  1. Talk about carpet bombing an area lol. Very nice. Theoretically if they learn to fuel their powers with other magic systems, that issue becomes null. That is why the OP and myself brought up soulcasting and allomancy. Theoretically if you could find a way to use allomancy to power your soulcasting, you could result in an endless loop. Soulcast metal. Swallow and burn metal, powering your soulcasting to create more metal to power your abilities. All theoretical, but I think it could happen. Good point Would also be an amazing artist with the mnemonic abilities of a lightweaver coupled with the perfect color recognition and pitch of an awakener. Hmmm, makes me wonder if copper and smoker aviar would be redundant or would it strengthen their investiture hiding abilities. Really like this idea on how to feed larkins. Only other comment I have is larkin grow into a great shell, so keeping one full grown and keeping it fed might cause additional issues lol.
  2. I think the new technological developments will be thanks to Navani, and since Brandon also said he has enjoyed writing her lately, hints that Navani will be one of the view point characters in the book!
  3. And I will re-iterate based on what I originally posted, they are scenes of Chapter 1, Part 1, with Lirin's viewpoint, which would place him to me in Group 1. Still not seeing anything counter to what I put forward in my origin post. edit: new addition! With the announcement of the description of Stormlight 4 involving new technological developments, I think it will be thanks to Navani, and since Brandon also said he has enjoyed writing her lately, hints that Navani will be one of the view point characters in the book!
  4. Here is an article on the coppermind that covers how crem works. It covers Rosharan basic ecology that covers all of this https://coppermind.net/wiki/Crem Again, how do societies on earth deal with monsoon season then? You pick points in the river that flow for the water wheel without the highstorm, and build it to handle floods. Travel booms during monsoon seasons. Just after a highstorm, send various goods. Highstorms come regularly and can be semi predicted. That would provide for weekly travel on the rivers. The planet Roshar was created. Its ecology has functioned for centuries, and humans have lived on the planet and functioned for centuries. Magical or artificial mean nothing to them, because that is normal for them. And I would think the analogue would be closer to tidal towns as Roshar is based on tidal pools, or locations with frequent monsoon seasons such as India and Asia.
  5. From what I have seen, group 1 involves 5 view points. From what I have seen group one is in part one. From what I have seen chapter one is in part one. From what I have seen Lirin is a viewpoint in chapter 1, part 1, and thereby is a view point in group 1. Not seeing where I am confused.
  6. There is a root system. They use vines that are retractable. When a highstorm comes, everything hides. When it passes, it all opens up. As to cities by rivers? Revolar, Shulin, Kholinar(between two rivers), Rathalas, Wedenar, Dumodari, and Karonak. That is just the east side of Roshar, grabbing a bunch of names. There are more. As I said, like the plants, the humans live in view of the highstorms. When the rivers run normally, use the water wheel, when highstorms come, retract and lock into place. And yet there are numerous lakes across the map of Roshar. There is a giant "lake" called the purelake. We have monsoon seasons on earth, and people have learned to live with it. Purelake is barely affected by a highstorm and that is wide and out in the open. The purelakers just find an alcove, put their boat against the rocks, and wait it out. With the shattered plains, the water drains out the east side.
