  1. I don't know anyone who actually believes that Thanksgiving is intended to celebrate the genocide of Native Americans. Merely they want people to realize that we've chosen to celebrate a day of thanks using a "mascot" scenario that was the genocide of Native Americans. You know, pilgrims and indians. Cool shaped yams and turkeys and squash. The classic Thanksgiving look. There was really no Thanks involved in that scenario. Not to be the major downer of the board, but China didn't particularly fare well against Europe either, they just managed to preserve their culture because of their ridiculously long and majorly impressive history. After all, it was Europe, or more specifically Britain, that tried to, and almost succeeded, in getting a vast majority of the population addicted to Opium, which they were the sole supplier of. In fact, two wars occured, called The Opium Wars, and the result was Britain gaining control of Hong Kong, which is why Hong Kong is far, far, far more westernized than the rest of China. The US tried something similar against Japan, though not through drugs if I recall correctly, and our education system doesn't bother teaching us about it unless we take the optional class of World History (at least, AP World History, which was optional for my school district). If there's a Chinese member on the forum please feel free to correct me or add details. As for the Middle East, I don't believe it was for a lack of trying, but rather Europe realized that there wasn't much in the Middle East worth fighting over. Or, at least at the time there wasn't, as oil wasn't in demand at all. Edit: Since you ninja'd me China developed much greater sailing capabilities prior to Europe's development of sailing, and, well, didn't do that. In fact, historians theorize China was first to land in the Americas, before even Mr. Erikson Erikpug. Not that I mean to take away from your point, though, as I believe you are correct. Though Europe committed some atrocities, were we to remove them from history, or force isolation on to them, much of our society today would not exist, possibly including our ability to even learn of the world's history.
  2. Mind-blowing. The entire two-parter was tremendous, though the ending did bother me somewhat, but it fit with the show's theme so it's fine.
  3. No. Sorry for being gone, holiday weekend and all. Hint: The man takes the mantle of villain to push his younger self to develop faster.
  4. Eobard traveled back in time to kill a young Barry before he became the Flash. Old Barry, however, moved Young Barry to safety, so Eobard killed Barry's mother instead. He then attempts to return to the future, only to learn that he has lost access to the Speed Force. Knowing that he needs a speedster with access to the Speed Force to return to his time, he replaces Dr. Wells with the goal to develop the particle accelerator 5 years early, so that he can return to the future sooner with the help of Barry.
  5. *splutters*
  6. The 3 days between Christ's death and resurrection. Well, Christ rises on the 3rd day, so yeah. 3 days.
  7. Yeah it never occurred to me either for the first five years they were around, until one day it was a "duh" moment. Their name gives them away in a weird, puzzle like way.
  8. You're thinking of Skrillex. Skillet is a heavier-rock Christian band, such as Three Days Grace and Flyleaf.
  9. It doesn't matter to me, I'm open to it if needed. Winter left Chase with the job to gather intel on Insight, like Blossom, so I can do it if you want the intel gathering to come purely from a source without prejudice (i.e. the player controlling Insight ). Just let me know.
  10. In general different school districts still offer the same number of days off (well, public schools), but the days that you actually get off differ. For example, having attended public school in both Oklahoma and Michigan, Oklahoma schools started three weeks earlier than Michigan schools, and went on summer break four weeks earlier, while Michigan schools got an extra week of mid-February called mid-winter break. In the end we had the same number of days, but which days during the year we got off differed.
  11. That's actually a very good guess, but no, it was not what I was thinking of...even if it fits extremely well... No to both.
  12. I got it after the Aerith hint, since I've never played FF7, and was scrolling expectantly for someone to get it. Oh well. Am I allowed to use major spoilers for something that's 7 years old? 'Cause it's a good-un... A man travels back in time to force his younger self to become something he wasn't. If not I'll post something else tomorrow.
  13. Final Fantasy 7. Apparently there aren't many gaming nerds here...
  14. One of my semesters for University, I was taking a class called Religion in Society. It was geared towards approaching religion from a sociology perspective, so we had to examine how various religions affected the societies they flourished in. The class was very much lecture oriented, and our entire grade was based around a single 20 page essay, due at the end of the term, about our chosen religion. I procrastinated until literally the night before it was due. Hadn't written a single word prior. Started writing at 7pm. Paper due at 9am. Finished writing at 7:30am Aced it. One of the proudest moments of my life. Would never do again though.
  15. Seriously, that's rusting fantastic! I love the juxtaposition.
  16. If Mailliw hasn't added you yet, I can if you'd like.
  17. Thanks for the help, Seonid and Kasimir. I really appreciate the patience. I'm not qualified, nor prepared, to make the appropriate arguments, though, so I suppose the discussion ends here, for me anyways. Thanks again!
  18. Thank you for the explanation, that really helps. But now we're at an impasse, because I'm trying to prove that morality isn't set in stone, but you're suggesting that my argument is flawed because I haven't provided a set in stone definition of morality.
  19. Rather than making an app, which is very difficult considering you have to make it compatible with not only Apple, but also all the different kinds of Android, they chose to make the website very mobile friendly.
  20. So you're suggesting that he must prove people found slavery to be perfectly moral, otherwise the example is invalid? I am confused, because I am failing to see the normative claim you're referencing. Whether or not I believe the people of the past to be correct in their moral decisions does not change the fact that their morals were what they were. Nor does it change the fact that the masses's change in views regarding slavery is an example of the moral code shifting and changing through time, and as such is a human creation. Now, I'm no philosopher, but looking into the is-ought fallacy that you've brought up, I'm failing to see how that applies. I'm not suggesting that because slavery used to be viewed as moral, we ought to believe it is or isn't moral. It's merely an example to the argument that morality is a human construct, and not some unchangeable absolute in the universe. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the is-ought fallacy, and if so further explanation would be appreciated.
  21. I think you've missed his point. Considering his argument is that morality is a human construct, all he's done is provide an example of a change in the masses's moral code. To take it a step farther, he could have used slavery, rather than homosexuality. Far more documented, and far easier to provide historical records proving that, historically, slavery was seen as moral, and now is not. Unless an opponent can prove that the rejection of slavery (or the acceptance of homosexuality) was not a result of a shift in morals, I don't see your point in dismissing the argument.
