As you may know, I’ve been creating an empire - a real place would make an excellent addition.” Rebus smiled. “If you really do want a planet, I can make you one out of whole cloth - or you could use your Narration. You see, there are a number of dissidents who hate me and refuse to be brainwashed into forgetting I rule them - as well as the more Thread-aware among my citizens, who think it’s strange they don’t inhabit a blasted wasteland.” Ivisyre searched Rebus's gaze for a moment. They saw a lot more than they once did... Perks of being a Narrator. "Alright. You can have it on one condition. One binding condition, Narrator to Narrator." They rose to their feet, walking down the steps at the foot of the throne towards Rebus. "Sequence's avatar will never set foot here," Ivisyre said with a somewhat content smile. "And neither will Ookla the Unintelligible, for that matter," they added. "Should you ever allow them to, dominion will return to me, and I will simply... destroy it." They extended their hand to Rebus, dark mist pooling in their palm. "Agree and the planet is yours." They cocked their head to one side, thinking for a moment. "If you create a palace here after it's yours, perhaps make a sparring ring." They smiled a sharp-toothed smile. "You could certainly use the practice." Edited January 29 by Sequence

What does that have to do with . . . with anything? He's my enemy." You are not the Protagonist. It is not your right, or your responsibility. It is not your duty to slay the Antagonist. Cricket blinked again. "That . . ." He was not the Protagonist. This was true. He glanced at Redemption, pulsing amidst the stone. He'd had to let go, in order to keep Redemption. Let go of his guilt over his friend's death. Why couldn't he do the same for Rebus? Why must he avenge them, if he had moved on? He was not the Protagonist. Another should come, would come and defeat Rebus, defeat the Antagonist. So why stop the natural order of things? If he slew Rebus here, the entire Thread could be imbalanced. He could risk anything. Cricket . . . you have done well. Served valiantly. Now let others come in, finish your work. You've done what you can. You are not the Protagonist. He glanced one more time at Rebus, lying on the stones, and for the first time noticed how pitiful he seemed. Any vestige of former glory had faded from the form before him. Then, he sighed. "If it is what you wish." His fingers loosed on the grip of his sword, and the blade clattered to the stones. He knelt on one knee before Rebus.