  7. Playing Borderlands 3 into the ground. These are the characters I have made, all various levels (ranging from 10 to 40) Phaselock Siren - when I phaselock an enemy, does action skill damage to all enemies around them. When I kill the phase locked enemy, the lock moves to the next target, and again damages every enemy in the area with DOT. Clears out the room real fast Phase Slam Siren - when I phase slam, my shotgun does 300% damage, plus the stacks of increased damage of regen depending on how many I hit. That coupled with guardian angel where when I die, I come back once at full health and shields and unleash a nova means I never die. Phase Cast Sire - (building towards) when I use phase cast and hit an enemy, it explodes creating a nova. That nova damaging the enemies in the area causes other novas hitting other enemies. Any overkill damage is then shot in an orb to any other enemy. Moze demolition - Iron bear cracked out with the 6 grenade spread mod. Skills cause grenades to crit, heal, and increase explosive AOE. When not in iron bear, using a maliwan with splash damage causes me to get iron bear back faster, causes fire damage, reloads my magazine, and adds grenades and oh yeah atlas grenades heat seat the enemy turning my grenades into explosive heat seating bullets. Moze retribution - 1HP with everything in shields. Have DR and electric resist with shields. If shields go down, they pop right back up to 40 percent. Crits refill my shield. Deal 80 percent more damage while my HP is low, which is always as my HP goes to my shield. Two kill skills and a reload skill increases my damage further Moze unlimited mags - Just started this one. Going for flamethrower on the iron bear, while using hyperian or vladof to unload bullets upon bullets on the enemy Fl4k damage - gamma burst increasing damage by 20 percent, coupled with a whole bunch of static damage boosts, and kill skills getting close to 200 percent damage increase Fl4k tank - Increase personal HP and pet's, with about 35 percent damage taken pushed off to the pet going up to 70 percent when HP is low, coupled with pet getting huge DR and regen when health low, coupled with returning damage when done to the pet results in deadpool with a meatshield lol Fl4k crit - this is a pretty common build. Invisibility for crits, coupled with pet and all skills that crack out crits. Zane shield and doppelganger - Switching places with doppelganger recharges shields. Doppelganger being shot at recharges shields. Being near barrier recharges shields. Dealing cryo damage recharges shields. Switching places with doppelganger causes a cryo nova. Killing an enemy causes a cryo nova. When shields are up, damage is increased, fire rate is increased, actions skill cooldown is increased. So yeah, lotta builds. Still also working on my Golden Deer run in Fire Emblem.
  8. Why aren't rivers used? People sail close to the coast and then shelter from the storm and do fine. If anything rivers should be even better because they can plot certain outposts or points to shelter the barges. Water mills the same thing. A pully system to put the wheel in the water normally. When a highstorm comes, pull a lever to lift the wheel out of the water, and then lock it in place. We have those, and we don't even deal with highstorms. Rivers are most definitely permanent considering they pop up in the cognitive realm. That is what Kaladin and co traveled along in the cognitive realm. You are basing an awful lot on the shattered plains, when that is the unique situation. It takes the brunt of the highstorms. Jah Keved is incredibly lush and jungle like. The great shells by purelake are again incredibly lush. All of roshar is not barren. It just does so differently.
  9. Regarding Laral and Kaladin, you are incorrect. Brandon has spoke specifically about this. WoB below: Isilel Does military service raise one's nahn/dahn? Let's say somebody from a very low nahn, who is basically a serf, right? I mean, they don't have the freedom of movement. So, what if a man like that rises to a sergeant and serves 25 years with distinction, does he go back to being a serf when/if he retires from the military? Would he be required to return to his village/town of origin? Can something like this be properly controlled, even? I mean, do they check traveling people's papers? Brandon Sanderson There's a lot of parts to this. Rising within nahns and dahns happens more easily in Roshar than rising in social status did in most societies that had similar things in our world—for instance India, or even England. To an extent, it is very easy to buy yourself up a rank. What you've got to remember is the very high ranks are harder to attain. By nature, the children of someone of a very high rank sometimes are shuffled down to a lower rank—until they hit a stable rank. There are certain ranks that are stable in that the children born to parents of that rank always have that rank at as well. Your example of the soldier who serves with distinction could very easily be granted a rank up. In fact, it would be very rare for a soldier to not get a level of promotion if they were a very low rank—to not be ranked up immediately. The social structure pushes people toward these stable ranks. For the serf level, if you're able to escape your life of serfdom and go to a city, often getting a job and that sort of thing does require some measure of paperwork listing where you're from and the like. But if you were a serf who was educated, that would be pretty easy to fake. What's keeping most people as serfs is the fact that breaking out of it is hard, and there are much fewer of those ranks than you might assume. The right of travel is kind of an assumed thing. To be lower ranked than that, something has to have gone wrong for your ancestors and that sort of thing. There