  1. I would like to announce that the Coppermind is finally finally back!
  2. Hey, just a heads up, I'm moving this to Creator's Corner. Fan Fiction should be reserved for actual fan fiction; original works can go in Creator's Corner. (That's not intuitively obvious, sorry about that.)
  3. I would like to announce that I have a memory of a goldfish and completely forgot to delete my test topic. ...Oops.
  4. I've figured out the misconception. If you are the topic's creator, you click Edit on the initial post there. Now, on the in-line editor you won't see an option to edit the topic title, but if you click "Use Full Editor", it will be there. This probably made a lot more intuitive sense on older versions of the forum that did not have such an in-line editor.
  5. I'm just noticing this now (I'm on top of things clearly) but I just checked the forum permissions and you should definitely be able to edit a topic's title. Is this still an issue or did it get magically resolved?
  6. I finally finished Mass Effect 3, and luckily for me, I delayed so long that I got the Extended Cut endings. And I must say, I really liked the end. I don't think the end was a Deus ex Machina. That would imply that it was not foreshadowed, and it was very clearly foreshadowed that 1. The Crucible can focus its energy in different ways, and Hackett isn't quite sure which one it will be, and 2. The existence of something controlling the Reaper. So both the Catalyst and the need to make a decision are all there. Besides, the Crucible was worked on for many, many cycles. I can believe that it is very advanced--beyond what Shepard could possibly know, so it didn't feel space magicy to me at all. Ny one quibble. I personally think that having the Catalyst--something that controls all the Reapers and sets the cycle into motion--manifest as a child was something of a mistake. I mean, I get why they did it, because of the continual dream sequences with the young boy. Still, I expect beings like that to be... more impressive, I guess. Like a Vorlon from Babylon 5, or something. The voice of a small child doesn't instill the importance of this all. Wait what? What original ending? What talk of dark energy? I'm not all up to speed on the internal workings of BioWare, so educate me. It's been a while since I've played Mass Effect 2, but I didn't think there was much there that foreshadowed the true motive of the Reapers. I think the ending thematically fit with the series. The conflict with the quarians and the geth, which become an increasing forcus for everything. You'll also note that the Protheans dealt with this same conflict with synthetics. I felt it had a very nice theme, and was very thought-provoking.
  7. I really love the Foundation trilogy. I also recommend the fourth book, Foundation's Edge, but I understand why some people didn't like it as much as the original trilogy.
  8. I fixed it this brute force way: increasing memory_limit. What could go wrong??? I'm not seeing this error any longer on any of my browsers. Let me know immediately if this appears again.
  9. Hey guys, could I ask a favor of you? I did something to fix the wiki (which didn't even work) and now i'm getting error messages like this: This error message appears at the very bottom of the forum and has a font color that blends in with the site, so you may need to highlight the text to see if it's there. Tell me the exact error message you get, the browser you used, and the page you were on. I most often get it on the Home and Forum page, though I get it elsewhere as well. Chrome has the error, Firefox does not seem to. Thanks for your help. Whatever the error is, it is non-critical and the site seems to be functioning perfectly fine. The second error often has a different number value, so don't let that faze you. EDIT: I have now encountered this error when trying to edit posts. Posts do in fact edit, but when you click "save changes" the edit dialog doesn't disappear. Refresh the page and it will work. That said, in some cases (like this particular edit) I do not see said error. Obviously if you see this error anywhere please post here as soon as possible.
  10. Happy birthday Kim (dhalagirl)!
  11. They are different worlds. There is no quote which says this is a multiverse (other than the three different Realms), and there's one that said you can use space travel to reach other worlds.
  12. It's here! It was totally intentionally bi-weekly, right? Sure. This episode we talk about stuff about Emperor's Soul, as well as Realmatics. We apologize sincerely
  13. You know the sophomore slump, where the sequel is never as good as the first in a series? In this episode of Shardcast, we desperately try to avoid the sophomore slump with quotes and a better outline. Then, of course, everything Splinters. Fortunately, Kerry is able to put it together again and it's totally seamless. No awkward pauses or forced segues here, no sir. This week, we are discussing The Emperor's Soul, the cosmere novella which comes out in November, and speaking of souls, we also talk about the Spiritual, the Cognitive, and the Physical. That's right, we are digging into everything we know about Realmatics. So, of course, it comes out disjointed, because we pretty much know nothing about Realmatics. Fortunately, Will is here and adds crustaceans and waffles. Because you know what Realmatic Theory needs? Waffles. Apart from the madness, we impromptu theorize about Hoid worldhops, and come up with a darned good explanation about it and Shadesmar. So sit back, jump in a pool, and hear some mysterious voices: Shardcasty voices. The quote-filled outline for this episode Spoilers: A big Hero of Ages spoiler, with some Elantris, Warbreaker, and Way of Kings ones as well. 0:40 - Steelheart to be released Fall 2013 1:45 - Shadows for Silence May Be Cosmere 3:15 - CraftyGames has been working on Alloy of Law Supplement 3:50 - Mistborn: Birthright had a playable demo at E3 4:25 - Writing Excuses: Project in Depth - The Way of Kings 5:51 - The Emperor's Soul is coming out by Tachyon Publications in November 8:03 - The Emperor's Soul is on Sel 9:43 - Introduction to Realmatic Theory 26:30 - Three Parts of Magic
  14. You can upload .docs. I'm going to see if I can change the accepted files that can be uploaded, but just do that. Test.doc
  15. What file type?
  16. You should be able to attach files; in order to do so you can't use the Fast Reply box at the bottom, use the Add Reply button and the Attachments thing should be there. Let me know if that doesn't work.
