I would like to announce that in both March and April, 17th Shard received over two million hits for the first time ever. And April isn't even over yet...

Turn off the 'click on an image' popup.
Chaos replied to Phantom Monstrosity's topic in Tech Support
Seems like it's a purely Firefox bug then. My IE10 testing also works. You know, I used to like Firefox, but that was before they did rapid releases and I just got sick of it... EDIT: That isn't to say I'm saying "screw Firefox users," of course XD More I mean that, clearly the IPB functionality on this should allow right clicking before the pop-up appeared, and frankly, I have no idea how I could fix it for solely Firefox. So Firefox needs to get off its butt and fix it XD -
I'm pretty sure they haven't ever discussed third person objective. Honestly, I had to look it up to answer you, because I hadn't really hard of it. It definitely doesn't seem like Brandon's cup of tea, that's for sure.

Turn off the 'click on an image' popup.
Chaos replied to Phantom Monstrosity's topic in Tech Support
Yeah, I don't like how it does it for every image. But, you can still right click on an image and get the normal image options. It's only when you left click first and the pop-up appears that you can't. -
This. In fact, we can check exactly how much that disparity is: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/index.php?app=reputationpoints Notice how low negative reps are by comparison. This is a little misleading though, since we had a member (Zucchini) who was banned and he had like -30 rep. Man, and he so deserved it. If ever there was a case of legitimate downvoting, it was to see how quickly the community determined that he was an irredeemable jerk. In any case, uh, I may have accidentally deleted his account when I was deleting banned spambots. Oops. So that's why he wasn't in the list. Even still, in the case of the most blatantly horrible member we had, he couldn't get that many downvotes. This is probably because if someone really has gotten that many downvotes, they've probably broken the rules and warrant banning, which in this case they did. So, the people with negative rep don't get much time to accumulate it. But I think you bring up an excellent point Voidus: generally your rep will be, on average, an increasing function, and that the only posts that were downvoted may require some introspection for possible improvement. I do feel downvotes can be used as a learning experience when properly and sparingly used.

And it's also a definite example on how, uh, liberal we can be with upvotes. (I promise we are liberal with others too!)

Thank you for your feedback Yados. I think Josh and Will adequately explained my general support of downvotes. I do feel it can be conducive to good discussion. Can it be abused? Certainly, and I think I speak for every admin that we definitely do not want or tolerate downvote abuse. I do believe that reputation is a self-correcting thing, and that 17th Shard is an incredibly nice community overall. I have faith in our members that if they feel something is downvote worthy, they downvote it. And, if other members see a post that does not warrant a downvote, then I see that post being upvoted, to equalize it out. That happens a ton. I know I always make a point to be liberal with my upvotes and do that all the time. When people have good ideas, I always upvote them. I think the issue is a lot less understated than you think. I have seen more in the past week or so (like two instances). I certainly don't think it is indicative of a larger trend at this point. We've talked things over as admins and have agreed that a -1 reputation shouldn't warrant a giant red flag. We do want people to feel welcome. We'll be changing the reputation bar to display as grey between -5 and 5, so that -6 and below will be red, and 6 and above will be green. The title for that will stay "17th Shard Trainee". We think that will be better. I'm planning to get that changed tonight or tomorrow. As for some of the other issues: we'd love to be able to make it so you can change your vote after you've given rep, but we can't do that right now. If you're feeling especially guilty over a downvote, feel free to go into their recent posts and give them two upvotes. We also can't separate out the two types of rep, as nice as it would be, it's just not going to be doable right now. I would also argue that if we had positive-only reputation, then people would ask the ability to downvote stuff. One way or the other, no matter what we do, someone's going to be unhappy. I mean, how many Facebook pages are there asking for a Dislike button? A freaking lot.

I'm almost absolutely positive that a reliable, very canonical source that gold can in fact steal Feruchemical health, and I know I was the one who asked Peter if it was a mistake about pewter stealing health instead. He said it was not an error. So, I am fairly sure that both can steal it. I could be like 5% wrong because I don't remember where I got that idea about gold stealing it, but I do remember being very surprised that two different metals could steal the same Feruchemical attribute, which I would not have thought if I wasn't absolutely sure gold also could steal health. EDIT: That said, I'm totally okay with the change on the Coppermind that pewter steals health until we figure out exactly where that gold citation came from, as pewter is HoA canonical. Once we can cite it, we'll add that gold does as well.

