Curious Anamaximder he/him Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Yeah, it's rage-inducing on a number of levels. First off is the fact that kids can get seriously ill or die from these diseases that they were previously vaccinated against, meaning those deaths were very much preventable. And then there's the vaccinate-versus-autism angle: You're literally saying that you would rather your child become seriously ill or die than be on the autism spectrum. Don't open unless you want to be angry: Seriously, it's pretty offensive, especially because I know there are people on the spectrum here. For a while, she suspected I had Aspergers, which she thought I got from the first round of infant vaccines. See, I had a pretty severe allergic reaction to the first two rounds, so she skipped the last one. Although I think she made the right choice there—because I was obviously allergic to some of the ingredients and exposing me to them one more time couldn't have been a good idea—she went on to believe that those first two rounds gave me Aspergers, and that if she had approved the last round, I would have been "severely autistic." Translation: "You are broken, just like every other child on the autism spectrum. We need to get rid of vaccines so that those children won't be broken anymore." I don't think I have Aspergers anymore. I did for a while, because I had trouble socially….but I looked at the symptoms in another light, and I fit precious few of them. I am a Aspie, and I could punch your mother in the face right now. 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 (edited) "Funny" story: a friend of my sister-in-law was bragging about how much more she knew then health professionals because of her motherly instinct, so not vaccinating her children and taking them throughout south America was the best thing to be done. (This was on Facebook, for clarification). I told her she was a terrible and abusive mother (told you this subject angers me). So my sister-in-law complains to my brother that I was rude to which he replied, "Well, he was right, though". Thus, attracting all the outage to himself. As far as the spoilered part: There's a huge difference between a bonafide medical concern and being an idiot. In the first case, you can point out, say, an allergic reaction and consult with the doctor. In either event, a trained professional is involved. As far as claims of being on the autism spectrum: my instinct is to ask whether that diagnosis was made by a professional or if it was just a Wikipedia informed statement. Your mother falls in the latter group: she has no qualifications to make any of her statements, but does so because she feels the world should make sense to her. Any way, time to listen to a porcupine Taking unvaccinated kids through South America. What can possibly go wrong? It's like the Fourth Doctor said: "The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering." I don't know if you've seen College Humor's "If Google Were a Guy" series, but my mom is just like the lady from one of them: LADY *in a self-assured tone*: Vaccines cause autism? GOOGLE: Well, I have one million results that say they don't, and one result that says they do. LADY *taking the single pro-autism link sheet of paper and leaving the office*: I knew it. GOOGLE *calling after her*: Just because I have it DOESN'T MEAN IT'S TRUE!!!! I am a Aspie, and I could punch your mother in the face right now. It's pretty punch-in-the-face worthy. Oh, and Mestiv, that porcupine is adorable. Edited January 15, 2016 by TwiLyghtSansSparkles
Kaymyth she/her Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 And you think that would matter to her? She believes vaccines cause autism, for Harmony's sake. Just when I thought my opinion of your mother couldn't sink any lower... And then you go and quote the Fourth Doctor, giving more evidence of your awesomeness. How on Earth did this woman give birth to you? 2

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Just when I thought my opinion of your mother couldn't sink any lower... And then you go and quote the Fourth Doctor, giving more evidence of your awesomeness. How on Earth did this woman give birth to you? It's my desktop background. I have a rather odd way of coping with her un-logic: Whenever she says or does something to make me angry, I'll make an oblique sort of swipe against her. I added the Fourth Doctor background the day she said she thought my "unhappiness" was caused by my drifting away from the beliefs I was raised with. I added two Elsa wallpapers—one that says "That perfect girl is gone" and another that says "I'm never going back, the past is in the past"—to my phone after a particularly nasty tantrum on her part. And after she whined about how "you don't even want to live in the same ZIP code as us!" I bought an "I'm so glad I left my tower" bumper sticker on Etsy. And I don't know how we're related either. But I was born at home, so the switched-at-birth theory is moot. The true proof that genetics aren't everything. Thanks. 3
Orlion Blight he/him Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Fourth Doctor is best Doctor And here's some Alan Parsons angst for ya, Twi 1
Zathoth Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 (edited) On the topics on nonsensical genetics, my dads parents are both... theres no good insults for them that I can write on this forum without it being censored, so is his step-dad. My ex-best friends mom was something like Twis, except said ex-best friend was a lesbian... And then there is Twi, who is awesome, and her mom is... well... once again, no good names that I can write on this forum. So genetics are nonsense. Edited January 15, 2016 by Morzathoth

