Natural Fabrials: Symbiosis on Roshar
Blightsong replied to Blightsong's topic in Stormlight Archive
I would agree, but Hemallurgy works in similar ways. You can spike something into someone else, and while still having used the magic system, your spirit web hasn't been directly affected by it. Also, Brandon refers to it as a full magic system so that's what I'm basing the idea of it being one off of. Sure, go for it. -

That makes sense, thanks for clearing that up. I think it would be funny if Honor was in love with an apparent trickster.- 17 replies

Introduction In the Unified Theory of Roshar post started by Djarskublar there was some discussion of the origin of different magic systems on Roshar. This discussion gave me some thoughts on the origin of Fabrials, and my conclusion was this; Fabrials as a magic system have existed long before Honor and Cultivation arrived. Adonalsium and Roshar We know that Adonalsium created Roshar, Listeners, as well as Highstorms. Especially with his creation of Highstorms, it seems to me like he invested Roshar very heavily during his creation of it, and because Highstorms remained we can sure that it remained heavily invested after he left. This makes me believe that he must have manifested a magic system, and it seems very likely to me that that system uses Fabrials, a theory supported by the fact that he basicly shaped the life on Roshar to be living Fabrials. Life on Roshar All life on Roshar that utilize Spren to seem to have gemhearts and gain unnatural abilities from their symbiosis. They also seem to use investiture by going out in Highstorms to transform. This seems far beyond what we have seen on planets that don't have high levels of investiture (example being Threnody) or magic systems. This system of using gems to trap and gain powers from Spren is exactly like what we have seen from Fabrials science, and it has been going on way longer than Shards have even existed. Conclusion This idea on Fabrials makes a lot more sense to me than any other theories I've seen on it. It's Initiation isn't really in line any of the other shards, or any mixture of them. Let me know what you guys think.

But there is no hate between you and the Spren. You are not honoring anything. By this wording you could say that you are endowing the gem or dominating the Spren by trapping it. This is a bit off topic, so I'm gonna just let it drop.
-
Maybe fabrials are of Adonalsium. He seemed still pretty invested in Roshar (with Highstorms raging long before Honor and Cultivation arrived) when he was shattered. It just doesn't seem to me like fabrials have an Initiation process in line with the intents of any of the three shards involved.

I've been thinking on this and I am finding impossible to not have several theories on this of equal likely hood. The events of SH could have changed him so much, not to mention the bits of other people's souls he has stuck to himself. One of the biggest things in common through the my thoughts is that he is still on Scadrial. Brandon said that you could see his influence in Alloy of Law. I do expect that he has traveled though.

Theory: The Nightwatcher and Cultivation
Blightsong replied to Jondesu's topic in Stormlight Archive
Are you not suggesting that what the Nightwatcher is is the personality of the Vessel of Cultivation completely removed from the Intent of the shard? What I am saying is that we have not seen Vessel's have the ability to be completely separate from their shards influence. I am not saying that they can't retain parts of their personality, but that that personality isn't completely separate of the shards intent like you say but a mix of the personality and the shard's intent, with the Shards influence growing ever stronger over the personality. If you are saying that the Nightwatcher is just Cultivation showing and acting on its personality, I don't think that these actions are completely untouched by the shards influence, i doubt that is possible, but if you think that this is the case then the Vessel is still using the Shard's investiture to accomplish what it does, I don't see how this is different from Nightwatcher just being Cultivation, and we know that this isn't the case.- 17 replies

Theory: The Nightwatcher and Cultivation
Blightsong replied to Jondesu's topic in Stormlight Archive
Like I said, I doubt a vessel and its shards personality and intent wouldn't be a uniform mix, I just find it unlikely that it would be fragmented like you suggest, because we have seen nothing that indicates this.- 17 replies

Theory: The Nightwatcher and Cultivation
Blightsong replied to Jondesu's topic in Stormlight Archive
Huh the below is the most recent WoB I'd seen on this topic and Brandon apperently believed that he hadn't revealed this information, thanks for the WoB. INTERVIEW: Feb 16th, 2016 Calamity Release Party LITTLE WILSON You mentioned that "half-ish" of the existing Shards are whole at the time of Shadows of Self. Is that counting splinters? BRANDON SANDERSON No. Splintered is one of the ways they are not considered whole. (He's thinking about Dominion and Devotion and says that's the opposite of whole) LITTLE WILSON I was thinking about shattered versus splintered, and going with shattered with Devotion and Dominion. And then splintered would be Honor separating a piece of himself to create the spren (pre-Shattering). BRANDON SANDERSON On Scadrial, Ruin and Preservation did the same thing. Their bodies are part of the world. Things on the spiritual realm don't matter where they are in relation to each other. All those spren are still Honor, when he was alive. Does that make sense? Yes, they're splinters of Honor, but they're still Honor. It's not like he's diminished, because his whole essence is the world. There's no diminishing that. So we're talking about the fracturing of the mind and killing of the Shard. That's the distinction between whole and not whole. LITTLE WILSON Are there any Shards we don't know of that are Shattered? BRANDON SANDERSON Yes. (Zas' sister says "Four....ish...right?") Eh....Honor is gone. Devotion and Dominion are gone. There are others. The question is is Cultivation gone or not? I haven't answered that for you. There are others. So this is why I'm not going to give you answers on this. TAGS shards, splintered, Honor, Devotion, Dominion, Cultivation,- 17 replies