Theory: Adonalsium cannot be put back together again
Chaos replied to WeiryWriter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
A very well thought out theory. I like it a lot. However, Senor Feesh does have an excellent counterpoint, so I can't espouse it quite yet. Upvotes to both of you though -
Despite you linking to that post, I feel it is common courtesy that in a new theory topic to fully make your argument in the new topic you are making, even if it just copying and pasting the argument you made elsewhere. It just makes reading this topic alone much easier, say, months down the line. EDIT: Thanks for doing that, Isomere!

Kelsier would have begun to talk to Spook after Spook removed his spike. This intuitively makes sense, since when the spike is inside Spook, Ruin can speak to him through the Hemalurgy. But, after the spike is removed, Kelsier--temporarily holding the power of Preservation, opposite power of Ruin--can finally get through to Spook.

Brandon's statements on Harmony's power, and a theory
Chaos replied to TheOneKEA's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I would imagine that Splintering makes things at least a lot harder to hold the Shard itself, as you'd need to pick up each individual Splinter and put it back together. Whereas if Sazed died, any random dude could just pick up Harmony. That's easy. (Well, at least, if someone picks up Harmony fast enough) Man, my mind is still blown by that, since I've still grouped them as Ruin and Preservation, instead of Harmony. Crazy. I think your idea Morsk is pretty sound. I need to think more about why Odium fears it, though. -
Brandon's statements on Harmony's power, and a theory

My mind is blown. This is amazing. -
I would love such functionality too

The staff has taken care of the issue privately, and so I would like this topic to remain on the topic at hand, not downvotes. I would also like to make a comment about downvotes in general, unrelated to this topic. As always, I encourage members to take the reputation of a post to be sort of the "community average" of opinion on said post. The vast majority of the time, if someone does not "deserve" a downvote, many members will upvote to correct for inappropriate downvoting. So, it really is a community average. And if the community average is less than what you would like, then I encourage anyone who is downvoted to take a deep breath. Maybe go get a drink of water. Then, come back and look hard at your post, and think of it as a learning experience. What can be done to improve? And, as always, we are on the lookout for people who indiscriminately downvote a member's posts and other abuses.

Which Brandon Character Would You Date?
Chaos replied to Chaos's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Not to be that guy, but carbon dating only works once the subject you are dating has died -
Dang. Nice job Kurk. Well, when you put it in terms of Shashara, that makes sense XD

It should be fixed. At least, to be consistent with the coloring of the main site. There was some bizarre skinning issue that prevented the mobile links from getting coloring.
-
I love this because I can totally tell this guy, in addition to doing research of his own, totally used the Coppermind XD Because the list is exactly the same as the Coppermind's, he links to the Navani notebook Coppermind article, and a few other small things haha. I love it, because that means the wiki is actually being useful.
-
I knew you meant the mobile site You can still view the mobile site on the desktop, which was what I did. I'll see if I can change the coloring for the links; it seems like a coloring issue not related to IE10, so easily fixable.
-
This will be a bit nontrivial for me to test since I do not have a WP8 device. However, I did load the mobile site on IE10 on the desktop, and links seem to work just fine. The way I understand WP8, IE10's rendering engine is the same on both phone and desktop. I clicked a link to Reddit in the Reddit AMA thread and it opened in a new tab like you'd expect. Do the links not appear at all, or do they just not send you anywhere? Or, perhaps, do they open in another tab entirely?
-
You should make an entire gallery album of them *nod nod* I mean, we have that Gallery module, and this would be great for it, haha.

Man, I have no idea what this could be. But I bet it has to do with these "subtle forces":

I'm changing my question list, in light of new info about the southern continent. Namely, Windy and I don't know what it means how: (From here) To me, this implies that the Metallic Arts are functionally somehow in the southern continent. But that's kind of crazy, so I'm going to try and get a bit more of a clear answer on that. So, my questions are now both magic related: 1. You have said the Scadrians on the southern continent does have interaction with the Metallic Arts, but use them in very different ways. Does this mean there are different, for example, Allomantic abilities for those Scadrians? Or is it more a cultural thing? 2. Why does giving your Breath to another person not require color? Every other Command does. Hopefully this will result in some good hints or info.
