  1. I hear that, and wholeheartedly agree. Still, what a death though. If you're going out, you may as well go out spectacularly, and she did that.
  2. You should have moved as soon as you saw the shirt, Brightness.
  3. I'm getting a kitten tonight sometime. Your place is now my place... We must serve the Masters catnip.
  4. When you read something like this and have to correct it... Spear. He's darkeyes, which means spear, not sword. Where was this travesty of a summary? While I suppose the rest of it is technically true, I do wish that people writing these things would actually read the books first. Same with cover artists.
  5. Granted, I've never heard of them in French, but these are the Fighting Fantasy books. I read most of them as a child, even owned a few, and they were very fun. My preference though, was for the Lone Wolf choose-your-own-adventure books. With Lone Wolf, you started at book one, and got to keep your character as you played through the series.
  6. Thanks to the Gleeman for reminding me of one of the greatest magic users that ever lived... Miracle Max. I was just considering which magic system would be best, and while I still can't decide, I do feel Miracle Max deserves at least a mention. I mean, who else can revive someone from being mostly dead with a chocolate coated chestnut?
  7. I used to get into trouble for reading at school too. My teacher kept interrupting me to quiz the person apparently not paying attention (also me) to what the rest of the class were listening to, and it took her some time, but she eventually stopped when she realised that I was answering her correctly every time. I doubt I could do that now though. Oh, for the multitasking ability of youth.
  8. My real name is Barry, although my nickname, and the name I prefer my friends to use, is Bort. I don't know why Barry. Perhaps after Barry Manilow, or the boxer Barry McGuighan (or however you spell that). Whatever the reason, I used to get Barry Manilow at school. My nickname came from an episode of the Simpsons. Myself and some friends were sitting around having a conversation about nicknames while the TV ran that episode where the Simpsons visit Itchy and Scratchy Land, where there is a big thing about the name Bort. Now, as I didn't have a nickname at the time, one of my friends declared that I should be named Bort, then they spent the next three weeks making sure everyone knew I was Bort. Now, the only people who use my real name are my writing group, and my family.
  9. But, he's a cat. The bed and house ARE his. As are you. Food Slave, Litter Tray Emptier, and Ear Scratcher.
  10. So, I finished my Civ V game in 2022. I probably could have finished a few turns earlier, but I was arsing around to get other stuff done before the game ended. not for any particular reason, other than because I could. So, in 2022, my people left behind the most advanced civilization on the planet to reach out to the stars, turning its back on friends and allies across the world, the World Council (which we were hosting and had enough votes to control), and something like 30 World Wonders built in our cities. It was an odd game, with just the Science victory enabled, which meant that when I put forward a proposal for the World Council, everyone liked it. Over the course of the entire game, from 4000BC to 2022AD, so just over 6000 years, our entire planet had one war, and that was just a minor skirmish between neighbours. Telling people I wasn't interested in war seemed to stop several before they started. Not sure why though. Until the mid-late game, I had the smallest army by far. Now, given that I was playing Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and the middle east isn't really represented in Civ BE, which side should I go for? There is the African Union, the faction for Southern Asia, and the European faction. All have borders with the middle east, so I guess I should use one of those. Any suggestions?
  11. So, last night, I made the mistake of going back to my Civ V game. Today, I am mostly brain dead again. I made it as far as 1998, I have no idea how many turns, but I am now producing somewhere in the region of 1500 science per turn. When I saved and quit and finally got to bed last night, I was only a couple of turns away from starting the International Space Station project in the World Congress. Once that is done, I'll be in a position to start building my spaceship parts, and move on to my destiny Beyond Earth.
  12. I dunno Void. A full on romance with giant mechs could be just the thing. It would certainly be different.
  13. I played the beta, and that was enough to know that I didn't want to buy the game. Where in other TES games, you create a character, choose a few starting skill boosts, and you're off.. TESO limits where you start depending on what you are. Specific races belong to specific factions, and as will most other MMOs, where you can go depends on your level. They basically took away all the points that make the Elder Scrolls games good, and turned it into 'Yet Another Fantasy MMO'.
  14. Got distracted last night. I didn't get back into my Civ V game, although my habit of playing far too late and being mostly dead for work the next day suggests I leave it until the weekend. Instead, I was playing a new game called Windward (until too late, and today I am mostly dead). It's a bit like Sid Meier's Pirates! but updated, and with the ability to play coop, plus a skill point leveling system. Your starting faction indicates how you best gain xp - the Valiant earn more from combat, where the Sojourn get xp from salvaging wrecks, for example. Your skill points are divided between standard talents (increased hull, armour, damage, crit, and so on), and one of three specialities that are designed for multiplayer play - offense, defense, and support. There is also the ability to create private instances which you can visit either by yourself or with a team, for increased combat, missions, etc. I'll admit I'm not entirely sure what goes on inside an instance, as I didn't try that out last night. Hoping I'll be able to find a few others that play Windward, or at least that will take a look at it and see if they could be interested, so we can get together on a server somewhere.
