  1. Yeah I still need to submit it to iTunes and such. The RSS feed, as displayed on the description of videos and on the sidebar of our Soundcloud, is this, which should work fine: http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:102123174/sounds.rss
  2. The word intent, with respect to a Shard's intent, should never be capitalized. It is never capitalized in the books in this context and the quote where I got the word from--a Hero of Ages annotation--did not capitalize it. Capital-I Intent in the cosmere refers to the usage of magic/Investiture and your intentions with it. (I feel very strongly about this; do not capitalize intent when referring to a Shard.) Mandate is a poor term as that implies there was some grand design or something saying "yo this Shard, do this." Adonalsium could have been broken in different ways and so implying that there is some kind of higher thing giving their Shards that is a bad idea. What the Shard is is intrinsic to the force itself. At this stage we will need to wait for Brandon to make a term. We will never agree on a good term. Intent isn't perfect but it's okay enough. (But don't capitalize it.) Anyway, let's get this thread back on track.
  3. There's been no WoB about this. I think it's an oversight. There are many oversights in White Sand. For example, you can see in Ais's daughter's room a regular old lampshade. There's no evidence they have electricity, so why would you have a lampshade like that? There's no reason. Other fun things in White Sand vol. 2: The Lord Mastrell's office has a standard ceiling fan, and there is also a freaking horse. I would say it is simply an art error, but we don't have an official statement on the matter. I've lampooned this on the podcast, but it really makes no sense for the sand masters to bring a freaking boombox to the Kerla for the ceremony/ritual/thing.
  4. We're back to discuss White Sand Vol. 2. There's a lot to discuss, not to mention the ceiling fan and a horse. There's also apparently a person named Trell in this, which is pretty crazy. But listen to us discuss White Sand, its art change, and everything else. As you can expect, it's... uh, a very positive podcast! We have Eric (Chaos), who David thinks might actually be more annoyed with White Sand at this stage. We have Ian (WeiryWriter), ever the optimist about White Sand, and David (Windrunner), who needs to clear his throat sometime. (Stay to the very end for what is... allegedly comedy) Highlights: Trell - 1:27:30min Who's That Cosmere Character - 1:48:30 If you'd like to submit a character for Who's That Cosmere Character, email it with five clues to [email protected].
  5. Hello, Please do not post discussion in Tech Support. Make a topic in another place, or PM each other. And please do not double post. I am still not sure what you mean, SallyA. Some of your posts were hidden due to them having OB spoilers outside the relevant spoiler board. I see no reason why add-ons would make any difference.
  6. This statement is too extreme. I would like you to be empathetic to people who dislike characters, namely Adolin, here. There will come a time where you dislike something Brandon did too. There are people who disliked stuff in Oathbringer. That's fine! They get a place here, too. Do remember this, and remember that people who dislike some aspect of a story just want these books to be the best they can be. Of course, there has been toxicity, at times. That and hatred (though I do agree this is an exaggeration) will be dealt with, so please feel free to post in these threads. Character threads are things we want to promote a lot of. If you don't see a thread you are interested in, make one yourself! Certainly there has been conflict, but things are rolling along better. The situation is improving and will continue to improve. @BraidedRose I think you make some good points there. You should definitely be allowed to post such opinions. I would, however, like everyone to realize that... Well. Imagine something you loved. A character you love in Stormlight, or really anything you feel strongly about. If someone said that that thing you enjoyed and loved sucked, it is natural human tendency to take that thing personally. That doesn't make it right, but it is important to realize that here on 17th Shard, the probability is that people will be intensely passionate about Brandon stuff. That's kind of the name of the game. I do find it interesting that Adolin does seem to elicit very extreme responses. It all seems to really come down to him, and feelings on him. I totally agree with you, BraidedRose, criticism should have a place here. If escalation from criticism happens, you let me know--or any mods know, through the report feature. But there are a lot of people who do really like Adolin, and it's important to realize that. Since November there have been occasions where open mockery of "Adolin fans" has occurred, using it as a slur and a way to silence people. (I believe this is what Calderis trying to allude to, but not so specifically, in that criticism can bend too far the other way. He is indeed not saying anyone here is saying that.) So everyone, do know that if you have an opinion, you can go too far in saying criticism. But at the same time, the reaction against criticism can go too far as well. This goes for absolutely everyone here looking in this thread. Give criticism with grace, react to it with grace. And I will say this thread has had very graceful criticism, with just a little bit of an exception. So thank you all. (And just as a note, if you disagree with someone, a snarky response probably is not the best way to de-escalate matters.) Just to be clear, the moderation team is strongly in favor of this statement.
