  1. I recall a similar comment in Lansing. I would actually really like it if the Era 3 protag's powers didn't help her perform her role in any way. I'd really like to have a character be naturally skilled, and not have to defend that natural skill as not being magical.
  2. Not that it matters, because your simile was awesome, but the term tone was more in regards to muscle toning, and not the tone of skin. I will concede this point. I am not in total agreement with you, but that doesn't really matter. It's also occurred to me that we have gone completely off topic. Feel free to respond, but should I have something further to say I'll probably just PM you or maybe even create a new topic.
  3. Welcome! So I take it that SA is your favorite of his?
  4. Welcome! I get the sense you'll fit right in! Keep in mind that posting content about any unpublished works is against the rules. There is currently a White Sand PM group that allows White Sand discussion, though I don't know if one exists for the others or if that White Sand group just sort of expanded to all unpublished works. Either way, should you wish to discuss details of those works please PM the user Moogle. Also a friendly reminder to read the rules, particularly the spoiler policy.
  5. Welcome!
  6. Welcome! Hope you like it here!
  7. Yeah, and 5 or 6 seems to be the max you can get. They don't really mean anything, and I think are a means for mods to track post counts should they choose to instill forum rules that prevent people from posting a lot shortly after joining. Since 17th Shard doesn't have those rules, the dots are kind of pointless. And Welcome!
  8. Welcome! Looking at that list, I highly recommend Words of Radiance. Depending on where you poke around, not having read that could lead to many a spoiler.
  9. I did not know, and I like to think I do a decent job of keeping up with Indie films....oh well. And I never cared about Twilight, so no shock I didn't know of her there.
  10. Dakota Fanning was a child actress who not only was rather good, but had an explosion of movie releases at her peak. She has since flourished into a beatuiful woman, but she's stopped acting. Whether this is due to a personal decision, or no one hires her anymore, I don't know. She got some heavy Disney backing when she first hit the scene. Edit: I've been told she's still acting. Thanks ThirdGen!
  11. I think we all are *prays for more Steris*
  12. This one's a doozy. Spoilers are all for Stormlight and Reckoners (both Maxal's in the quotes and mine). You yearn for them because you love Adolin, because your initial exposure to him was not what I described. That's what I meant; I'm curious as to what your feelings toward him would be were your first exposure to him be his chapters all together, or if the story was told entirely through his PoV like Reckoners is through David. It's something we'll never know, though it's awesome you found a character you enjoy so much. As I said, I find it all very interesting, and am enjoying this discussion. I look forward to your response.
  13. Spoilers for Reckoners and Words of Radiance follow. Edit: Forgot to close spoiler. Whoops.
  14. He uses names of friends like that relatively frequently. If you notice, the party that Wax and Steris (and Wayne) attend is hosted by the ZoBell family. You'll find that name in the acknowledgments section too.
  15. I really enjoyed the episode, and Hulder's Boulder not breaking when it fell truly surprised me. Perhaps we're learning about dragon etymology in Equestria? Such as lack of incubation turning eggs into stone? *shrugs* I hope Marble becomes a more used minor character. She'd make a good friend for Fluttershy.
  16. I kind of disagree. If it is so crucial, why would she mention it in passing? She'd have no reason to. For example, if a book were to be written in which the setting were a community of Sikhs, I do not expect Sikh characters to comment on turbans. Perhaps if the PoV were a male, then they might comment on how they tie their turban before going out in public, but otherwise I don't expect them to say "Ah, look at all the turbans today! How fantastic!" That said, I'm not trying to be the stick in the mud here, merely trying to show that a lack of gems points to the thing not being a Parshendi.
  17. I'm not wanting to perpetuate the conversation here, nor join it, but I just wanted to note something interesting about Maxal's complaints about David. About half of them perfectly describe Adolin. I find it very interesting that context truly matters when it comes to liking or disliking a character. You wouldn't think this to be true, but I guess it's tough to mentally remove characters from their context and place them in a completely different one.
  18. I doubt this will come as a surprise, but I feel the original Mistborn trilogy, as a whole, is overrated, though if I had to narrow it down to one book it would be Hero of Ages. Of the three novels, only The Final Empire was on the level of most his other novels, for me. As for underrated, I'll list both Warbreaker and Reckoners. Warbreaker because, even though the members who list it as their favorite are rather vocal about it, the fandom as a whole seems to just look over it, not giving it a passing thought. As for Reckoners, I feel most people think "oh, it's just a superhero story. I get enough of those from movies." Considering the commentary on the human condition alone is superb, the series deserves more credit.
  19. Welcome! How did you like it?
  20. Welcome! You can track Brandon's progress at his website (a link can be found in this site's menu bar at the top, just beneath the logo). During his current tour, Brandon's been saying that Tor is giving him till June to finish for a November-December 2016 release. Any later than that and the release will probably get pushed into 2017. So if by June that bar doesn't reach 100%, expect it to be delayed.
  21. Welcome! You mention you're a writer, do you know about Brandon's podcast Writing Excuses? It's a fun little cast that doesn't eat up much time from your day (they're between 15-20 minutes each) and they talk all about the business of writing, from brainstorming to publishing. We've also got a small community of writers on the site that act as a writing group, called Reading Excuses. You should consider joining!
  22. Welcome! Which magic system has been your favorite so far?
  23. Welcome! I tried getting some of the folks at the Lansing signing to delurk, but they've yet to do so. Who's your favorite Cosmere character?
