Kaymyth she/her Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 The length between your knuckle and your finger joint is convenient??? Who's foot? Who's hand? It's ridiculous. Metric works with nice round tens and it all makes sense. Isn't a foot subdivided into like 17 inches or something ridiculous? We have ten fingers. 10 20 30 add neatly and divide into tens and fives and twos and percentages. It's makes sense. It's logical. It's measured. Imperial is weird and random and how on earth do you know how long anything is and how many feet to a mile anyway? /possessive metric rant It's logical but it's hard to visualize for some things. Meters are too big to measure a human, centimeters are too small. There were no profanities or curse words or anything like that, this song is perfectly safe for kids... if only it wasn't about killing I personally can somehow understand, that people are used to Imperial Units (*imperial march playing in the background*). All right, it might be intuitive and convenient to measure things with your thumbs and other body parts, measure liquids using gallons (where the hell did those come from? 1 liter is 1 kilogram of water or 1 cubic decimeter, what is a gallon?). I can understand you prefer Fahrenheit (although when I read what temperature Fahrenheit chose to make it 0F I made the strangest face ). But why, oh why, do you have to use this crazy month/day/year notation for dates? ;( How can you sort anything using this format? How can you quickly tell which date was earlier? Why not use the most logical format there is: year-month-day or, the other, acceptable one, that is however useless if you want to sort anything: day.month.year? As a programmer I hate the mess you cause with the date formats Honestly, I think that if we switched to Celsius and I saw the thermometer dip into the negatives so many days in the winter I'd start having panic attacks. Negative temperature numbers are scary. Decimeters are a thing. We just can't be bothered to use them. Plus, it is much easier to jump between centimeters and meters than between inches and feet. See, even decimeters are too small for good height visualization. They're only about 4 inches long, and a foot is 12. Actualy, we generaly measure height in meters . See, that doesn't help, either. Tell me someone is 1.7 meters tall, and I just don't know how tall that is. Though again, that's more culturalization than cognitive capacity. I could tell you that I'm 5'6" tall, and you probably can't visualize that any more than I can visualize decimal places of meters. My mom might be. When I mentioned I applied for a job in Massachusetts, she immediately pointed out how non-religious and liberal the state is, hinting that those were legitimate reasons why I shouldn't want to live there. Your mom would hate me. 3
Zathoth Posted January 25, 2016 Author Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) 5'6 is 168 centimeters, I only know this because that's how tall I am. Edited January 25, 2016 by Morzathoth

As a programmer I hate the mess you cause with the date formats Going back to this because I missed it before. We arrange it in the way we say it: January twenty-fifth, two thousand fifteen. Plus we like to confuse people. It's funner that way. A comic from Murderous Maths illustrates this idea brilliantly. Different Characters in different colors. What shall we measure capacity in? How about 'gulps'? I think 'plops' sounds better. How about 'galooshes' for big amounts? Hang on! I've thought of a great trick! I've weighed out one ounce of water. Let's call it a fluid ounce. Brilliant! So simple! But the clever bit of the trick is that we'll have 20 ounces to the pint, 2 pints to a quart, and four quarts to the gallon . . . Can't you make it 10 ounces to a pint? And 10 pints to the gallon? It'd make the sums simple and be easy to remember. NO! Where's the fun in that? 2
Seonid he/him Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Coming back to my writing project after having been away for a week (due to homework, and a host of other busyness) is awful. I'm trying to remember exactly where I had intended to go with things. At least it's just worldbuilding, not plot, that has disappeared into the ether.

Stop trying to find logic in my madness! *cuddles her Imperial units of measurement* It'll be OK, preciouses....
ThirdGen Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 So yeah, the way to switch America to metric is to say "Can it! We tried your way, now you're gonna get everything in metric! Learn it or move back to nowhere!"
Zathoth Posted January 25, 2016 Author Posted January 25, 2016 I had to learn english, only fair you have to learn metric.
ChickenPlague he/him Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 My reaction when a recipe states amounts in glasses. Well this is a glass, but this is also a glass and it's 2 times larger. Oh no nevermind this third one's a completely different size. Oh and what's this? A glass of butter. Why yes this is logical. Now let me measure how many squadrons of flamingos I have. 1

ChickenPlague he/him Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Ok it might or might not have been glasses since I made them 2 months ago, but in my defense I had no standardized cups in the kitchen (I think). Also I converted it to metric (because of course I did) and ended up with ML of butter at which point I changed recipes.

Delightful Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Yes! The recipe didn't specify Fahrenheit or Celsius. *retreats muttering under her breath*
+Slowswift Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I think I heard someone say that Fahrenheit is how temperature relates to people, and Celsius is how it interacts with water. I don't know. The tumblr post explained it better.

I don't know. The tumblr post explained it better. Considering that we are about 60% water I'd say that celsius is pretty good. If water is boiling, chance is you will too, if water is frozen, chance is it is pretty cold. 1
DreamEternal Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I think I heard someone say that Fahrenheit is how temperature relates to people, and Celsius is how it interacts with water. I don't know. Water is much more important to people than what that silly Fahrenheit choose as the basis of his system.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Eh, America could switch to metric tomorrow and I'd adjust. It'd take some time to rewire my thinking, yeah, but I'm not terribly attached to either system. And methinks I'll order some used copies of Harry Potter on Amazon.

I don't know. The tumblr post explained it better.Fahrenheit makes more sense to measure temperature in the human body and weather. Its because 100°F is the average human temperature, fluctuates of course. Celsius measures water, so in experiments it works good because 0 is freezing, 100 is boiling. And Kelvin starts at 0 and goes up. 1
