Mashadar Mistborn he/him Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 (edited) I was thinking about Patronuses. You know how they always represent something about the person's personality, or something that's important to them? Well, I wondered, what if someone were like a plant, wilting from a lack of water? That might be a cool metaphor.... And then I realized they would be a wizard throwing a potted plant at the dementors. Wizard: Expecto Patronum!*bonk* Dementor: Curse you, Planty the Potted Plant! Kaymyth she/her Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Let's face the facts, as much as I'd like my patronus to be something cool like a dragon, it's probably something far more ridiculous. More like a particular My Little Pony named Firefly cosplaying as Malcolm Reynolds. 3

I wouldn't mind a pug or another small dog. But I'd probably wind up with Planty the Potted Plant.

Hopefully, it's a heavy one like Words of Radiance. 4
Zathoth Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 You people are getting it all wrong. It is Harry Potted! And mine is still a cat, I am cute, sadistic, cuddly and evil. 5
Mistrunner Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 My patronus would be... uh... Donna Noble? I quite nearly quoted her just now. I was hugging my bros goodnight (with much protesting) and they are too skinny. "You go to give him a hug, you get a papercut!" 5
+Slowswift Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 I bet you (ribbit) can't guess what (ribbit) my (ribbit) Patronus would (ribbit) be! (...ribbit) 2

+Slowswift Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 (edited) Nailed it. Ribbit? Anyways, I was perusing some YouTube comments on a remix of Demons by ID and: "It's where Matt Damon hides" In other news, guess what I can't unhear? Edited January 2, 2016 by Slowswift 2
Mistrunner Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Ribbit? Anyways, I was perusing some YouTube comments on a remix of Demons by ID and: In other news, guess what I can't unhear? I saw one for a song called where a repeating phrase is "undo this storm."Control+z this storm.
Silverblade5 he/him Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 And I still can't quite nail down the plot of my main project. Or magic system, which I will be attempting to retool. I have no idea how the plot or magic will work, yet I can tell you the climate and fauna for each region in the setting. I do interesting things when avoiding facing writer's block. In that case, try writing a shenanigans plot line and see where it takes you. Don't outline. Write, then take out the stuff you don't want. 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 Last night I dreamed that Gilderoy Lockhart determined lycanthropy was of Feruchemy. What a weird dream, right? I mean, if anything, lycanthropy is connected to Hemalurgy. 2

TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 It seems more like a really weird effect of Lerasium to be entirely honest. It doesn't fit easily into any of the three systems, though its malevolent nature connects most easily to Hemalurgy. Though on second thought, it does seem oddly Allomantic in a lot of ways.

Though on second thought, it does seem oddly Allomantic in a lot of ways. It mostly resembles (Hero of Ages) the mistfallen. Like Allomancy induced to mistfallen it is through a violent possibly lethal process and it "adds" to the soul. Although, once you start thinking about it the criterias on Scadrial by which system is alligned to which Shard is rather weird. Edited January 2, 2016 by Edgedancer

Supposition 1: Magic is possible. Supposition 2: Access to magic is hereditary or tied to physical traits, and thus can be selected for. Supposition 3: Magic bestows benefits that are advantageous to life. Supposition 4: By mutation and natural selection, life is capable of acquiring any adaptation that is physically possible. Supposition 5: Any forms of life capable of harnessing a potent advantage will totally outcompete forms of life that are not. Kobold's Rule: Given time, life within a magical environment will evolve to harness magic for biological processes, from the largest megafauna down to the smallest microbe. Magic will permeate the ecosystem at every level. 4
Allomancy she/her Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 It mostly resembles (Hero of Ages) the mistfallen. Like Allomancy.... Who, me?... Ohhhhhh... the magyk. Heh heh heh. Speaking of Allomancy,... I am now a year older!! Though, technically, you don't automatically become a year older, you just classify.... ... Never mind. Here: I shall put it simply: It's my birthday. Tada! 8

Kobold King he/him Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 That is a load of assumptions. They hold true in most conventional fantasy settings.
DreamEternal Posted January 2, 2016 Posted January 2, 2016 (edited) They hold true in most conventional fantasy settings.Do they? I thought in most of then magic was tied to the presence of highter beings or to sapience, that is so far in the complexity ladder evolution can't guide many things towards unless they are close enough.I mean, your list treats magic as something achievable by evolution alone, independent of any external forces, that is linked to the celular level instead of especific tissues, organs and other more complex structures. Honestly, the only setting I can thing of that fits Kobold's rule on the top of the head is Roshar/the Stormlight Archive. Granted there are many fantasy settings that have "magical" creatures like giant spiders but they don't really evolve all that much to a specific magic or ecosystem and are more just stuff thrown in there because you can do that in fantasy.