  15. Somewhere in between the two - 40K style power armour, with an Aliens type atmosphere. I'm glad you pointed out which one the Riptide was, otherwise I'd still be pretty clueless. I see you're working on the titan scale, from your writing, other posts, and your picture above. I was thinking more along the size of a terminator, so, bottom middle for those that don't know 40K (the ones in the top picture are massively larger than those in the bottom picture). They are large enough that they would probably survive being dropped from orbit (That's how they do it in 40K) but still small enough that a single person's allomancy can support it. Unless you've got some way of expanding allomancy to handle something so much bigger than a person (possible with your I-Fields I guess, if you are using the same technology to power your ships and FTL), I just think having something that big would be more likely to interfere with allomancy than use it. That said, if you've got an idea, run with it. Don't let a little criticism stop you. It could even be that both our ideas exist in your Cosmere, both larger mechs and smaller powersuits.
  16. There you go Void. I upvoted you, and you finally got that Popular rating I think this could be quite good as a sort of Space Marine crossover. Scale the suits down slightly (since i got the impression they were pretty massive) into more power armour, then add allomancy, and some kind of deserted spaceship/planet-based complex that turns out to be infested with horrors. Lifeless perhaps?
  17. Well, I reached 1000AD last night, in my Civ 5 Science game. I'm currently running some 600-800 years ahead of reality, having just entered the industrial era that was really in the 19th century. I'm hoping to be off colonizing other worlds before another thousand years pass.
  18. I binge watched the first season last week, and I was really impressed. It took me a while to warm up to Matt and Foggy, but by the end of the season, I thought they were great. I love the darker aspect of the show, and how it's a superhero show, but not exactly because the superhero is just a regular guy who happens to have super senses due to being blind. As for Wilson Fisk, he makes an excellent bad guy, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the relationship between him and Vanessa plays out in future seasons.
  19. I doubt we'll get TES6 simply because that would play havoc with TESO. I will, however, join in everyone in crossing their fingers hoping for Fallout 4.
  20. Only one I can recall specifically Dowanx, is the one right before Winter died. You joined in the bandwagon, saying 'Yes, I'm suspicious of Winter, and I have reasons. If they don't die, I'll tell you later.' They died, so we never found out. Ever since then, any posts to add your name to a vote has been short and to the point. Nothing to give away your reasoning, which makes me think that you are waiting until the lynches are certain, then adding your name to the list to appear as one of us. There was at least one more occasion when you said this ("I have info, but I'm not sharing yet"), but I'm at work here. I'm not going to trawl back through 30+ pages of posts looking for the one I spotted last night. (And yes, last night I did go through all 30 pages looking people up to see who I feel is dodgiest.
  21. My first fantasy novel was Sorceress of Darshiva, by David Eddings (book 4 in the second series involving those characters - great place to start), and after that I delved into other fantasy authors, Tolkein, Feist, and Pratchett mostly - Tolkein because he was the classic fantasy author. Pratchett because they were funny. And Feist because his Midkemia was the first place I read about that did something different with their magic system. Over the years since then, I have expanded my fantasy collection, and now own most of Robin Hobb's books, all of WoT, Eragon, and a host of others.
  22. I have a theory. I believe Dowanx is Spiked. I'll admit, I could be wrong, but I have a few reasons for thinking this. He helped us get our first Spiked kill, but that was after a few cycles where things were going nowhere. An honest vote, or an attempt to gain trust and kickstart the game moving? Remember, it is possible for the Spiked to gain new allies this game, so a deliberate sacrifice is not out of the question, and Winter would be a good choice for this, as he (or she?) is running their own game. Since then, he has waited until the late hours of a cycle, and jumped onto the bandwagon votes for the other lynched (apart from this last one. He said he voted, but it didn't show.) Also, practically all of his comments since that first successful lynch have basically been saying "Yay! Go Villagers!" But he has added nothing of significance. Occasionally, he would claim "I have further info, but will explain it later," then doesn't. I'm willing to listen if anyone has anything to say in his defense, but at the moment, he is looking most likely to me. Edit: Oh, almost forgot. Add all this to the fact that neither I nor those I trust seem to know anything about him.
  23. Civ BE is a basically reskinned version of Civ V, with some small changes. Sid Meier's Starships is more like Alpha Centauri, although it is simplified. I bought it over the weekend, and it is lots of fun, but like I say, nowhere near as complex as the original, or indeed any of the Civ games. Next, my plan is to start a Civ V game, go for a Science victory to get the colony ships launched. Then Civ BE, going for a contact victory (which is the official storyline for Starships), then import that savegame into Starships to see what it lets me start with.
