Nahel bond - effects on spren and Surgebinder
Blightsong replied to Oversleep's question in Cosmere Q&A
I think that Radiants get closer to the cognitive realm as a result of the bond. My best evidence is when Kaladin is able to see the shadesmar sun while flying around in the chasms.- 11 replies

Why didn't Kaladin take the shard plate?
Blightsong replied to soulcastJam's topic in Stormlight Archive
I would also like to point out that Kaladin would really be able to fight with a spear effectively while in shard plate. -
Are Shardblades and Shardplate made of Honor's godmetal
Blightsong replied to Omniforce's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yea, like other people have been saying, I think that if something like a god metal would manifest as a Gemstone on Roshar, metals being the physical body of a shard seems local to Scadrial. -
Odium is Invested in the Very Stone
Blightsong replied to Child of Hodor's topic in Stormlight Archive
Part of investing in a planet is having the shards power permeate all things there, and we are certain he is invested on Braize so this hypothesis should be semi true there, but it isn't that he is invested in the stone, it's that he is invested in everything including the stone if that makes sense. As for the Spren coming out of the ground, I don't think this point is really relevant. There are Spren that aren't associated with negative emotions (Odium also doesn't encompass all negative emotions, just hate. There doesn't seem to be a correlation between Shardic Mandates and the types of Spren regardless) that still come from the ground. Think of Wyndle, who grows from the ground when following Lift. I would also like to point out that these Spren most likely sprout from the ground even when said ground isn't stone. Im pretty sure that in that scene Tanavast is referring to the destruction of Roshar, not the ground specifically being destroyed. Even if the ground was destroyed as seen in the vision we don't actually know if this would separate the investiture from the molecules that make up the stone. This theory was well put together, I like the quotes and examples. -
I think her family being happy is literally the most important thing to her. She said as much to Hoid at the fair. Her dream was for her family to be happy, like it was before her mother's death, if this wasn't even the case I could see how it could crush her. But why would Pattern go to her BEFORE she had anything happen to her, I believe it's because of the above, her lying to herself about the state of her family. But she isn't lying to herself at all about Heleran. When she learns that Amaram "killed" Heleran she acknowledged that it was most likely self defense (indicating that she knows Heleran was in the wrong) but that she still hated Amaram on the principle of him having killed her brother. I just feel like there is nothing really there. I also think that her last truth should be about her past because she apperently still has stuff to face about it. Brandon has confirmed that she had stuff to deal with when Pattern first bonded her, so I don't understand why that would be left alone for current events, which haven't created deep seated lies within her so far as we have seen. More evidence that she isn't doing this is that when she started too, when Jasnah died and she lost her drawings, Pattern specifically warns her away from it (I actually think that it would damage her bond) and that was the only time we have seen him do that.
-
My idea is that her last truth is going to be something like "My family has never been happy". We know that she had attracted Pattern at a very young age, so my idea is that it has something to do with her very far past. It wouldn't make sense for her last truth to deal with something that hasn't even happened yet.

I've always got more than a few questions for Brandon, but during my most recent reread of SA I'm very curious about Spren. Questions are down below, feel free to ask them. 1. Is the Nahel bond basicly just new connections in the spirit web connecting the Sprens web to the human's? 2. Is there a physical representation of these new connections? What benefit do Spren get from their symbiotic relationship with greatshells? (Ask if RAFOed) Does this relationship relate to evolution? Bonus tid bit questions: What does the symbol on the book featured on the arcanum inbounds cover mean or represent? Has Khriss or other world hoppers come up with a standard unit of measurement for investiture, and what is it called.
-
Have any highlights?

Eh, I still think that Gavilar was trying to bring back the Voidbringers. At some point Amaram remarks upon how Gavilar would be proud of what he is doing, and Brandon has specifically said that Gavilar was a part of the Sons of Honor. While he did like the WoK and was all about Honor, he could've simply had a different interpretation of it than Dalinar. I don't think him being interested in this way of life is enough counter evidence to get past the evidence we have in favor of him trying to bring back the Voidbringers.
-
Where did that joke/meme start? I've always wondered...
-
Are we sure that the Shardworld is inaccessible, or that it is inaccessible to ONLY Khriss? It could be that Autonomy just doesn't want her there and can keep her away.

I don't think I did one of these when I first started posting, so I might as well get around to it after this new update. I'm Blightsong, I've been posting on here for a bit over half a year to a year, although I've been lurking for quite a bit longer than that and have been immersed in the cosmere since WoK was released. I spend most of my time playing video games and listen to audio books when I should be studying or messing around at my local gyms practicing my martial arts (I do Krav Maga and Kendo). I was largely introduced to fantasy by WoK, which I picked up after seeing it in the recommended section for Wise Man's Fear on Amazon. After reading it I was immediately captivated by the world and quickly found and devoured the other Cosmere books. From then on I've spent a lot of time obsessing over WoBs (I've probably memorized most of theoryland at this point) and writing and refining questions to ask Brandon on the rare occasions that I can swing over to a signing or Con. I'm probably most well known on this for asking a bunch of questions at and transcribing my audio from OddeseyCon (It was nice to meet other sharders there), recalling a lot of obscure WoB, and being very sceptical of most theories. It's been nice interacting with you all, and I plan on sticking around for a long time. See you all around!

