  1. Truth be told, I always felt it was like Dalinar's visions or Vin's thing with the Mists, ie: chosen by the shard type of deal Don't have much of anything to back that up, but the similarities almost felt intentional to me, like this was a universal(cosmeriversal?) thing that could be done
  2. I don't either. I just made a comparison with something that had the same effect(Kalad's Phantoms) as an example that they could easily cause horror on a battlefield. Plus, any enemy soldier that takes up Nightblood from fallen lifeless will either faint from nausea or use it indiscriminately, causing even more horror. A battlefield riddled with Nightbloods will become a battlefield riddled with nothing but corpses in minutes. Nobody wins, but Lifeless with a simple command may be "not evil" enough to pick up the swords from the impaled bodies so the bloodbath can repeat itself in the next battle. Sheathed or not, many will run away in terror, but everyone else dies. The more blades there are, the quicker the destruction spreads, the fewer can get away. The sheathed sword doesn't even have to be much of a weapon in this scenario, as there will always be enemy soldiers who will try to take one of the magical weapons to turn the tide(see: Shardblades) and once that soldier unsheathes Nightblood, it's all over.
  3. Oh neat, my inertia argument in another thread might hold water then
  4. Well, from the prologue: The Sheath is probably silver in color as opposed to actual silver, but the sheath is entirely metal. According the Vasher and Vivienna's statements: the blade is nearly 4ft long, making the all-metal sheath 4 feet long. That's gonna add a chunk of weight. Whatever metal the sheath is made of can withstand being impaled into a person(multiple times in this book), so that might be even more weight for the purpose of sturdiness. As a separate point, Nightblood was made for someone with the proportions of a Returned, who are notable larger than normal people. I wouldn't be surprised if that makes the blade "heavier" from the perspective of people who use normal sized swords. Edit: my point is that I think the weight is all in the larger size of the sword and the all-metal sheath, as opposed to it being Invested.
  5. Oh don't worry, I didn't think there was any rudeness. I just didn't make the connection to the amethyst comment since it was in the prior sentence, so I thought you were calling the "Elhokar is Willshaper b/c he's unreliable" idea a stretch. (Which it would be if that was all the theory was)
  6. 1) I will argue this parentheses: many (KR) attributed this to a sense of inherent betrayal. I cannot see any interpretation of this line where "many" being KR makes sense. It feels like it has to be someone else. 2) What actually is this act? "This act of great villainy went beyond the impudence ascribed to the orders" and "many attributed this act to a sense of inherent betrayal." I feel that there are only two options that it can be given what we know: Whatever caused the Recreance, or the Recreance itself. The problem I run into is that I'm having trouble having both uses of this act apply to the same thing and still have the sentence make sense.
  7. I agree with this. The bond weakens, and in order to restrengthen that bond, the Radiant has to re-swear their Order's Oaths. They are at a pseudo level 1(in terms of what needs to be said), while not actually being back at level one.
  8. I'm not actually sure if there was any theory that she was a Radiant, but there was discussion about her being a Herald and/or having stolen Taln's Honorblade. Either way, I'm sticking to my Liss is Chana interpretation of Weltall's Liss=Herald idea, because I like it
  9. Here's another one, courtesy of Calderis:
  10. That would just make them somewhat stronger and faster - it would be useful in war, but not the sort of horror Vasher seems to be thinking of. To counter this example, Kalad's Phantoms are somewhat stronger and faster than normal lifeless, and that makes a huge difference in their effectiveness. I don't see the extra strength granted by a sheathed Nightblood as all that different to a Stone Lifeless with a normal sword. The Nightblood wielder might actually be more effective in a protracted battle since their weapon won't break, while whatever weapon the Phantom has will eventually break and force them to use fists.
  11. While it is possible, it is highly unlikely because of the inherent dangers of it. Preservation's mind snapped as a consequence of the power he expended to split off a portion of Ruin's power and lock it away. He trapped Ruin's mind in the Well and his body in the Pits. Additionally, Ruin's entire goal was to reconnect with that stolen power, so it's possible to do that. Unless the Oathpact traps Odium in a similar way to the Well, Odium could just reconnect with any stolen power whenever he wanted.