  7. Hello, Please keep this thread focused on your opinion and sharing your thoughts. Obviously people disagree, and you don't need to engage saying you disagree with other interpretations. Be nice. There is absolutely no need for bitterness and we are all friends here. I have removed several posts here.
  8. This week we get more focused and actually discuss Emerald City Comic Con Words of Brandon. We discuss sand, the Fused, and one fateful bet Jebus made and Brandon crushed his dreams in dramatic fashion. We also see someone's hatred of France. We do get into analysis of some things from the Orem signing this month, too. I'm Eric (Chaos) who doesn't know how to pronounce Pacific Northwest things despite being from there. We have Ian (WeiryWriter) who is back in the Stormfather's good graces. We have Ben (Overlord Jebus) who says American water is weird. Lastly, we have Matt (Comatose), who is actually French. We also end on an epic Who's That Cosmere Character, and I feel very good about myself. Want to send in one? Email it to [email protected]. Main Topic: 00:03:15 Who's That Cosmere Character: 01:32:15 Oh, and if you're wondering what Jebus's bet was, here it is: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/324/#e9302 Listen to it so you can hear Jebus's soul get crushed.
  9. Regarding the childhoods of characters such as Shallan and Adolin and comparing and contrasting: this should indeed be a different thread. It could even be two threads, one for Shallan and one for Adolin, or one if you feel it should be compared and contrasted. We are getting off task. Let us focus on whether the love triangle is resolved here. This thread is not meant to be "here's generic discussion on these three characters." You can make multiple threads, and more focus will lead to better discussion.
  10. I would much prefer one of those titles! I am totally fine with the romance being discussed, I just don't want one thread where that's the ONLY place it is discussed. I want character discussion to overall be valued and locking it to one thread doesn't promote that idea, you know? At the end of the day, everyone, if you read a thread and are like, "hmmm, I don't agree with that, I'm going to make a different thread saying my point of view"--please feel free! I'm totally fine with a bunch of threads where people have their own personal takes on the love triangle, for example. It doesn't have to happen like that, but totally could. I do understand that, SLNC, I just don't want there to be one place where that's the only place where you discuss romance. We want to promote all discussion and I do think it has value but I also want to strongly encourage people to make new threads--on other specific topics or other takes--so it's kind of a hard line to balance, you know?
  11. Hey guys. I'm very concerned about having any one central place for discussion on this love triangle. I don't think having all discussion on the relationship is wise and will lead to high tensions. Smaller discussions, I feel, will be better. I just feel like having it condensed really did not help, and having megathreads... I don't know. I'd like us to not repeat the same mistakes. I would like us to rename this topic to a more specific aspect of the triangle and if other aspects wish to be discussed, you can make threads on those. Can we do that Dreamstorm? Could we perhaps discuss the poll saying about a third thinking the triangle isn't resolved? I do wish to have character discussion, obviously, and I'm really liked the topics Dreamstorm has made. But I strongly don't want there to be "one" thread to rule them all with Shallan, Kaladin, and Adolin. Perhaps I am biased in that I very much don't want to have conflict, and I'd like to have everyone be nice and respectful
