opinion [OB] What topic do you feel has been discussed to death?
Chaos replied to MonsterMetroid's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thanks for keeping this topic civil, everyone! I'm so happy -
[All][Long, invested poop-post] Blood, post-poop, invests longer. [Al]
Chaos replied to Tobbzn's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Just so you know you only need to tag Oathbringer stuff in this board, otherwise it is assumed to be full spoilers (sans the new book.) -
I don't agree the Nightwatcher is that but maybe. Autonomy's are quite different as the letter seems to imply they talk and act somewhat in a group, though it isn't totally clear.

Honestly I do need to do some software updates and that should improve things.

Apparently we didn't have a topic on this one Most all of this signing, which I attended, is all here: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/314-salt-lake-city-signing/ There were two parts of this signing. The line ended very fast and so some people and I hung out and asked Brandon questions. One was this: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/314/#e8935 where we talked about which Shard Brandon would take, and I casually inserted Autonomy in there as making "aspects", which Brandon didn't disagree with there, as you can see. Anyway, since the line ended fast, we all ended up walking to a nearby games shop to play a Magic draft. He literally wrote "Be back at 5" on the thing that has the Oathbringer cover on it. It was hilarious. As we walked I turned off the recorder and asked him about this line about Autonomy. Roughly, it went: Eric: Did you mean to imply that Autonomy wrote the second letter in Oathbringer back there, with the aspects thing? Brandon: Yeah, I did. He implied that he wasn't trying to make the mystery of the second letter very weird, and thought it was fairly obvious it was Autonomy. He later said that any Shard can make these aspects, which is very cool. Now, I would say we should use the word avatar as that's the word referenced in Oathbringer, but I used aspect in the signing.

I can definitely see that happening too! I'm just super confused by how important the name change to Vyre will be, because it always seemed very superfluous to me. If he sees himself as a totally different person then I think it's possible, if not, I think your interpretation could totally happen. It's very hard to say.

This has never occurred to me and I'm on Chrome on Android, and I have a lot of tabs and apps open. Never occurred to my on my Pixel 1 or 2 XL.

No one is forcing you to follow links, and there isn't even very much explicit there. I don't agree that post should be removed, and it's relevant in that thread.

This week on Shardcast we talk about Moash, and the controversy revolving around him in Oathbringer. We analyze his role in Oathbringer, our thoughts, and more. Oh we also talk about Elhokar. No reason... We also make some tangents about Star Wars and Hoid. Of course there are big Oathbringer spoilers here! Our cast today is Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Matt (Comatose), and Alyx (FeatherWriter). I mostly was able to remove Alyx's microphone whir, and we are saying the word "like" less. Professionalism! Here's a link to at least an image of the Dan Wells newsletter: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/304795942719062017/398891598903246848/received_2181197685227523.jpeg

No, that's how I've pronounced it, but I look in Arcanum and it seems to be that, but with a -dra sound at the end. Oops.

Tone down the rhetoric and chill guys.

It is purely Brandon Sanderson works and his books (noncosmere is in too). The Wheel of Time is a massive thing and if people care to investigate old WoBs they can use Theoryland, as was that site's original purpose.

Welcome to Shardcast, and Happy New Year! We are starting this year with a podcast that's way too long, but there's much to talk about. We're talking about Dalinar visiting the Valley and the Nightwatcher, and all that stuff. Obviously, there are Oathbringer spoilers here. We talk about the Old Magic, the age of the Old Magic, and of course, the Stormfather's love of the Oxford comma. (I'm only somewhat kidding.) I'm Eric, and I'm joined today with Ian (WeiryWriter), and Matt (Comatose)--who you can hear actually rifling through pages of his physical Oathbringer copy. What a weirdo. (Just kidding.) Apologies on this podcast coming a bit late this week. I was traveling and this took quite some time to edit! See you next week.

I agree with you, and am not saying you shouldn't continue talking. I'm not making an edict, I just am worried that other voices haven't gotten to say things in this thread because several voices have heavily dominated the discussion. You of course can stay and I don't want to censor anything. It is just a minor concern of mine.

