Wow. That's quite a necro. Shalladin is Kaladin (Seems the most probable to me, with all of the parallels between them) Shadolin is Adolin (It could happen) Shallarin is Renarin (Feathwriter's pet project- not going to happen)

Long Game 12: Shadows of Elantris
Mckeedee123 replied to Herowannabe's topic in Sanderson Elimination
*Ahem* Some of us "minions" have feelings, you know... And some of us "minions" just like killing things with spikes. Including our own teammates (you should try it sometime. It's a rush... Claincy) And all that spiking turned me into an Inquisitor, so I'm *kind* of a big deal now. If I were in Original Wilson's shoes, I'd tread a little more carefully for fear of a little hemalurgic construct I like to call "Melend"- 1221 replies

This story resonated deeply with me. I've often wondered what it would be like to have a magic lamp (and wish myself infinite wishes) or an eternal lucid dream so that I could just completely recreate the universe to suit me. It's what we all are at our core: Spoiled, snotty little children that want to get our way. The world we live in, where we have to respect and make room for each other, is fundamentally opposed to this aspect of human nature (the confrontation with the pseudo-mobsters highlighted this.) I might have had some more deep stuff to say about it (this was a very deep book,) but it looks like this thread has already covered it all. My theory: Melhi's plot was to create a true rival. When Kai refused to battle for the valley, she saw something in that gesture that resonated with her own self-doubt. She constantly hacked his Perfect State to get him to pay attention to her. When he accepted the invitation to go on a date (making himself emotionally vulnerable,) she created a Machineborn that carried Melhi's own thoughts and feelings in order to "infect" Kai (think Inception) with thoughts to push his self-doubt over the edge. Her true revenge wasn't some sort of competition, it was about pulling Kai out of his complacency so that when he actually met Melhi, they could understand each other better (not that Melhi isn't super-competitive. She is, but she's sort of... acting out her frustrations on Kai in a way that's constructive for both of them.) I really want to see a sequel, where Kai gets to know the other brains (especially Melhi) better. Think of all the worldbuilding opportunities.

I'm more interested in Cosmere than Reckoners, but... most Cosmere questions really are just ridiculous technicalities. FTL, for example, is really just a big RAFO, in the literal sense of "Read and Find Out." I mean... why does it matter when it's not relevant whatsoever to the story at hand? And, of course, we apparently have to ask what every magical metal in existence would do when burnt. The interesting questions to me are the ones about Worldbuilding, because it's actually pretty impressive how in-depth it is. Where do Scadrians get silk? What's the diameter of the Final Empire? How many Mistborn are there on Scadrial just prior to the Collapse? It's what these signings are for. Not that I don't have my own list odd questions, I guess.

Oh, hey! You got rid of the fish, huh?

I feel the same way, actually. Kissing scenes are the part of the movie where just sort of roll my eyes and wait till they're over. To be fair, I saw the movie in a crowded theater, and so was forced to sit in the very front row, where the screen took up my entire field of vision and then some. Not exactly the optimal mode of viewing

Long Game 12: Shadows of Elantris

Mainem [May-aye-nm], an Elantris guard who is (mistakenly) confident in his fighting ability, is signing up. He is extremely contemptuous of people who do not use Aonic names.- 1221 replies

After actually seeing the movie... eh, it was ok. I can't say I hated it, but CGI really does make all combat look the same if it's used too much. The movie had too many characters, and not a whole lot of development. The best part of the original was that it was almost constant banter, something Whedon is pretty good at. The characters bounced off of each other and competed for space, letting them grow and develop relationships. Most of the characters were pretty static in this installment, because again, there were too many. Why is Dan Cheadle there? Why is the... the Falcon there? What does Captain America's presence do for the plot? The characters whose roles I liked were Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch, whatever their real/fake/whatever names were. Coincidentally, I realized afterwards that those were the characters that had arcs or new developments (Bruce/Natasha does not count. I thought that whole thing was kind of ridiculous, since the relationship totally just flies in from left field and does nothing for either character.) Stark totally needed an arc. Dude! He made Ultron. He needs to confront his arrogance! Does he? Nope. He flies in, lasers some robots, and flies out of this movie with exactly the same ego he came in with. Thor? Steve Rogers? Falcon? Nick? Natasha? Banner? Falcon? Dan Cheadle? Girl from How I Met Your Mother? Nope. They showed their faces and collected their paychecks and waited for Phase 3 to start. Doctor's diagnosis: Too many characters. Does Ultron have an arc? That might be the most important thing of all. I asked myself afterwards why he was an unsatisfying villain, and I just realized now that it's for the same reason as everything else. Villains don't necessarily need arcs (eg. The Dark Knight. The Joker has no "character arc,") but if they don't have one they need to compensate by being fascinating or mysterious somehow. Ultron is fascinating and mysterious for about 5 minutes and after that we know absolutely everything about him. He doesn't learn, grow, or change in any way. He's utterly disposable, even if he does command an army of thousands of murderous Iron Man suit robots. Again, can't say I hated it, but... I didn't like it.