  13. My misunderstanding then, I thought you were asking for an explanation of contradicting accounts, rather than pointing out the origin of said contradiction. I can get behind that, since it makes a lot of sense. I haven't read TES in ages either actually, maybe I should do that..
  14. Unless there is something more definitive, I feel that the distinction here is not "what," but when. From the WoB posted by Oversleep: The change itself will require a lot of Investiture, but once it is changed, all the stamp is really doing is maintaining the status quo. Would it be so hard to believe that Soulstamps use less Investiture to keep the change in place than they do to make the change in the first place? A magical application of "inertia," so to speak. This could even end up as an additional reason why they need to be renewed on living beings(not that the system needs another reason), since the lowered Investiture would be even less effective due to the fact that humans are always in flux.
  15. I didn't think my baseless theory time post on him being a Willshaper had to "stretch it." Off the top of my head, I also can't think of anyone else who's made that idea, so I'm halfway curious if you've seen others. They might be an interesting read edit: oh, there's one from 2015. No wonder I missed it. Interestingly enough, his theory brought up nothing that I brought up in mine. They are almost entirely different, yet have the same conclusion...
  16. it only says that she's ahead of Kaladin at the end of WoR though. I ignored this one since it didn't relate to kari-no-sugata's point.
  17. Ohhhh... so that's what you meant. Thanks for the link, it's a fascinating read so far. Interestingly enough, this seems to be a concept that should work better on large scale than small scale. I haven't really dived into the math section yet, but since 1L of displaced air could lift 1.28g of weight, then it stands to reason that it would be more effective as you increase the size of the empty space. The gap between the two numbers increases as the numbers increase, so the extra weight they can carry goes up too. Not sure if it'll ever reach a practical gap since you need strong walls so the vacuum chamber doesn't implode, but interesting nonetheless
  18. I searched Theoryland and could only find these so far: Here, Here, and Here. Are any of these the one you are thinking of? Edit: I haven't gone through the Reddit WoB's section yet, so it may be in there
  19. From Oversleep's post earlier in this thread:
  20. Thanks to the WoB in your Elantris Spoiler tag, I get what you are asking, and I may have an answer: We know that Highstorms and Stormlight existed before Honor and Cultivation arrived on Roshar, while Surgebinding did not exist back then. Honor then co-opted the Storms, so perhaps he did something similar to the Stormfather, maybe even as an unintended consequence of co-opting the Highstorms(he was the "Rider of the Storms" after all and Eshonai didn't seem all that shocked that he spoke in the storm when she changed forms.) If he was tied to the storms in some way, the way Windspren correlate to wind, he'd be a Highstorm Spren or some such. Perhaps when Honor took over the storms, he also made some bond with the Stormfather. Now that I think about it, that bond might have been how Tanavast's Cognitive Shadow was able to merge with the Stormfather when Honor died.
  21. The "spark of life" that living things have should be sticky too, but Nightblood can still drain that with ease. I highly doubt the single biggest issue with using Nightblood can be so easily solved by giving him to a Lifeless.
  22. The comparison to a cubic foot means little since the distance between your hands isn't the issue. 1ft long x 1ft high was too big to easily hold in two hands, so all I really did was cut the size in half, from a certain point of view
  23. Dalinar uses Smokestance in one of his flashbacks, mentioning that it's the best stance for a sword and knife combo. Based on that, I don't think it's unreasonable that some Radiants/Nobles preferred a one-handed sword. I feel like the blade should be thinner if that's the case, but I might be overestimating how heavy Shardblades are. Plate would make this irrelevant, but some people(like Amaram) have only the Blade in modern Alethkar To the OP, either way I like the artwork.
  24. While I also don't think they would be that big, heavy weight wouldn't really be a shock if it's a Gemheart from a Chasmfiend or a Lanceryn. Maybe 6in x 6in x 6in? It's not a big deal anyway, since I doubt they'd sell something that valuable. Edit: Forgot to mention that I think hwiles was also referring to gemhearts with his cubic foot comment.
