So I came up with this Epic

Name: Riley Henderson

Epic Name: Is still trying to come up with one. Has to be "cool."

Primary Power: Can transfer heat energy between objects. Ex: Can freeze things by drawing the heat from it, can melt things by drawing heat to it, etc.

Secondary Power: Has a virtually infinite capacity for heat.

Passive Power: Can see heat signatures (thermal vision).

Backstory: Is 19. Up until 11th grade, Riley had an affinity for chemistry. Did very well in his class. However, he was expelled from school following his Rending, during which he caused the water pipes in the school building to explode. Two students died in the incident before Riley was detained by authorities. Due to his age and his previously clear record, Riley was allowed to go free, but was expelled from school and was placed under surveillance. Now he works at a kiosk in the Sherwood Park Mall.

Yeah 'near-infinite' is definitely problematic, this pretty much makes them stronger than one of the strongest Epics in the country. Also unless he's redeemed then as mentioned he should be too corrupted to 'blend in' well.

Alright. What about "above-average?"

Above what average? Because a normal persons capacity for storing heat is not very high at all.
I'd say it's best to tie it into the primary ability, at their maximum capacity what kind of area could they melt/explode? Or what kind of area could they freeze when taking the heat from things? How quickly can they store/release?

(Note: I do tend to like more specifics compared to others so don't feel compelled to answer this if other people are in favour of the character)

Primary Power: Can channel heat energy between objects via touch (drawing heat from one thing to another thing), and can gather and release heat energy from self. When acting as a conduit, heat transfer up to maximum is near instantaneous, but can continue to transfer heat at maximum capacity, but at a rate of 30 kJ per second. By doing this, the target object can collect much more heat energy than he could transfer at once.

Secondary Power: Thermal Resilience. Maximum temperature is ~2500 C.

The specific heat capacity of the human body is ~3.5 kJ/(kg.K), and water has a specific heat of 4.184 kJ/(kg.K). Steel is .49 kJ/(kg.K).

At the specific heat capacity of a normal human, he could theoretically transfer 591.3 MJ at once, if he went from maximum to average body temperature.

If he theoretically transferred all of that energy into the air immediately around him (3.87 cubic meters), that the temperature of that air would increase by ~164726 degrees Celsius.

That is very specific... I like it :D

Sounds reasonable, would still be a pretty powerful Epic but not Obliteration levels of notoriety.

A release of 591.3 MJ in heat energy is approximately equivalent to the yield from 140.8 kilograms of TNT exploding. Depends some on where the energy is released, but in general I would say the destructive force is roughly on the order of magnitude of leveling a building.

So, Obliteration lite. Interesting.

Riley's backstory, v.1

Quote

Under the extended protection of the Albertan government, Sherwood Park proceeded with life as normal following Calamity. Riley Henderson was able to continue school, one of the few things he actually enjoyed. Riley wasn't a very popular kid in school, and had an unfortunate combination of acne and teen angst. However, he loved the sciences, especially chemistry. It was his "thing". The year after Calamity, when the first Epics rose to power and began to exert their dominance over the city, the school year was a little rough. Often, school was cancelled to protect the students from a possible Epic attack. However, once the boundaries of the ruling Epics had settled, the Albertan government was able to stake claim over Sherwood Park.

So Riley was able to lead a life better than most in Edmonton, or Olympia Polaris, if you wanted to call it that. Unfortunately, that changed one day in 11th grade. Riley was walking down the hallway between class changes at Salisbury High, when he stumbled. He gathered his books and looked up, and suddenly he could see the heat coming off the other students. He could see the warm air from the heater. And he could draw upon it.

Riley didn't remember much that happened afterwards, other than the report that Salisbury High would be closed indefinitely, and that he woke up later in a government holding cell with two armed guards facing him. They offered him a job, working with the feds. In return, they would spare his life and set him free, but he would answer to them. Riley looked at the guns they were holding and agreed.

He worked with the government for a year. They divided his time between a holding cell, a examination table, and incinerating whatever the feds told him to. The first week it was interesting. The second week he grew bored. The third week he was frustrated. During a mission about a year after he was detained, he escaped. They had attached a tracking band to his ankle, but it was no match for over a thousand degrees of concentrated heat. Since then, he's been hiding out in Sherwood Park, unsure of the world outside, and always wary of being found.

Hmmm. You're right. I just need some sort of reason for Riley to be hanging around. Because Sherwood Park is much more controlled than the rest of town due to the influence of the feds, I'm struggling to find a good hideout for this guy, or someplace where he would blend in with the rest of the population.

If you want, he can hang out with Nicro.

Yeah, I didn't realize that you wanted to be near sherwood park.  I just thought you thought it would be convenient.  EDIT: Just read winter's post.  Oh dear.  What have I done! :o

It was a good post and good to see some growth in Red.  Calamity knows she needs it!

I'm sorry....?

The only thing I'm worried about is the relationship intensifier thing.  Because in a month, or a year, Red will REALLY, REALLY hate her.  That probably won't come up in this RP though.

Well, we could run a Season 2 of WHiE, if it goes successfully and we come to some sort of "season finale" and conclusion we all agree upon (which in itself would be an achievement). Season 2 could be a few weeks/month afterwards the current RP's events.

But that's way to far ahead to be thinking about.

If history is anything to go by I'll probably end up writing most of them yeah.

Great RP so far guys.

Both jobs just got insane, but I’ll try to finish up the Knox escape and Orbit reply scene tonight.

Ive also got a character in mind who might want to join the MEC. He’s a vanilla who acts a fair bit like an epic to gain a combination of respect and safety.

Hey guys, I'll be out of town and unable to post for the next week. Sorry.

However, I'll try to check in when I can, but don't expect anything new in the RP thread from me.