  12. You're welcome to continue this in another thread or PM me, but this is very off topic here. I do not intend to close this topic. Individuals will be talked to, and that will be the end of it. We are adjusting actions as per our very fruitful discussion after ASK's closure. You should ALWAYS report things and we are not saying you police yourselves. That is the opposite. I'm saying for individuals if you are heated, just go do something else, and others can contribute to the discussion. This is pretty cut and dry. Discussion can continue but if people are going to be snarky and disrespectful they will not continue in this thread in particular. That's what I'm talking about. Report people doing that and they will be dealt with. This is the opposite of closing the thread. This thread has literally been the opposite of an echo chamber, in particular. I can tell you're upset, but we are literally doing exactly what people wanted from the fallout of ASK. No censoring. No public call-outs. Making sure discussion flows respectfully--which it has not today and has had some issues with earlier in this thread. Warn, discuss, and potentially remove bad apples from discussion. That's exactly what we intend to do. Obviously you're upset from ASK closure and we are working on moderating more effectively as per many people's feedback. I do not know what more you would want than continual improvement and effort made in this regard. ASK is a completely different thread where people felt it was the only way for people to discuss character stuff. Smaller dedicated threads have led to improvement and there are many good romance and character threads existing right now. This is an improvement having this be more decentralized, and has resulted in less conflict. If you'd like additional threads, post them then. The insinuation that we close popular threads is completely ridiculous and is not a criteria for closing threads, nor ever will be. PM me if you'd like to continue discussion on this. We are not continuing this discussion here as it has nothing to do with Maya. This thread I have no intention of closing and we will be aggressive with dealing with disrespectful and snippy behavior, rather than let wounds fester. We will stay on topic from now on, here.
  13. We will be PMing and talking to multiple people in this thread today, as we have already been doing in this thread already. Please use the Report feature in the future rather than making a public call-out. Thanks! Just as a point of order: A completely acceptable resolution to a thread is people saying their piece and people disagree. You can actually agree to disagree and not be snippy and disrespectful about it. Then you can go to another thread and make your voice heard there. I'd say chill out, but that hasn't worked historically (so... expect some PMs soon). But holy crap guys. Chill out. Oh no, someone disagreed on the internet? What's new? That doesn't mean we need to make this waging war. This isn't about who's "right". People are going to have opinions and you will encounter many which aren't yours. That's okay! You will not conclude any thread where you have "won" and persuaded people and that is okay! So say your piece, disagree respectfully, then go get some tea. We are being reserved with removing posts, due to intense criticism where people think we are censoring opinions on all sides. We aren't, we won't, but we will talk to people who are being problems, we will warn them, and if necessary, remove them from character discussions so cooler heads can say their pieces too.
  14. Today, we have a pretty crazy podcast, where Jebus and I descend into madness. We had planned to discuss what he thought of Emerald City Comic Con, the VR Experience (which he got to try), and then talk about WoBs from there. Brandon, however, had a different plan, and instead posting INSANE things on Reddit that we just had to discuss. We start with discussing the VR Experience, then we talk about, you guessed it, Patji as we descend into madness from Brandon's Reddit post. We hurt our brains, do some sweet theorizing, then we move into some Emerald City Comic Con Words of Brandon. That's fun and all and then we wrapped it up. But then, Brandon continued to post on Reddit right as we ended our recording session, so we then add a good thirty more minutes of more Patji and Shard stuff. Watch us go to the brink of madness and back this time on Shardcast. Today it's just Eric (Chaos) and Ben (Overlord Jebus). We were going to have Ian but the Stormfather refused to allow that this time. We will continue discussing ECCC Words of Brandon and the most recent signing next time. Also upcoming is White Sand vol. 2 and other fun topics as well!
