Inkwell nearly jumps when Myles appears behind him.

9/10mmHB#2 considers its own agenda. You would have to provide me a character to inhabit. I can’t exist without one. And preferably one that won’t resist me, or if you can… remove part of it, somehow.
and inkwell, don’t worry about it.

"I'm certain I or my acquaintance would be able to provide such a character. All I need right now is your preliminary agreement to such a deal, if we decide it is in the best interests of our competition. If we could free you, no strings attached, you would accept this and allow us to do what we wish with Inkwell?

“Excuse me,” Inkwell said, stepping off to the side some yards away. “I need to have a serious conversation with my inner demons.”

”9/10mmHB#2, what. the. heck. Are you talking about? You sound like a storming antagonist. Provide a character without like, a mind or soul or something?”

Spoiler

You can relax, Inkwell. You’ll be free of me soon.
I accept.

"Excellent!" This time, the voice was audible to Inkwell as well, perhaps even recognizable if he'd been listening in when Pree had spoken to Ribbon. "I'm glad you agree. I'll talk this over with my acquaintance, and we'll get back to you soon."

“I don’t know that’s possible,” Inkwell yells back to the group.

You are so naive, Inkwell.

"No need to yell," she said a a perfectly normal volume, which he could hear clearly.

Alli sat on the cliff, facing away from the sea, and watched them all in a daze.

Myles, curious and simply watching the conversation, walked over to Alli, seeing her sitting apart. "Hi there. My name's Myles. What's yours?"

"Alright. Inkwell." She tried to shake the red off of her face before addressing him. "I'm going to help you, okay? Just focus on my voice..."

She slipped in a mental block between Inkwell and 9/10'. It wouldn't last forever, but it would give him the pause he deserved.

"Can you still hear me?"

“Why don’t you all stop worries about the voices on my head, murderous or not? Weren’t you talking about narrators, and how to kill them? If Rebus follows me, I would like to know how to stop him. Oh, by the way. I ticked off Rebus and didn’t die. So that’s good.”

Spoiler

9/10mmHB#2 suddenly has an intense headache, and passes out. Somehow.

Fog stared at him.

Regulus found himself swelling at Arayna's praise. "Your help would be... much appreciated." He said. "This is my um, my first dragon that I've killed-er, fought. So... yeah, thanks." He quickly turned to peer past the stalagmite in order to hide the blush that rose to his cheeks at the awkward way he'd stumbled over words.

The dragon had, owing to a combination of poor eyesight and the overpowering scent of smoke in the room obscuring any whiff of human that its ancient nose could have detected, concluded that its swipe had successfully killed the adventurer, and gone back to sleep.

"Oh-" Arayna seemed to deflate slightly at the lack of dragon kills under the young hero's belt, but she refused to despair. "Well, this one is really old, so it would make a great dragon to start with!" Peeking around the other side of the stalagmite at the sleeping dragon, she looked around the cavern, trying to think of a plan. "There are a few other good stalagmites around I could hide behind, this dragon is blind and seems to react more to sound. I could run about and throw some of the larger bones about to make more confusing noise. And you can fight the dragon while I distract it." She glanced back at the young hero, with a questioning look.

“His author wasn’t present. So I immobilized him and cut a rift out of there.”