@Wit Beyond Measure I'd like to add a bit more to Pagerunner's reply. First, I'm sorry you feel people are pouncing on you. Please report relevant posts that you feel this is occurring and we will deal with them, and also, feel free to PM me if you'd like to discuss further. I'd like to say you are quite valued. I saw, on the day you posted this topic, you #1 in reputation for the week. I've looked through and I think most things have remained civil. Please report stuff you think isn't. The thing is, the cosmere does have correct answers and incorrect ones, so I think in some cases it's totally fine for someone to say "Yeah, I don't know about that, and here's why." Veterans could do maybe better at explaining and try to not feel annoyed, which maybe they did. But really, there's always fresh blood and we want to encourage new ideas and thoughts. It is important for people doing "correcting" to say so with grace, and it's also important for the person being corrected to also take that with grace. No offense should be taken--though it is important for any corrections to be said respectfully. But I don't think people are offended by you, at all. Many just have a big desire for people to understand what is correct or not correct, and in the cosmere, that is a thing that we have. I would like to discuss the matter of subforums, as forum layout is a thing I've thought about a huge deal. Subforums are not inherently good. In fact, they are actually inherently bad, in my opinion, and I consistently resist adding subforums. it's a rote reaction for me. The reason is simple: the more choice there is in where things can be located, the more friction there is in a new member deciding where to post. Having too many choices is not really good. There's also the factor that I know we will be around for a long time, and Brandon will be writing books for a long time. I knew at the outset of 17th Shard that having a subforum for each book would be a horrible mistake. People would constantly place things in the wrong forum. It can be so hard, you know? With your suggested forum, even without the context of the rest of your post, I could never make such a thing. It would be confusing for people to understand what that means with other varieties of theorizing, and so many people would get that wrong. It's quite impractical. People have asked me for shipping forums. I don't want to do that either. I don't want people who feel character discussion is valuable to feel ostracized by the structure of the forum. But also, we just don't structure forums by type of discussion, but just by the book/series they are in. That structure has a lot of advantages: it's immediately understandable to anyone. I'm not saying that structure is perfect. But imagine a world where there's a forum for "Oathbringer Character Discussion" and "Oathbringer Theorizing" and maybe another with that (memes?), who knows. That quickly spirals out of control really fast if that happens per book. I don't even agree that books should have their own dedicated board. This one will go away after the spoiler period and merge with the rest of the Stormlight board. I don't know if that's perfect but surely it's better than us having seven subforums for Stormlight, one for each book, where people accidentally use later info in the older boards. (Plus, the older boards wouldn't get nearly as much use as the new ones.) This whole train of thought makes me queasy. Forum structure is really difficult and it will please no one. Some will want more structure. Some will want less. Some will want it subdivided differently. Some want something better for spoilers. All of these are important concerns and I do want people to know I listen to them. The Oathbringer subforum has been chaotic, and I don't know if there's an easy way to make it better. (Wouldn't any book release be chaos regardless, even if we subdivide it a bit?) Maybe Stormlight should get its own category of multiple forums, since it is the most popular book discussion board. And it is a worry that, in our second decade, people will feel they need to read too much to join in on some discussions if we keep merging spoiler boards like this. These are all things I think about. But, I'd say that more subforums is usually not the answer.

You are more than welcome to continue to post, but you spend a lot of time in this topic. I don't know if that is necessary, especially if you're implying here that the book wasn't a good time investment. I think the points have been made.

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!

What the. That's so stupid. Why! You'll be missed and we WILL see you again, buddy. -
That is coming eventually. Having Recent Entries is a priority.

That's fine. Yeah, I thought there would just be automatic converters like that

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year's. We hope you're enjoying your holidays, so we thought we would bring you holiday cheer by talking about how a bunch of knights betrayed their oaths. Yup, the Recreance is very cheery. Note in this podcast has Oathbringer spoilers! Today we have Kerry (KChan), Ian (WeiryWriter), and Eric (Chaos). I also did a different audio editing style on this one, which should hopefully fix volume issues. It did distort Kerry at one point, though. Also, our True Desolation--the war against us saying the word "like"--is not going the best, but it's noted and we are working on it. Lastly, what things would you like us to discuss in the next year? I'm always terrified we will run out of content. Though we can't promise when or if we'd get to your idea, please let us know below!

It is not legal for us to do this or distribute it. We asked Dragonsteel if we could do this, and we can't. Though, you can convert it yourself. (I don't know the specifics but I thought there are automatic converters for this, I think.)

I didn't say I didn't like Defending Elysium. I said (I think) it was a little weird and definitely feels like an older Brandon work, which is fair. What I didn't like was Sixth of Dusk

He is saying that it's Autonomy there (specifically an aspect of Autonomy). He alluded to this on the 16th. OB epigraph spoiler:

This week, Brandon's yearly update on all his projects, State of the Sanderson, came out. It always comes out on the 19th, which his birthday, and we thought we'd do a quick episode talking about the updates, changes, and analyzing all the things in it. We thought it'd be a short episode, so naturally it is 40 minutes instead. Due to the holidays, it is just Ian (WeiryWriter) and Eric (Chaos). Next week we'll have a big podcast on the Recreance to close out 2017.
