not (currently) central to the story yet are developing a bond, the reluctance of the spren species to rekindle the bonds with humans implies very few Radiants are coming until humans prove themselves trustworthy again. As such, the number of deadblade users on Roshar should be quite greater than the number of sprenblade users for a fairly long time to come. Given the amount of Radiants central to this story, though, we will likely be seeing a larger number of sprenblades due the concentration of them. I doubt the ratio within the novels is accurate beyond the central conflict.

Interesting. I always had headcanon that Forgers were special, which is why they were prejudiced against. As a minority that causes you to guess whether you're being lied to or not at all times, Forgers would likely be prejudiced against, and so I figured they were a select group of people because why willingly join such a group if you don't have to?

My counter to this is that Vin couldn't use the other metals because she lacked the knowledge they existed, not because she didn't think she could use them. To explain much better, A Pewter Misting knows the other metals exist. They know about Tin, Zinc, Brass, Bronze, Steel, etc. Vin had zero knowledge on the existence of Allomantic abilities with Nicrosil, Cadmium, Bendalloy, etc. In the same way that Szeth had to wait 10 seconds to draw his Honorblade simply because he himself believed he had to, Vin didn't, and likely couldn't, create those effects because she didn't believe she could. A Misting, on the other hand, knows other metals and their allomantic effects exist, so I don't agree that that is a safe inference, because the situations are wildly different. I may have missed something, but is this true? Anyone from MaiPon can Forge, and those known as Forgers are simply people who devoted time to study the skillset?

I'm stoked. I'm hoping Nazh does a good job of collecting magic info, particularly tidbits we didn't know before. Though the Aon list at the back of my current copy of Elantris is nice, it's nothing like an Ars Arcanum. I'm also looking forward to Nazh complain about how dangerous it was to get to Sel, assuming he uses the Cognitive Realm to hop.

MLP has two things going against it. First is, like Hale's essay points out, MLP has always been percieved as a girl thing, and so boys liking it is "funny" and something to harass/joke about. Second is that the show is seen as a kids' show. As such, adults who enjoy it are also subject to harassment/jokes. So, as adult males who enjoy the show, we're walking targets. Doesn't stop me from wearing my Brony bracelet though. Hopefully your husband isn't discouraged either. That's what really breaks my heart with this situation. Self-confidence becomes more rare as children age. The school's decision to not include boys reinforces the idea that those books are "meant" for girls, which only hurts the self-confidence of any boy who may have wanted to read them (or may have already read them). It's a shame.

I'll keep my eye on it then. Thank you sir!

Will the old ebooks be changed via an update? -
Although this is very frustrating, and I agree that it is a terrible shame that the boy at the end felt the so embarassed, as a very feminine boy, I understand the kid's feelings. It's not just adults, the ones who know better, the ones who shouldn't be doing this, that cause the problem. It's also that boy's peers. I was teased mercilessly for being quite feminine when I was younger. It wasn't until Junior High that my feminine interests were okay because all my friends were female, and not until High School that I finally found a group of friends who were awesome enough to not care (and also be feminine themselves). So don't just blame the adults. Though they aren't helping the problem, them acting in a much more accepting manner wouldn't solve the problem either. I also want to point out the slippery slope argument that Ms. Hale used. She referred to the behavior as "rape culture." When I read that, it felt like a slap to the face. I felt it came from left field. Though I agree that excluding the boys, and treating books as "girl books" and "boy books" is wrong, prejudiced, and can harness prejudice beliefs in our youth, I wouldn't say it is "rape culture." Nothing about that situation communicates that girl's feelings don't matter. It just perpetuates the ideology that men are better. I'm still reeling from the claim of "rape culture"...

Although this is a great alternate scene, I'm going to be that guy and tell you that what you've quoted is not Vader's line... To contribute to the topic at hand though, Changing the "fabrial" to "Surgebinding" makes the scene more confusing if Nalan still used a Regrowth fabrial. -

Ah. That explains it. Thanks. -
The answer to this should be yes, because Odium has "invested" a portion of himself on Roshar, according to Brandon. That said, I do not think the concept of combinations of cultivation, honor, and odium make the 10 orders because I do not think Odium is involved. Quotes from the book imply he isn't, anyways, such as when Syl refers to the Everstorm: This implies Syl has no relation to Odium (and does imply relations to Cultivation).

Though I am happy with the changes made, particularly because now we don't know exactly if Szeth truly died or not (and therefore brandon doesn't revive 2 dead characters in the same book), and Kaladin killing Szeth had always bothered me, I'm a little upset. I was looking forward to Kaladin having to deal with the fact that he slaughtered Szeth in a fit of rage. Now he didn't... Edit: Also, why the two changes of "Stormfather" to "Rider of the Storms?" Is Brandon specifically wanting to distance the Stormfather from spren? This also solidifies Kaladin's vision as taking place from the Stormfather's perspective, at least to me... -
Words cannot express how sad this makes me.

Will the hardcovers be available for those who cannot make it to any conventions? I purchased Dangerous Women, but having the hardcover of this would still be amazing!
-
Given the shape changes, I don't think it's simply invested metal. Nightblood is invested metal, but it cannot change shape. It would be interesting if it did turn out to be a spren, though. Were there Knights who willingly kept their spren at the gates to act as locks? Or are these spren "self-sacrificing" themselves for the sake of convinience?
-
So then here's my question. If the Dor is not a gaseous investiture, but it in reality the power of creation itself, why are Elantrians the only beings in the Cosmere to have direct connection to it? I understand Aon's or the same concept as metals, the movements in ChayShan, etc. but why would the power of creation permeate through Elantrians, and all of Elantris? One could argue it filters through the city because of the formation of Aon Rao, but that doesn't explain why it would filter through the Elantrians themselves. @Meg: Though I think everyone agrees that Investiture is a single thing, there are different forms of it, like matter. Everything is matter, yes? But matter comes in the form of elements, which can then form different molecules and compounds, etc. That's the best analogy I can think of at the moment...

The Worst That Could Happen Foundation

I was hoping to hear from Joe one last time in the event he had a counter-argument in favor of the airstrike. Other than that I think everyone else is pretty much in agreement with what you've detailed. I also want to note, while I have the chance, that I don't get online during weekends. So if you are waiting for my response come today around 9:30pm UTC, you won't be getting one until after the weekend. Good luck! -

Ah, okay. My apologies for misunderstanding you. Little Wilson's reply above sums up my arguments much better than I probably could. -

Though I agree that combat is a last resort, how else would you suggest we get said hostages? We've been told that even getting close to the barn will result in them killing those we send. If you've got other solutions please share them. I just don't see any way of acquiring a hostage of our own without storming the barn. -

Yes, and that is a possibility. I'm more worried about the flip side, though, where the airstrike demolishes them. A living captive is preferable over a dead one, in my mind. As such I worry the air strike might be overkill. As people have suggested, the airstrike will be available should the assault take a turn for the worst. I'll bet you I won't even be able to tell. Also, your "soon" made me think of this: -

Joe brought it up and Lindel's most recent post has him in agreement as well. I'd like to hear their arguments of air strike vs. ground assault before finalizing my vote.
