Welcome! Which Cosmere book was your favorite?

I don't see why not. Spoilers for Stormlight Archive below: I'm not trying to say it's definitely not a Parshendi, but a lack of gemstones is really hard for me to look past. Edit: When we've never been told by anyone in SA that some Parshendi go without gems in their beards, I don't see why that would be a reasonable assumption. If it has been noted in SA, then sure, we could assume that, but until then no. Perhaps I've missed a mention, but I don't recall it ever being mentioned.

My thing is, glowing gemstones is kinda a big deal. I know that if I was witnessing some monster rise out of a lake, and it had glowing gemstones in its hair, I'd take note. To be able to describe the detail that the witness did, but not take note of glowing gemstones is just really, really weird.

Becuase threads that reach 100 pages become a slog to sift through. Say you knew a thread contained information you needed, but you couldn't remember where in the thread it was...and the thread is 200 pages long. Unless you happen to know specific phrases used that wouldn't appear elsewhere in the topic, you can't use the search function. If you want to see the mods actually discuss it, go look at the original Question thread, which hit 200 pages. I think the mods stepped in at the very end of the thread. If there's not a discussion there, you can always PM one of them, or TwiLyght as well.

I'm seeing a lot of people across the internet saying that they wish we had all the tech Back to the Future predicted we'd have. ...We have a lot of it. Hoverboards exist and have been used at skate parks Computers that exist in glasses is real, called Google Glass. 3-D movies totally exist Shoes that tie themselves are in development...Nike plans to give the first pair to Micheal J. Fox. Video Chat exists, and whereas Back to the Future used giant television screens, we have gone beyond the prediction and can video chat on tiny devices we hold in our hands called phones, and we can even do this away from home. Food hydration exists...just not quite to the extent that it does in the movie. Really the only major thing I can think of off the top of my head that doesn't exist is flying cars...and Jaws 19.

It's getting close to Halloween. That means it's time to bust out the creepy music. Nox Arcana here I come!

Well, Noble-blooded means that you have noble blood while not being a noble. Think of illegitimate children. There's a few of illegitimate children floating around the Cosmere.

Keep in mind that that is paraphrased, not verbatim, but yeah, I do recall him avoiding gender pronouns.

Note that the third WoB there says "certain people in the cosmere." I don't personally feel these are conflicting at all, and the Divine Breath is a splinter that simply isn't sapient. All that third quote means is that there are beings that are Realmatically aware, but don't understand the Returned on Nalthis yet. Plus, when looking at both Roshar and Sel, defining splinters as having self-awareness is completely reasonable. As Ari says, I was referring to the God Metals, which are solid investiture. Sorry for the confusion, I should have been more specific. I'm not speculating that there is an Endowment Splinter without a body somewhere, and whether one exists in the Cosmere really has no effect on this discussion. My point was that we don't know what would happen to a Divine Breath were it to not be endowed upon a dead body to make a Returned, and so we can't say for certain that Endowment Splinters are different from other Splinters. Spoilers for Elantris behind-the-scenes follow: Personally, I think that the Nalthis system is intentionally different, as in different by design. Endowment's Splinters weren't created by the Shard's destruction, but rather by a conscious, willing decision to splinter the power. These Splinters aren't allowed to form their own sentience because Endowment channels them into the Returned. Heck, it's very possible that the Nalthian magic fits with Realmatics perfectly, in that it represents the Shard used: The Knight Radiant system involves keeping to your oaths, a rather honorable thing to do, with breaking them coming at a cost of losing your Splinter; the Seons are incredibly loyal, very devoted, to their "bonded" human, and I'll leave my other Selish comment out since you've yet to read the new scene. So I'm not saying we shouldn't speculate because we don't have all of our data points yet, but rather that I think you're viewing the Nalthis data point incorrectly.

But remember that a power without sentience will develop its own sentience. So it's possible that an Endowment splinter, not given to make a Returned, would eventually gain sentience, and so I still don't think we know enough to definitively say they are different. As for the Jindo, remember that the Dula are half Arelish, and so it's very possible that the Dula can't use ChayShan, and considering the only true Jindo we meet is Shuden, and the fact that ChayShan only happens once in the novel, we really don't know the extent to which the Jindo can access the Dor. At least I don't recall Shuden commenting on it. And in regards to it being unique, we know each of the magics are regionally unique on Sel. Considering the vast differences they show in channeling the Dor, I wouldn't be surprised to learn they Initiate differently, but then I do think it's a bit of a stretch. My point stands though, we don't know enough about other magics to definitively state that Nalthian magic is an outlier.