Have you ever heard about changelings?EDIT: Now, more seriously, are you sure you can't see any good qualities inbyour mother? Kaymyth she/her Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Kaymyth I still support your husbanding choices. He's a good one. He's such a good sport about the amount of time I spend on my crazy creative hobbies. Though in return, he gets a wife who shuns romcoms in favor of the latest nerd flick, so it's a win-win for us, really. 2

So you both made great choices then XD I dont understand how people can make it through romcoms, much less enjoy them...
Seonid he/him Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Ah, that magical moment when you realize that your new paradigm of instantaneous interstellar travel renders the very concept of strategic locations obsolete, thus causing you to rethink the map of the cosmos you've been putting together in your head. Yeah, I ran into that one too. So I sat down and figured out what it would take to have an FTL system that made strategic locations valuable again, and worked at it until I got something working. I probably ought to post stuff on that, too. When I get the Edassa worldbuilding thread up. I am actually working on it again, though, which is a good thing. Now that I have school to keep me busy, my creative juices are flowing beautifully again. Solution to writer's block: Stay in school forever In other random news, I finally came up with a good name for the background universe Edassa is set in. "The Thousand Realms." I like it, and I think it's just catchy enough without being overwrought - and it avoids even more of Seonid's crazy names from becoming front pagers. 1

And now I feel inadequate with the name of my extended universe being "The Seven Realms" . . . I've been meaning to get a better name, but the stuff I come up with like "The Septaverse" sound lame, out of place because the culture of people that worldhop (I don't have my own name for that yet) is in no way Latin based, and inaccurate because there's really 7½ realms anyway. DreamEternal Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 "The Septaverse" Reminds me of Septerra Core . My universe is still unnamed, but the planet most of my stories take place in is named Argina, and I am afraid it sounds too much like Argentina.
Zathoth Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 Meanwhile I am really proud of The Skyverea, it is a portmanteau of sky-universe-sea, which pretty much describes it.

You can always go the crazy way and name your world in Polish: Siedmioświat or Siedmioipółświat 1

So you both made great choices then XD I dont understand how people can make it through romcoms, much less enjoy them... I liked them OK when I was younger. Then I got to the point where I'd been a grown-up for about a decade and they all started wearing thin. I'm pretty 'meh' about most of them now. You can always go the crazy way and name your world in Polish: Siedmioświat or Siedmioipółświat Bonus: only Polish people are capable of pronouncing them.
Zathoth Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 Other ideas:Septelia The seven and a half realms Shura (Swedish Sju, which isnt really pronounced like that, but whatever) The seven and a three quarter realms Uralia (May have gotten that from Uranus) You see, just take words and do horrible things to them. Thats really my creative philosophy when it comes to everything: Take things and do horrible things to them. So translating them into Polish is a fantastic idea, probably. 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 You guys are all doing much better than I am. The only names I have for my 'verse so far are Spokaneverse (which will really only work for the first era; the next idea I had would take place partially in Arizona) or the Superverse, which sounds like something you order at a drive-thru.

QUOTA *Gives Honor Spren a shardplate* I think this is the best idea, let your fans be creative, if you end up with a stupid name it is at least not your fault 1
ThirdGen Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I had one called the "Betterverse." It was not an accurate name.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Mom, Pointing out a problem and saying "I'm not mad at you, but we have to problem-solve this" IS NOT SOLVING THE PROBLEM. All you're doing is saying "This is a problem, and now coming up with a solution is your problem." Man you suck.
