The Worst That Could Happen Foundation
Blaze1616 replied to Kobold King's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
All right, I'm actually in mailliw's camp with this one: I say we continue to prepare an assault team, but we should try to gain more intel before charging in. And I vote the assault team use the low-frequency sonar weapon if and when they do deploy. Also, Kobold, as an aside question, do you want us approaching this realistically, or from a "worst thing that could happen" perspective. Because what I would expect to happen from an assault versus what wil probably happen if it is worst-case scenario are two very different outcomes. -
Code Geass is my favorite Anime series (at a whopping two seasons!) Season two is far more impressive as a social commentary, in my mind, but season one was better as a whole.

The Worst That Could Happen Foundation

Also, because it is something that would be done, what info have we dug up on Kyle? Snowey native? How old is he? In addition, I presume our tapping of the phones didn't end with the phone call, unless the Chargers immediately confiscated and destroyed all the cell phones. With the next major update could you include any additional info obtained? -
The Worst That Could Happen Foundation
Blaze1616 replied to Kobold King's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
All right. I wasn't expecting significant progress, but just the lack of useable information is a boon as it implies stark differences between species. We know they are somehow instantly communicating with the hostages successfully. The boy's phone conversation involved interruptions by the Chargers, implying the instantaneous part. So there's also a translation device? Have they been to Earth before? Obviously we do not know, but if they have, they could have taken a few captives, trained them to speak their language, and brought them back to act as translators. That's wild speculation though, and the answer is more reasonable some sort of tech. -

I meant the next city. Sorry for not being more clear. -
Right. If that is in response to my comment about Breath being weird, I wasn't trying to imply it isn't gaseous investiture. Just that it is odd and has few similarities to the others. Edit: added it to the What We Know section. Thanks!

The Worst That Could Happen Foundation

Ahem. Exploding a nuke near the edge of the atmosphere's radius is the worst possible decision we could take. Due to wind currents and the natural spread of radiation and the particles and the like, detonating even one would cause catastrophic effects over large areas of the Earth. Or so I was told when having a debate similar to this in person. In space detonation is probably safe, but we'd be risking pre-mature detonation in doing so (whether malfunction or tampering is the cause). Kobold, how cooperative are non-US governments being with us? As this is occuring with Florida, I've assumed we've been playing the role of The Worst That Could Happen Foundation as a subsidiary of the U.S. government, but what about others? Russia? China? The EU? Or are we playing the part of a planet-wide organization in which all governments cooperate when it comes to non-terrestrial issues? Given what we've been told thus far, I have a feeling that this species is travelling using some form of warping. The elephants are in Snowey. There are no signs of ships, or travel of any kind to explain how they got there. In addition, the odd whirring noise from the phone tapping is suspect. Given that the whirring only occurs occaisionally, and is always followed by trumpetting and rumbles, I would bet it is a warp machine, and the rumbles and trumpets are the welcomes or good-byes of the species, as has been mentioned. This would mean evacuating Naples is pointless and a waste of our time and resources. They could easily appear in New York City, London, Hong Kong, etc. Another thing to note about the whirring is that who is to say it is a stationary machine? Given no signs of a ship dropping off the Elephants was mentioned, it is possible that the tech is a personal size, like a cell phone. the whirring could siply be the noise of the device working. As such, there might not be an obvious device being used for us to study. Also of note is that they are using a speech system similar to Earthly elephants. Kobold, have the elephant behaviorists/"translators" come up with anything of use or worth reporting? I am game for sending in a large team to rescue the hostages/take out the current Chargers. Lindel's idea of a low frequency sonar is excellent. Of course, executing such a task force would guarantee that the city they attack is to be obliterated. -
All righty, so I'm creating this thread to be a place to discuss gaseous investiture. This started due to a topic Moogle created regarding the Mists and metals in Allomancy, where he posed the following question: This led me to thinking about gaseous investiture as a whole, as each of the major magic systems in the Cosmere that we've been shown make some mention of it. So let me begin this by discussing what knowledge we currently have. What We Know Spoilered for length. I create this list above knowing full well that I may have made mistakes. I also ask that any observation you wish to be added to this list be accompanied by sources. I cited all of my observations that didn't come directly from the books, I'm pretty sure. I'm hoping this discussion can be mostly focused around textual evidence and WoB's, rather than baseless conjecture. Obviously baseless conjecture is allowed and often appreciated, though. Discussion I do hope this thread will involve discussion of all the forms of gaseous investiture, and not just one two, but Moogle originally wanted such a topic to discuss the Dor, so I will start this discussion there. My observations above all say that Elantrians are "holding" the Dor, but is it holding in the same sense that one can hold the Mists, or how one can hold Stormlight? I do think there is a difference. Such a difference would explain why Raoden feels like his old self upon completing the Shaod, rather than being filled with a torrential energy, such as Szeth and Vin observe. I do not, however, believe there is a way to "hold" more of the Dor than an Elantrian already does. Ignoring the fact that the Dor does not seem to occur naturally in the Physical Realm apart from leaking through Elantris and its denizens, if an Elantrian could intake more of the Dor, why has no one done it? As I noted, the Dor leaks from the city itself. Has no Elantrian taken a deep breath within their city? Or, if intent matters, are we to presume that there has never been an Elantrian to sigh in frustrastion, wishing they were more powerful? In a city such as Elantris, where they are so far advanced to possess a detailed library system, such a thing should have been documented. Of course, it is possible that Raoden's studying in the library never came across such a thing, and as a result we, as readers, have simply never been told about it. It could also be that the system is more selective, like the Mists, rather than not being selective, like Stormlight. We do not know much about such a thing, though that is my current position. As a final note, the description of holding "large" amounts of Breath comes from the prologue, and as such focuses on the abilities granted by the Heightenings. I can't currently search the entirety of the book to find other instances which might be more pertinent to the comparison at hand, but if someone could point me at least to a chapter to save myself time later it would be greatly appreciated.