Theory: The Nightwatcher and Cultivation
Blightsong replied to Jondesu's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't think that we know for certain that Cultivation isn't dead. Yes, Wyndle talks about her like she is still around but Syl refers to the Stormfather in a similar manner. Why are you certain that Tanavast hadn't been consumed by Honor, we don't know what he was like before and can't know if he was completely changed. As for this being even possible- 17 replies

Magic systems aren't created by shards by breaking off a part of themselves, they are a natural outgrowth of a shard investing into a planet.
-
Yea, i would say fabrial instead of specifying it as Soulcasting. Brandon has said that Fabrials are the specific manifestation of investiture. Im also wary to say that Listener forms are of Honor, as Cultivation seems much more in line with their culture, and the process of changing forms in the forst place. I also think you are assuming too much about the original ability of the vessels of Honor and Cultivation. If they had enough knowledge of realmatics to be able to splinter Adonalsium then i have no doubt that they were pretty proficient with the power once they had it.

Welcome, it's always interesting to get new eyes on old theories and vice versa.

So why exactly is Nightblood so stupendously overpowered?
Blightsong replied to kroen's topic in Warbreaker
Bit of a dead post, but I would like to add that we have not seen all that Nightblood is capable of. Brandon has said that when he starts drawing huge amounts of investiture that he can do some "very freaky things". -
I also remember seeing what Maxal said on Reddit. I recommend going through Brandon's comments every month or two (he is u/Mistborn). It feels creepy but it's worth the sweet sweet Cosmere tid bits.

I seem to remember that one of the most recent signings included a Kalsdin PoV chapter from Oathbringer, but that Brandon asked that audio or a summary not be released so that it could be a suprise in a news letter or the next signing he was at. It might have been from Edgedancer or something but I remember it being from Kaladin's PoV, does anyone else remember this or have information on this reading? If Brandon still does not want it retold then respect his wishes.

Theory: The Recreance Weakened Cultivation

Quote from secret History This sheds some light on the Odium's process of splintering, and is in all likely-hood, said after Honor had been destroyed. -
theory [White Sand] Investiture: Focus, Manifestations, and Catalysts
Blightsong replied to Ari's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Extremely insteresting, Yata, that is one of the most interesting WoB I've seen in a while. I wonder if an Allomancer using breath to power Allomancy could gain the fine control over their power like what internal magics are capable of.- 20 replies

Theory: The Recreance Weakened Cultivation
Blightsong replied to ROSHtaFARian2.0's topic in Stormlight Archive
The main issue I see with this theory is that Honor was alive during the recreance, and Brandon has said that the recreance didn't directly affect the shattering, which it pretty would have had to do for this theory to be correct. Relevant WoB: INTERVIEW: Oct 12th, 2015 Shadows of Self-Oak Brook, IL QUESTION Was Honor Shattered before or after the Recreance? BRANDON SANDERSON I believe after. I'm pretty sure. I mean, he has memories of the Recreance. TAGS Honor, recreance, His hesitance to be 100% sure also makes me certain that the recreance as an event didn't greatly affect the shards themselves. If it had that big of an impact I'm pretty sure Brandon would have been entirely certain of when it happened in relation to the shattering. -
My theory has always been that Cusicesh is of Adonalsium in some way.
-
Sorry for the late reply, i took a bit of a break from obsessing over the Cosmere for a bit. One assumption you are making is that Shardblades are not much more invested than a human soul. They are VASTLY more invested. Take a look at Nightblood. Yes he is a lot more powerful then a regular shardblade, but it took a thousand 'souls' to create him. Another example that helps prove my point is Hemallurgic spikes. They damage the soul and are significantly less invested then shardblades. Edit: Fixed a number

Knights Radiant linked to Heralds
Blightsong replied to Assassin in Burgundy's topic in Stormlight Archive
I got confirmation that the oaths of the spren were not consciously chosen at the Oddesey Con signing. Me: Were the oaths of the Knights radiant consciously chosen, or did they happen naturally. Brandon: *apprehension*. This is one of those vague ones in that yes and no. They are a natural outgrowth of the spren, but the spren are a natural outgrowth of human's perception of natural forces, but the spren are sentient, so I would say it's a little more by instinct than not. For example to Knights Radiant in the same order might speak the words differently, but the concept is the same. You will see this happen in a future book, where a Windrunner will speak the oaths. It's a slightly different take on the same concept. Some are moreso, like Shallan's oaths are very individualized truths, so. -
I had a Sinar guess but this line blew my mind, take and upvote.
