  1. Yeah, okay, you have a point there. Nah, it is super confusing distinguishing between "forum" (individual boards) and the forums, the set of all of those boards. I just got confused with the discussion of server stuff ... Okay, point Still, I think that is different from this case. That rule assumes that spoiler topics aren't segregated. See, there may exist topics in the main parent board (in this case, the Elantris board) that may have relevant answers that are supplied in the newer book. For example, say pre-Alloy, there may be discussions on the Lord Ruler's "Feruchemy trick", but would you really want to wait six months to even say the word Compounding (which is technically an Alloy spoiler) and give the "Feruchemy trick" its proper name? There exist things that can add to discussion on the parent board, and those don't need to wait six months. They still warrant a spoiler tag, but you can still address older topics with the new information. So I guess in this new paradigm, I imagine it would be like, some amount of month(s) of spoiler segregation, and then the rest of the six months still need spoiler tags. Maybe I'm dumb and that's too complex, but I think even after, say, a month after release date, we are past the realm of people who have read the book--going off the assumption that 17S members are more dedicated fans and are more likely to grab the book quickly.
  2. I meant Hoid, sorry, not the Derethi priest. The Derethi priest is just another cameo showing us that this is Sel, and everything is connected.
  3. I think Brandon may have changed the point about there being a lot more than sixteen god metals since 17S's interview. Not sure what to think about that, but this seems to suggest it:
  4. Isaac is also IsasikShulin on 17th Shard. If the version on Isaac's site isn't sufficient for your purposes, you could email him and see if he can help. He is super nice.
  5. I also agree that Preservation played the long game. I often wondered why Ruin couldn't simply see the future as well as Preservation could, because if he could, he simply would've killed Vin after she released him from the Well. I think this theory explains why different Shards are better at future sight than others: (It is elegantly simple, really)
  6. Same with here, but it's coming by early in many, many places.
  7. I thought merging the ARC discussion of Alloy of Law to the main Mistborn board and marking spoiler topics afterwards worked perfectly fine..... I need more persuasion on this, to say the least. I don't know. Maybe. I'm initially opposed, but it seems you guys would rather do this, which is fine. We want to make new guys happy. So, sell me on it I did some research, I believe now the TES board won't appear in the "Latest Posts" thing on the forum home page. (Which, probably is the biggest benefit to segregating things initially) EDIT: I just checked, it does work. Sorry for not having enabled initially, that's completely stupid of me. I'm confused here; are you and Voldy talking about a completely separate forum, like, an entirely new subdomain? Obviously, additional subforums (like this TES board) is unrelated to server load or memory. Even a separate forum system is negligible on server resources. For example, there are like four forums installed on 17S, actually. It is traffic that costs system resources. A separate forum (as in, a separate system from 17S) for spoiler stuff would be annoying, though, because we'd need separate logins and it would be unpleasant to remerge them. Okay, I guess I am warming up to this idea of having a subforum for the latest book. I think it is more my natural bias against subforums in general that is perhaps clouding my judgment I need to think about if I actually have some real coherent reasons against this. Doubtless Josh will successfully persuade me Six months is way, way too long for any book, though.
  8. He's actually the Imperial Fool mentioned in the book. He's the one who got Shai imprisoned.
  9. Yo: http://www.amazon.com/The-Emperors-Soul-Brandon-Sanderson/dp/1616960922/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350346597&sr=8-1&keywords=the+emperor%27s+soul Can't help you with the others though
  10. I hate to doublepost, but I just wanted to inform all of you that lyssie hates Windy's mom.
  11. Windrunner and James are jerks.
  12. I'm not going to step into the religious discussion here, because this is Zach's farewell topic. All I want to say is that I'm going to really miss you, man, and I hope you have an awesome, spiritual time
  13. I agree with you for the most part. I think if Emperor's Soul was about 30 years after, that sounds about right. Also, that would be about the time of Elantris 2, so that's also interesting... Ralkalest starts with an R, like Rayse. Also sounds malevolent. Therefore, Ralkalest is a physical embodiment of Odium. BEST. THEORY. EVER. There are absolutely no flaws in logic with this.
  14. So, as we did with Alloy of Law, we're doing an Emperor's Soul pre-release board. However, since Emperor's Soul is widely available, we're letting anyone into it with no special permission required. Obviously this board will contain spoilers, so if you haven't read it, steer clear! We'll be moving topics in this board to the main Sel forum after November 1st. Now for the people who have read it, what did you think? I personally thought Brandon nailed it. This book was awesome. As a cosmere nerd, too, this book had so much awesome. Clear definitions of the Realms? Heck yes. Thoughts you guys?