I went MLS because no one really pays attention to it. Premiere League, Bundesliga, La Liga, etc. are all too easy. MLS is well known enough that someone other than me on this site can hopefully get it, but hard enough that everyone and their mother won't know it. On the flip side, if no one gets this, I'm done trying to make partially difficult ones. We might call it "winning" if no one answers, but someone answering correctly is more fun.

Thor. Eh, the more I think on it, the less I think this is right. I also had an urge to say Avengers, because Samuel L. Jackson makes one mean looking one-eyed man.

1. Hal Jordan, ace pilot 2. Elastigirl/Mrs. Incredible 3. Syndrome 4. Luke Skywalker 5. Han Solo Er, I'm not sure if you meant flying in general (yay for technology and engineering), or more personal flying mechanics such as the listed Syndrome... WLIU Name 10 cities and their respective team(s) that are a part of MLS (Major League Soccer).

Welcome. Have an upvote for loving metal.

See, to me it is white/gold. Even with the color adjustments people are making like in the gif Moogle linked to, the darker version still looks white/gold to me, but with a blue hue being laid over it to make the white seem blue and gold seem dark brown. Except for the photos of women actually wearing the dress, all I see is white/gold. *shrugs*

Considering Zahel was able to sense Syl, I'm lead to believe that the "lifesense" is actually "invest-sense". If that is the case, then yes, though of course that is just my conjecture. Considering Aluminum messes with all the systems, according to Brandon, I would say it is not Scadrial based. Scadrial is just the place where it is most noticeable due to the magic system being metal based.

101 Dalmations? Though that would include sisters too... Avengers.

"i Bind Things," A Realmatic Hypothesis
Blaze1616 replied to Shardcellist's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Nice, solid theory! I have one request; would someone do me a favor and explain the differences between the first half of this theory, about the Spiritual Ideals, and Kurkistan's form theory? From the sounds of it, you think they are different, Shardcellist? But to me they seem nearly identical...I assume I've misunderstood one of them.- 15 replies

I wouldn't worry about it. If the thread breaks the rules to a degree the mods think it needs to be taken out of commission, they'll close the thread, so no biggie. I would suggest reviewing the site rules here. The moderation pantheon here at the 17th Shard are cool people, so don't sweat it; if it was a big deal they'd let you know. Oh, and bump.

HUZZAH! Also, crap. Now I have to think of something...How about this. Category: Television Show A jock, nerd, gymnist, hip-hop dancer, and martial artist must come together to save the world.

Technically either movie fits the description, as the two were made to be parallels. Also, to try and answer your question, one movie that fits your description is Wanted, that one movie with Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, and the curvy bullets. Could also work for Matrix, I would think.

A bump is usually a post that only contains the word "bump," because by making said post you "bump" the thread back to the top of page 1 in the forum. Bump threads in other forums I've been a part of only exist to increase post count. That being said, I'm not sure if this thread in itself breaks forum rules. We have a topic for posting whatever you want, called Random Stuff, which would make this thread redundant. Also, this borders on Post Count Inflation, depending on how people treat it, though I'm not sure how heavily the mods police that.