It's been a couple days since this event, does anyone have any interesting WoBs or readings. Go ahead and post if you have any recordings or transcriptions

Szeth and Screaming-Spren-Swords (spoiler-y ness)
Blightsong replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Stormlight Archive
I could argue that technically anyone could use an Honorblade to kill a bunch of people, but I agree that it probably would have come up in the conversation. Someone will have to ask him to be sure.- 46 replies

Szeth and Screaming-Spren-Swords (spoiler-y ness)
Blightsong replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Stormlight Archive
Who is to say? Well, Brandon of course, but he has not confirmed that at all and it is purely speculation, while Szeth's screams we know for a fact deal with the spiritual realm. I don't think it is reasonable at all to start saying that all things that could most likely boil down to mental illness (brain chemistry still works the same in the Cosmere) just because we have one confirmed example of this. As for your example that if Wax went around killing people he would also hear screams, I doubt it. We have seen characters murder people in extremely large quantities (i.e. when vin attacks Cett) and this did not happen. The only difference between these two events (or any time we have seen a character kill many people and not experience the screams) is the honorblade, so I would assume that to be the cause. I seriously doubt that any shard bearer with only a blade could ever kill the same number of people as Szeth, it probably wouldn't even be close. They just don't have the survivability that Szeth does to be able to do it. Just having a shard alone would make them massive targets on the battle field, I doubt someone with just a blade would even attempt combat without plate because of how focused every enemy would be on taking them down.- 46 replies

Szeth and Screaming-Spren-Swords (spoiler-y ness)
Blightsong replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Stormlight Archive
My biggest idea on this issue is that having shard plate blocks this from happening, similar to how it blocks emotional allomancy. Most people with shardblades either have plate, or don't live long on the battlefield (I presume, it would make them a target and they wouldn't plate to protect them). It likely takes a lot of human lives for this to occur either way, if this this theory is correct. Shardblades doing this really is my only idea on how this happened. Brandon's reply to my question implies that it is due to Szeths actions, not outside influence, and the only change in Szeth from pre to post Taravangian is having killed tons of people. WoB for reference: INTERVIEW: Apr 8th, 2016 OdysseyCon 2016 BLIGHTSONG Is anything magical going on with the screams Szeth hears? BRANDON SANDERSON Uhhh, Szeth's screams. Uhhm, I'm trying to decide how to answer this. It is not, see here's the thing. What we would call magical may not be considered magical in the Cosmere, but it depends on your definition of magic. Would Szeth if he were on our planet and have done those things would he hear those screams, probably not, but would someone else in the Cosmere who had gone through what he had gone through hear those screams, yes. BLIGHTSONG So it has to do with the spiritual realm? BRANDON SANDERSON Yea, mhmm, yea. TAGS Szeth, screams,- 46 replies

Szeth and Screaming-Spren-Swords (spoiler-y ness)
Blightsong replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Stormlight Archive
I asked Sanderson about this and he said that the Screams would not happen on earth, but that if someone else in the Cosmere had done what Szeth had done they would also hear the screams and that it has to do with the spiritual realm. My guess is that when you kill someone with a Shardblade part of their sheared soul affects you, thus you hear the screams of the dead.- 46 replies

Adonalsium was, essentially, useless?
Blightsong replied to CaptainRyan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'm not all that convinced that the vessels pre shattering were good people. Either way, good people can easily do bad things for the kind of power that having a shard grants. I think the power itself is a pretty good motivator. -
Adonalsium was, essentially, useless?
Blightsong replied to CaptainRyan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This idea makes too me assumptions for me to buy it. How do we know that Adonalsium was those powers themselves? How do we know that Adonalsium hasn't always been, as opposed to having been affected over the time since his existence. How do we know that the shards are all opposed enough to have paralyzed him. In fact, we have WoB that not all of the Shards are perfectly opposed like preservation and ruin were, and that alone should disprove this idea. -
Adonalsium was, essentially, useless?
Blightsong replied to CaptainRyan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I want to state this again, we know that Adonalsium was not useless. Humans, worlds, and the Cosmere would not exist if this was the case. -
INTERVIEW: Feb 25th, 2016 Calamity-Austin QUESTION You've said that Shardblades can be made in other magic systems. So if it's not like a Shardblade from Roshar, what makes it a Shardblade? BRANDON SANDERSON The “shard” refers to the heavy investiture of a Shard of Adonalsium. Most of what you’ll see will be the Roshar ones, but it is technically possible to make them out of the other magic systems. It's going to be a heavily invested magical weapon is kind of how I would define it. QUESTION So are the Bands one? BRANDON SANDERSON Ummm... I would not call them one, but they are close, they're not Invested enough. TAGS shardblades, shards, investiture, Bands of Mourning, Also relevant to my theory: BRANDON SANDERSON Right, Hoid talks about Perpendicularities on Scadrial, if you go look at that there are certain places he talks about that. ,eyes just say that large concentrations of investiture can cause a puncture through the spiritual realm straight to the physical realm. If you know how to use it, you may transition. That's not the only way but is the primary way. QUESTION And of of Course you can soulcast (Elsecall?) to get there. BRANDON SANDERSON Yes. QUESTION Now that's a very interesting analogy you just made, you said "punctured" almost as if it were a spike. BRANDON SANDERSON Yes, yes, that was intentional. Anyone who wants to ask questions after the Magic draft, you guys can come back in maybe 45 minutes. I'll just be hanging out and playing magic. If you’re just here to hang out and ask question, I'll be free to do that in about 45 minutes to an hour.