  15. Seems you are correct on that note, it doesn't work on IE9 on my computer either. Then again, every font looks slightly wrong on IE9, too, and it is really throwing me off. (I wonder if IE10 fixed this) I believe the Hero of Ages Chapter 76 annotation about the tilt will clear everything up. I knew there was an annotation about that somewhere:
  16. Indeed there is! It's the Multiquote button, just to the right of Reply. You'll hit Multiquote on each post you want quoted, then hit "Add Reply" at the bottom. I kind of feel you are overthinking the Snapping issue with Preservation. Preservation wanted the Snappings so that there would be atium Mistings, thus burning away Ruin's body. That, I feel, was the point of the whole thing. Preservation could not stop people from dying, but then, Ruin also enhanced it to make it seem more destructive. Because Preservation surely knew there would be some deaths, he set up the mists to Snap people only in the times when it may actually be necessary to have such atium Mistings; namely, around the time period where the Well refills, when it would be possible Ruin could be freed. That's my random, off the cuff theory. Now, your question about how the mists stopped Snapping after the Ascension is far more interesting. I don't have an answer for that other than it is a very good question.
  17. If I could give fifty upvotes for this, I would. It's a video involving Brandon, guys. You should really click that link...
  18. Hey there, good to have you here! You're thinking quite well, and fortunately there are answers for a few of these questions. Let me see if I can help However, I am a bit burnt out tonight to do deep astronomy questions. But cosmere? I can do that Hmmm, I am not quite sure, but I don't think it would have had the effect you think it does. It certainly would not exhaust Preservation's power--that power is far vaster than someone's use of Allomancy, unimaginably so. Since Vin had infinite access to metals during that, I'm not sure duralumin would even do anything. After all, she blew up Kredik Shaw by herself. She wasn't hindered by an upper bound for flaring metals anymore, I don't think (but it has been a while since I've read that sequence), which is what duralumin does. I think that, if anything, duralumin burning the mists would have made Vin become Preservation that much faster. Well, I think that simply speaking, Kelsier never fully took up Preservation. He is dead, so he can't take the power up. Rather think about it this way: with Leras's death, the Shard Preservation needed to have some mind take up the power, until its new holder could take it. So Kelsier was lending himself for that task. He wasn't bound to the Shard like Leras or Vin was, and once Vin became Preservation, Kelsier's services were no longer required. As for why Kelsier was the one to take up Preservation for a time, rather than some other spirit... I think Brandon just chalked it up to "Kelsier is a meddler," haha. I think Kelsier was able to speak to Spook and Vin for separate reasons. In Spook's case, Kelsier could communicate with him because Spook actually had a real faith in Kelsier. That helps the divine communication. For Vin, I believe Kelsier could only speak to Vin near the very end, right before Vin took up the power and after Marsh tore out the earring. I don't think is inherently mysterious: Vin is so close to the mists (and therefore Preservation) that it would have been much easier for Kelsier to communicate with the future holder of Preservation. I'm not sure anyone has explicitly found the answer to that question. Yes, it always began Snapping people when the Well was almost fully filled. I would assume this means that a thousand years before the Ascension, the mists Snapped then as well, but that era is well lost to history.
  19. Very cool it is being shipped from Amazon. Very interesting Amazon's changing the ship date. I mean, after all, it says it is in stock right now.
  20. Wolfram Alpha is the best. I use it all the time.
  21. Fortunately, Zane counts as both Also, hey. The biggest fans can also be the biggest critics.
  22. This is amazing: http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/7/3470748/watch-this-ohio-state-marching-band-video-game-tribute
  23. You do realize there are kind of a lot of women on 17th Shard, right? For example, we have two administrators who are female, and three other staff are female, who are online regularly. I've always been pretty pleased with the amount of girls on the site. I think there are a lot more than you think. They just don't make a big deal about it. (Because why does it matter? Everyone is here because they like Brandon's works.) Well, my mom really likes Brandon's works... I don't think there's anything about his books that make it inherently hard to market towards women. Brandon has won multiple Romantic Times awards for his books, after all... I hope you don't mind that I edited out the poll; I did not feel that it really helped the gender discussion here.
  24. Psh, not creepy at all It always feels that way when randomly saying hi to people you don't know, but really, it's never as bad as it seems. How are you, Felicia? I'm Eric, I'm the forum admin. You'll be seeing plenty of me around. Good to meet you!
  25. We'll keep it spoiler free. This topic might still be too much.