are many fewer people of that rank than there are of the slightly higher ranks that have the right of travel. It's a natural check and balance against the nobility built into the system. There are a lot of things going on here. Movement between ranks is not as hard as you might expect. Isilel Ditto with the lighteyes—does exemplary service raise one's dahn? Brandon Sanderson It's much harder for a lighteyes, but the king and the highprinces can raise someone's dahn if they want to. But it is much harder. In the lower dahns, you can buy yourself up in rank. Or you can be appointed. For instance, if you're appointed as a citylord, that is going to convey a certain dahn, and you could jump two or three dahns just by getting that appointment. Now, if you serve poorly, if a lot of the people who have the right of travel leave—which this doesn't happen very often—if your town gets smaller and you're left with this struggling city, you would be demoted a dahn, most likely. If a lot of the citizens got up and left, that would be a sign. They could take away your set status by leaving. That’s something that’s built into the right of travel. So these things happen. Isilel If parents have different nahns/dahn's, how is child’s position calculated? For instance, if Shallan had married 10-dahner Kabsal, what dahn would their children belong to? Brandon Sanderson The highest dahn determines the dahn of the child, though that may not match the dahn of the highest parent. For instance, there are certain dahns that aren't conveyed to anyone except for your direct heir. The other children are a rank below. I believe that third dahn is one of the stable ranks. If you're the king, you're first dahn. Your kid inherits. If you have another kid who doesn't marry a highprince, and is not a highprince, then they're going to be third dahn, not second, because that's the stable rank that they would slip down to, along with highlords and the children of highprinces. Isilel Or, and another thing—what happens if a lighteyed child is born to darkeyes or even slaves? Which should happen often enough, given that male nobles seem rather promiscuous. Anyway, are such people automatically of tenth dahn? Brandon Sanderson The situation is very much taken into account in these sorts of cases. Normally—if there is such a thing as normal with this—one question that's going to come up is are they heterochromatic. Because you can end up with one eye of each color, both eyes light, or both eyes dark. That's going to influence it a lot, what happens here. Do you have any heirs? Was your child born lighteyed? This sort of thing is treated the same way that a lot of societies treated illegitimate children. The question of, do I need this person as an heir? Are they born darkeyed? Can I shuffle them off somewhere? Set them up, declare them to be this certain rank. Are you high enough rank to do that? Are you tenth dahn yourself? What happens with all of these things? There's no single answer to that. The most common thing that's probably going to happen is that they are born heterochromatic. Then you're in this weird place where you're probably declared to be tenth dahn, but you may have way more power and authority than that if one parent is of a very high dahn, just as a bastard child in a royal line would be treated in our world. Tor.com The Way of Kings Re-Read Interview (June 10, 2014) So as per the WoB, Laral would maintain her rank. If her child was lighteyed, the child would be of her rank or just below as with normal lighteyed house holds. The child would then outrank Kaladin. If the child was darkeyed, then it would be shuffled to the side and if an heir was needed, they would try again till they got a lighteyed child. If the child was heterochromia, then again depending on whether an heir is needed or not, they would either try again, or they would be put to the tenth dahn. But that does not change the dahn of the lighteyed parent. Roshone being declared a city lord, carried a certain rank, unconnected to Laral's dahn level.
  10. Exclusive newsletter To everyone above regarding Rysn. Brandon has said she will remain an interlude character. Not saying that will mean she won't become a radiant, but any development for her will remain there. Fingers crossed on giant dragon/larkin riding Rysn!
  11. So your question is a little confusing. So if you mean: 1. who do I think would be the other view point, then I said Venli. As to the third, and fifth, I left that blank as I could not find any information that would allow me to conclude such via process of elimination, which was the purpose of my post. 2. the showing of Lirin as viewpoint then there were I believe 4 of note
  12. Group One has three main view points, one minor view point, and one with no view points but hangs out with them. We have seen: I personally think if we can reasonably conclude that Kaladin is in group one, then we can also conclude so is Lirin based on the evidence at hand. But to each their own. As I said, the reference states that Szeth will start Book 4 (of Rhythm of War), in jail. Book 4 is the last part that Group Two is in. So I think Szeth will be in Group two, and will be free till book 4. At which point he will be jailed. What occurs while in jail, I believe will set up Stormlight Book Five. (hope I was able to clearly delinate, as in there are 5 books within Rhythm of War. Szeth is jailed at the start of book 4, within Rhythm of War. Stormlight Book Five is the last book in the first half of the overall series) Hopefully this will help further: Rhythm of War Book 1 Book 2 Book 3 Book 4 (Szeth is Jailed here) Book 5 Conversely if Sanderon means Book 4, as in Rhythm of war on whole, then I would place based on the information, Szeth in group three, and Dalinar and Navani in group 2 That is my thinking.