Snoopy? Never heard of him. This man is obviously insane. Can someone get rid of him plz?

Eh... I loved Way of Kings all the way through. Best I can tell, though, people who read Mistborn first think that Stormlight Archives is too slow and has boring characters, whereas people who read Stormlight Archives first think that Mistborn characters (especially Vin) are kind of whiny and that there are too many character deaths. I'm one of the latter, but hey, I get it. Maybe this book hasn't blown your mind yet, but once you get to that climax, I'm sure you'll have at least a better opinion of the book.

Discrepancy in the Epigraphs from Mistborn (HOA spoilers)
Mckeedee123 replied to gjustice99's topic in Mistborn
Well, that actually sounds pretty much exactly like Sazed. The Synod basically hated him for being such a "loose cannon," but he gained the respect of the rest of the Terris people for what he did. -
Whats the connection of Earth and Roshar?
Mckeedee123 replied to FlatLine's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't know about that. Roshar's got some pretty unique crustaceans. Anyway, if you want a definitive reason, it's that most of the Cosmere is modeled after Yolen, which was(is?) apparently very Earth-like -
Whats the connection of Earth and Roshar?
Mckeedee123 replied to FlatLine's topic in Stormlight Archive
Someone pointed out, if I'm not mistaken, in the "Hidden things in the Map of Roshar" thread, that Shinovar doesn't actually belong in the 2-D Julia Set frame that the Roshar map is based on. I'm pretty sure that's a big hint that the continent of Shinovar wandered over from some other planet. Also, by the way, the reason why Shin people are described as "big-eyed" is that they don't have epicanthic folds like other Rosharians, which is further evidence that, yeah, they aren't really from around there at all. I've always sort of wondered if Shinovar is even spiritually connected to the rest of the planet, since spren don't seem to appear there. -
Nah, it's from a WOB that Stormlight and Feruchemical gold work by realigning your body to the cognitive ideal of yourself.

Mad Max... Any one of them?

Vasher is native to Nalthis, as evidenced by the fact that he died, and then Returned.
-
Yes, I actually thought of that one immediately after I posted. It doesn't necessarily negate Voidus' take on it, though, I suppose.
-
Oh, yeah, definitely. I was seriously surprised to see something that good on a TV show. That would even have impressed me if it were in a movie.
-
Nice try, but I know better than to believe that
-
Right... I get what you're saying. Can't argue with the two highest repped members of the forum, either. I'm just seeing all of this and it seems like strong foreshadowing (though I wouldn't put it past Brandon to just make a massive red herring to distract us from some world-shattering twist in Calamity.) There's a possibility that David got powers from Calamity's diametrically opposed Shard, though, whatever its intent is. The Epics it makes might work differently.
-
Well, to comment on the original topic... I honestly think that David has had Epic powers since the very beginning, and I'm thinking down the line of him being some sort of meta-epic, based on three main things: 1) He claims, in the very beginning of Steelheart, that he can recognize Epics just by looking at them. Everybody else claims it's impossible, but he picked out Deathpoint immediately after he entered the bank. Immediately. 2) He is unusually good with using the powers gifted to him from Prof. No, he's not as good with them as Prof is, but he catches on quickly, and can even use the tensors to shape things on his first try (not very well, but yeah.) Additionally, I'm pretty sure that both Megan and Prof commented in Firefight that it was easier to control themselves when he was around. 3) Steelheart's skeleton. After he died, his skeleton was turned to steel. David comments on this in the book, and dismisses it, saying that weird things happen around Epics. Still, it's conceivable that David was able to use his powers against him. Normally I wouldn't care about this, but the way it was dismissed bugs me.