Did you want someone to solve it? For z?

I'm not so sure about this. Returned are sentient. They are sentient because they inhabit a body that used to be alive, reviving it. We've never seen another world where the splinters are granted to previously alive sentient beings, and so saying that Returned are an exception to the rule is baseless for now. It could very well be that if the splinter that is a Seon were placed into a dead body, they'd revive as well. In addition, saying that the flowers are an exception seems wrong because what makes you assume that the Scadrian metals aren't the exception? We know through old WoBs that the investiture will take different forms on the different planets. While the metals are the solid form on Scadrial, perhaps the flowers are the solid form on Nalthis (I don't personally believe that, but my theory does not belong here). I guess what I'm trying to say is that we don't know if any of it is weird or not. Even the whole "everyone is Initiated" thing might not be unique. Given the Jindo people can channel the Dor by body movements, and we're never told anything about Shuden being special among his people, it's very possible that ChayShan can be practiced by all Jindoese.

Still Having a Bad Day? Exchange Your Rants For Hugs Here!

I understand completely. That slurping holds for all foods. Soup, apples, bananas, ice cream, chicken, suckers, rice, literally everything. Drives me insane. -

That's the reason that I can't stand the sound of someone slurping. My father slurps everything. And he's loud about it. I nearly lost it one day he was having soup on the couch, and it took him 30 minutes to finish it because he loves his soup hot. 30 minutes, with a slurp every 30 seconds. *shivers* -
As someone who adores the Sam Raimi movies, I also really liked the Amazing Spider-Man duology. Unfortunately, both Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suffered the same flaw, which was being forced by the big-wigs to shoe-horn too many villains in. At least The Amazing Spider-Man 2 handled it better than Spider-Man 3 did. Aside from how well the movie managed to portray the action and romance story lines, they actually had the stones to movie-fy the "snap heard around the world," which was the definitive end to the silver age of comics (though most believe the silver age had ended 3 years prior). For those curious, don't look that up until after you've seen the movie, if you care about spoilers. It actually makes me sad that Sony has given rights over to Disney, as I'd have really liked to see those Sinister Six movies.

Also make sure it's not a ticketed event. If it is a ticketed event, you're likely going to be required to purchase SoS to attend.

Once again you and I agree 100% on who best character is. I'm currently aboard the Sterax/Waxeris ship. As for Wayne, I currently agree with ScottLeft in that I hope he winds up with Shai. I mean, think about it, Wayne having a small case full of stamps just to be used on his hat, so that he doesn't need to trade for new ones. Of course, he'd still trade his clothing and personal belongings, but the image of him ducking behind a corner to stamp his hat is wonderful.

Intercosmere Webway Travel or a Hoax?
Blaze1616 replied to im_not_superman's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I cannot stress how highly I recommend you read the bonus scene in the Post Script of the Elantris 10th Anniversary Edition. -
To be fair, I have a feeling it's pronounced V-ah-x, like fox, but people asking are saying it more like Wax, and so Vax and Wax not only sound alike, but certain languages pronounce the letter W as the English V, and add in the whole Scadrial speaks a language more like French, and it's not so difficult a mistake to make. So it's quite possible he's not trying to be Cheeky. ...but then again, it is Brandon we're talking about...

Welcome! As a group I most often see us called Sanderfans, but those of us on the 17th Shard call ourselves Sharders. So then Sharders are a subset of Sanderfans.

Buttercup just stared at the ashes slowly falling onto the inside of the van's door. She had tried to grab the Epic, but he disintegrated before she could reach him. Hearing a soft whistle in the wind, she turned to see Rainmaker landing a few feet away, approaching. Buttercup side stepped away from the van so Rainmaker could peek in. "Since it's doubtful you've randomly acquired to power to disintegrate your foes," Rainmaker asked, "am I to believe that the epic driving this van has escaped you?" Buttercup shook her head. "No, this disintegration seems to be one of the Epic's powers. He turned to dust immediately after delivering a final message, said that Corvallis will run out of vanillas soon. I presume he means to see them all changed into those...things." Buttercup punched the van in frustration. "Him committing suicide like this means he likely has a means to regenerate. We should keep these ashes in case he needs them, specifically, for the regenerative process."