  13. So going purely on tidbits of information we have been getting from Brandon, I think I have come up with some placements that for myself I am fairly confident in. I am only going to assign those at this time. I know there are additional spots. Group One 1. Kaladin 2. Venli 3. 4. Lirin 5. Reasoning: I will spoiler this as this has to do with the readings Kaladin Lirin Venli Group Two 1. 2. Szeth Reasoning: We know Szeth starts book 4 (within Rhythm of War) jailed. Book 4 (withing Rhythm of War) ends with Group Two. He was told to be jailed by Dalinar. As Rhythm of War is Venli's book, and Szeth's is the Fifth Stormlight book, I believe he is in Group Two. I believe this is him working through with someone about traveling to the Shamanate which is why there is so little of it. It is more to set up the Fifth Stormlight book. I could see this being with Dalinar, but then that would conflict with Sanderson saying a windrunner flew Dalinar elsewhere. If Dalinar was with Szeth, why wouldn't Szeth fly him with gravitation? Regardless I think it is reasonable to conclude Szeth would be in Group Two with a narrower and more focused topic. Group Three 1. Dalinar 2. Navani We know Dalinar will take a step back. We know we will learn more about fabrials. Navani is our fabrial expert, and if they will be focusing on fabrials, she would be the head of it. Brandon recently finished group 3, and stated he enjoyed writing Navani recently. I believe the grouping of information shows Dalinar and Navani grouped together. Alternatively it could be Navani and Jasnah in group three, and Dalinar and Szeth in Group two, since Dalinar told Szeth to be jailed.
  14. Lol you took my ideas for the most part. Though In my case it would be elsecaller for the teleportation. To expand on what Prolific meant. Light itself is not how sand is recharged. Investiture is sourced at the sun on Taldain. The lichen feed off of that and that is what makes the sand able to be manipulated. So any investiture would recharge the sand because the lichen would be feeding off of it. So a lightweaver just creating light itself would not recharge the sand. The illusions might, but then you might as well just power the sand with stormlight.
  15. I see what you are saying. it makes sense, though personally I think it ironically supports what I am saying. If they were purely different, then them as individuals working on their own issues would still result in different people. But if I understand you correctly, you are more saying they are different because of their origin and the effect the origin had on them. Thing is, I believe they are both working on aspects of themselves, that is bringing them more towards each other. Hmm, how to illustrate this. So we agree in the beginning Spensa was more aggressive, while Shallan was more passive right? The similarities I pointed out you agree are there. As you said, Spensa is trying to pull back on the aggression, while Shallan is trying to be more assertive. So I guess I am saying if their personalities are similar except for the aggressive and passive natures (which was derived from different histories), and they are both reducing and increasing each respectively, then once accomplished, would the result not be very similar? A less aggressive Spensa next to a more assertive Shallan? So by using Spensa as a rule brick of what Shallan could have been had she been more assertive, and Shallan as a rule brick of what Spensa could have been more passive, then we could potentially reason how they would be when both are in moderation? And then have an idea of where Shallan needs to get to be ok? Basically finding a common factor.
  16. Again, was not commenting on the power level of the heralds. That is regarding the other thread, and would be a digression of this one. All I was explaining is why the poster might believe the Heralds might have a different power set, or their powers would function differently due to the death of Honor. Feel free to interpret it however you wish, but that is the WoB I was referring to.
  17. Hmmm, maybe if I provide some instances of what I believe is similarities: 1. Shallan with the book merchant in Thaylenah came across the same way to me as Spensa when first meeting the Krell Leader. Very similar in inflection, and word choice. Both got incensed at being condescended to, and both responded in a passive aggressive manner playing on their choice of words. 2. Shallan with Yalb, Spensa with Rig. Very similar in mannerisms and joking when at ease with a friend. 3. Shallan with spren experimentation, Spensa with Cytonic experimentation. Both risked their physical well being to push themselves to research something they deemed important. Both reacted the same way when admonished regarding the attempt at such research. 4. Shallan with chasmfiend extinction ecology, Spensa with hyperdrive economics. Both grasp the wider implications of a seemingly isolated action. Shallan realizes there will be greater ramifications of the frequency of chasmfiend hunts. Spensa realizes the superiorities strangle hold on hyperdrives gives them a monopoly. Where they act different however, is Spensa tends to be upfront bluster, while when we first met Shallan, she was meek and tried to hide that side. We have a WoB that Shallan would have been more assertive had she not grown up with the father she had. So I was wondering if perhaps we have a sort of window via Spensa on how that might have been. And going on that, perhaps draw lines back to Shallan on how she could potentially reach that. Brandon Sanderson Shallan berates the book merchant The timid nature is a result of the problems in her past (see book two's flashbacks). I see the moments of flaring passion as being far more “her.” Shallan's father has an infamous temper; it's buried deep within her as well. If she'd been allowed to grow up more naturally, without the oppressive darkness that her family suffered, she would have turned out as a very different person. Still, the person she could become is buried inside her. In my mind, this is one of the big connections between her as a character and Kaladin. It is also part of why both attract a certain type of spren… The Way of Kings Annotations (Nov. 24, 2017)