  15. Hi everyone, With the advent of Arcanum's Suggestion feature, general users (who are logged in) can edit any entries which staff then approve. This has been quite great. However, this was only a stepping stone to our goal of having anyone transcribe stuff. That's the dream for Arcanum, to have new events and everything be crowdsourced so we can get info in quickly and not having transcribers burn out. Of course having people create entries is essential to having you actually transcribe, and in this feature patch, now you can do that! First we need to explain a little bit of terminology. When we get a long audio file, Arcanists divvy it up into what we call "snippets." These snippets are the relevant audio pieces that would appear in an entry. It's a fragment of the total audio. What we do is we create entries from those snippets, and that will then put you in an Edit Entry screen where you can transcribe it. In this update you can also directly add text entries--stuff that has no audio--which is good for Reddit posts or other text posts Brandon makes. However, it is important that if an event has audio, don't add your paraphrased text in until the audio has been transcribed. In our experience many times paraphrased reports have sometimes been rather inaccurate. It's our hope that some of you will help us in this quest of getting information in, and there's still stuff from prior to 2014 that needs work done. If you're interested in really diving into Arcanum work, it's essential you join Discord and come into the #arcanum channnel so we can coordinate what to do. Some events have snippets that don't need to be transcribed, and we keep them so that they don't vanish into the aether. Please make sure if you want stuff to do to hop in that channel. There are things, but we want to make sure your time spent transcribing--which is very tedious--is spent well. So with that in mind, if you want to help, the rest of this news post will describe how exactly you can transcribe. First (of course) come into Discord and we will get you something to do. Then there are two types of things you can add and they have different workflows. Creating entries from audio When you go to a relevant event page, you can click the top for Sources. You'll notice that when you're logged in, there's now an edit button! Don't worry, you aren't going to break anything by clicking it. When you click it, you will get the Edit Source page Then, select a source. Pick one with snippets. You'll notice you can listen to the full audio of the signing and scrub wherever you like now. But notice below that; there's the list of all snippets. Snippets that don't have an entry will have a red pencil in the box to the right, and ones that do have an entry have a white pencil. If you click the Edit button on the ones that don't have entries, Arcanum will make an entry and then you can transcribe the snippet there. I recommend if you do this to open the Edit Entry page in a new tab so you have the Source page open the whole time. That's that. Once you save the entry, Arcanists will need to approve it for the general audience and for style, but other logged in users will be able to see your transcription and edit it too. It's a collaborative process. Text Entries For events that have no audio--old events, paraphrased reports, or interviews or other text based things--you do things slightly differently if you want to add it. From the event page, on the sidebar, click Add Entry. This will give you an edit window where you can then add the entry. This also will need to be approved by Arcanists. Style We have a style guide for writing Arcanum entries. It probably needs some editing, but you can look at it here. When transcribing an entry, if there is any issue with understanding the audio, please use the following guidelines: *this* - for non-audio stuff, like *laughs*, *writes in the book* or *inaudible* [this] - for clarifications, like someone asks about Shardbearer [Vessel] of Preservation <this> - when the transcription is not certain but you make the best guess because you think you can hear something We hope you come join us for this journey of transcribing what Brandon says. Come say hi on Discord! Already there's a lot to do in the Arcanum Unbounded release, so I'd check that out first if you're interested.
  16. Info on the transcription process is coming shortly. You can upload the source but all sources must be Arcanist approved (to remove things like personal information, etc.) and snipped. If it is already snippeted you can create a new entry for it.
  17. I would indeed like this to focus on Maya. Please feel free to make additional threads on any of these sub topics though!
  18. Today on Shardcast, we are talking about various "hacks" and other weirdness in cosmere magics: Savantism, Resonances, and Compounding. Here we will talk about what those are, talk about the weirdness with WoBs about Wax, theories on Resonances, and explain Compounding, because that always seems to go wrong. We also have a new segment: Who's That Cosmere Character! If you have a character along with five clues for them, send it to [email protected]. We will eventually get them on the show! But, you know, maybe make them harder than the ones we used here, because it didn't go super flawlessly for Ben here. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), and Ben (Overlord Jebus) who is in America this time! See you next week for some discussion on the VR experience, Patji, and Emerald City Comic Con. Table of contents: News - Update on the Secret Project (00:1:28), Main Topic (00:04:50), Who's That Cosmere Character (01:00:00)
  19. I'm not disagreeing with you; there will be a Recent Entries thing eventually, I assure you. I understand the annoyance with those general events.
  20. In chapter 30: “I’m not,” he admitted. “I was worried, honestly. The Bands are drained, mostly, but we could probably recharge them by compounding. The power they offer is something…” Compounding should be capitalized, as it was in Alloy.
  21. I'd say this is a great topic for a new thread
  22. Coding is nontrivial. You'd think it'd be an obvious built-in feature, but it isn't.
  23. You can test in a PM, too, if you're worried.
