This ^ All of these characters feel rushed, things that they've become comfortable with are turning on their heads. We feel that in reading it. That's one of the things that I enjoy about Brandon's style as it's grown, when you read a character's POV, you can almost feel their state of mind. It's also important to note that the editing team sees a much bigger portion in a shorter amount of time. So getting spoon-fed a couple chapters at a time is a much different experience than just sitting with the book, and knowing the whole picture also makes a difference. And I assure you, when people dislike something, they speak up about it, quite freely. I would agree that day 1 is probably the weakest, but the book is overall amazing. This is just that weird catch 22 of getting some preview chapters.

This might be a hot take, but I think Neil Patrick Harris would make a great Hoid.

As a pagan and queer, I love what Brandon does. He portrays religion very well in my opinion. People use what knowledge they do have of divinity and use it to explain and regulate their interactions with the world around them. As readers we see more of the truth, but we can also see exactly why characters believe/do what they do. This is such a fresh take on religion in the fantasy genre. It seems to so often be axiomatic: A good benevolent God; an evil God that needs destroyed. Here we get to see into these divine being, who/what/why they are, and that lets us explore and understand these religions in a way that's nearly impossible within the human condition. Of course there's still stuff left unknown to us, and some of that (i.e. the God Beyond) that will never be revealed as it isn't important for the story telling purposes.

Spren in general seem to work this way. We see Spren in the physical world, but they are still primarily within Shadesmar; Radiant Spren notwithstanding. Though I think in this instance it would have to be the place where their consciousnesses is centered. I feel like their "presence" in these other places would primarily be ancillary, functional, but not necessarily present.

I think part of this could be attributed to some lack of context. How rare exactly are compasses of this sort within the Cosmere? They seem rare on Roshar. What if Roshar was unique in their development of such a device?