  18. Steeldancer The Heralds, back before Honor died, were they directly powered by Honor? Brandon Sanderson Yes. You’ll find out more about that, but the Shardblades [pretty sure he means Honorblades here] were pieces of Honor’s soul that he gave them and direct access to his essence. Steeldancer Like Vin and Elend? Brandon Sanderson Yeah, a little like that. That’s why Honorblades don’t work like Shardblades do, like Radiants do. Steeldancer The second part of the question is, what would happen if they were directly powered by Honor and they were holding Nightblood? Brandon Sanderson RAFO Boskone 54 (Feb. 17, 2017)
  19. I think it is possible for Teod and Duladel to have magic systems of their own, just we have not seen it on screen and or it is not as flashy as Aon's and Dakhor. For instance a cursory read of Elantris would have you miss the potion mixing being its own magic system. WoB confirmed it is in fact its own magic system using certain ingredients, and the "aon" in this case would be how the potion maker stirred the potion. So I would readily believe there could be a more "minor" manifestation of magic in those two locations that either did not seem of note enough to bring up, or we just have not seen yet.
  20. So I am not sure where would be the best place to post this, so I am taking up a large chunk of the beginning of this post for empty space so no one in stormlight who has not read Skyward and Starsight would stumble across any spoilers. Ok, now hopefully this works. As I am reading Starsight (have not finished but I am fairly deep into it), I keep getting struck by the similarities between Shallan and Spensa. Now I readily acknowledge and agree it could do with the fact they are both by the same author and are of similar age range, but I can't help but feel there might be more gleaned from this. They both have a smart aleck side kick that does not understand humans. They both can use illusions. But most importantly they are both sarcastic, with a similar sense of humor, and I believe personality. What separates them to me, is Shallan grew up with an abusive father in a dominant family (as in she is a lighteyes), while Spensa grew up with a loving and supportive family (father before he died, mother, and grandmother) in a non dominant family (outliers, poor, outcast). I cannot help but feel like had Shallan not had the abusive familial upbringing she had, she would have turned out very much like Spensa. I think this is very interesting because I think it can give us some insight into what kind of person Shallan may become one day if she learns to deal with her alters, as well as maybe even work out how she could get there. So TLDR, I think Shallan and Spensa are similar enough that we can learn a lot about Shallan in view of Spensa. Does anyone agree? Disagree? and why?
  21. Not to digress into our other thread, but I believe what @Ookla the Chicken was referring to was the WoB I brought up that explained the reason why honorblades are so stormlight inefficient. That before Honor died they were fueled by his investiture, so they didn't need to be efficient. Not stating this to talk about the power level of the heralds, etc etc etc. Just saying that Honor's death did change how the honorblades worked, so Ookla the Chicken was wondering in what way.
  22. I get and respect that. I think among Odium's forces are going to be things that can get through that potential extreme healing. Whether it would negate (cut off the flow), reduce (make the healing more difficult to accomplish), or be immune to (such as how you cannot heal a wound with aluminum in it). Not saying they were using aluminum, just using its property to illustrate a point. I would elaborate further, but that would go back into rehashing my earlier statements and I am not posting with that in mind. Just that what I envision would not involve a slog fest to try and get through healing just to kill them. But I recognize and respect you think differently. To each their own.
  23. Not to be that guy, but this is the Mistborn thread, which is why I spoilered White Sand.
  24. Yep, so although an elsecaller could theoretically learn to do the extra stuff a willshaper can do with transportation (whatever that may be from being really good at it), typically willshapers will be the ones to do it. Just like soulcasting at distance is more of an elsecaller thing, because they tend to be better at it, though a lightweaver could individually chose to learn to be better at it. I know there is some disagreement on what next I am about to say, so I want to make clear this next statement is just my own personal thinking on it. I readily realize and accept others think differently. I think by extension we will see Kaladin able to be better at adhesion, Szeth better at gravitation, Malata better at division, Lift better at abrasion, Renarin better at progression, Shallan better at illumination, Jasnah better at transformation, Venli better at transportation, stoneward radiant better at cohesion, Dalinar better at tension.