  17. Happy birthday Monica (moru)!
  18. I am highly certain it is not a Shardworld, but I don't have a quote for you on that one.
  19. After a long, exciting* day and a half, I am fairly sure I have ascertained the issue that has been plaguing the site: it's the wiki. But Eric, you've had the new server for almost a month and the wiki hasn't caused any problems until yesterday, how can it be the cause of the problem? you ask. Well... that is a very astute question. I honestly have no idea. Most all of our bandwidth and traffic is on the main 17th Shard domain, not the Coppermind anyways. The wiki shouldn't be the problem. Shiro, however, spits on puny mortal logic. Apparently the wiki--though getting much less usage than the main site--has been taking up the majority of CPU power. How much? Well, yesterday at least, the top three server processes were all the index.php page of the wiki, using about, oh, 88% of the CPU of the server. I was kinda shocked, to say the least. I've gone back through our Daily Processes for the month, and there's a curious thing: it's about every other day when the wiki is a big process (on "off" days, the top processes are various PHP and SQL thingys.) When the wiki is a big process, though, it dominates the server. My current theory is that the wiki freaked out too much yesterday, thus overloading the server. This made page load times abominably slow, eventually requiring the server to be rebooted and such (and other exciting [REDACTED] but aren't super important right now. Basically, yesterday kind of sucked for all of us, trying to scramble around to find what was doing this). Late last night, the site seemed like it was back to normal, but then about 4ish Mountain Time, it started becoming ludicrously slow again and everything died. The site just came back just long enough for me to turn off the wiki. I strongly suspect that this will immediately help with uptime. Rest assured, everything on the wiki is perfectly fine and still there. We are just testing if this measurably makes things better for the site, but obviously you won't have access to it for a bit. As far as I can tell this early in the morning, the answer is a resounding yes. The server feels faster than ever and resource wise we are using way less of the CPU than I've seen in a very long time. This is all very shocking--I honestly thought it was the forums and all its modules which were using the CPU power, but apparently it's all the wiki's fault. Who knew? It's all quite mysterious. You would think at 4am, with very limited people online, that the wiki wouldn't stress the servers out at all. And you'd also think that since it's been a fairly slow month that there's no reason for the wiki to suddenly freak out enough to destroy the site yesterday. So, there you have it: the Coppermind is down for a bit. The wiki is immensely important to the site, so don't worry, it'll come back soon. We need to run some tests and such. Fair warning, there may be more downtime this week as we test different things. But for today for sure, the Coppermind is down, and cross your fingers that the rest of the site runs okay. We apologize deeply for needing to shut it down. Trust me, we like going to the Coppermind as much as you do (mostly to lament how many stubs there are, but whatever ) *exciting=frantic
  20. We're not just having one ShardCast, but actually three! We have the main ShardCast, but then we will have ShardCast: Companion, which will have Josh and Mi'ch doing readthroughs and analyses of the books themselves. Then, finally, we will have an RPG podcast (currently untitled, we're working on it) with Kerry, Matt, and I, where we discuss, primarily, our Mistborn RPG, other forum RPGs as they come (eventually), and things like the Mistborn Adventure Game. The idea behind the RPG cast is to explain the vastness of MBI and make the learning curve a lot less harsh. That's mostly what we will discuss in the beginning.
  21. Haha. I do really appreciate the criticism, though. I do think it's going to take us a while to get us into a really good groove with how to run this, so we're trying all sorts of things. I think the problem largely came from us picking a really challenging topic to convey in a coherent manner. We'll see what you all think! Haha. Psh, "it's too long!" "it's too short!" Make up your mind, people! I kid, I kid. I hear what you're saying, Strawberry. I listen to some long form podcasts and they are great. But, at least we discovered today, that podcasting that long is exhausting. 40ish minutes may be the sweet spot. (I can pretty much guarantee that at least the RPG podcast we do will be that long, if not the longest podcast we have) You mean a section in-podcast talking about listener feedback? Hmmm. I mean, we will definitely have a mailbag episode, and also we will eventually stream the podcasts live, like UStream, so you guys can complain to us in the chat there The podcast isn't on iTunes yet. We're working on it. Also, Vin with Lucario is freaking perfect.
  22. Brendan - We tried outlining more this week. It didn't go very well.
  23. You get mad upvotes for cursing by Arceus.
  24. I can only say one thing. RAFO.
