Started Outer Worlds 2, and there's already a few changes from the first game I'm not a fan of.

Companions can't boost skill checks, which is making the level up process a pain as I agonise over which skills to prioritise. The one chance to respec is also way too early to tell if a build isn't viable, in my opinion.

I get this is probably to encourage replaying with different playstyles, but I don't have time to replay games of this size.

Anyone have recommendations for RPGs which encourage locking into a playstyle and then replaying with a different one but are also relatively short (say under 10 hours for a decent chunk of the content)?

Finished Persona 4 Golden. Mixed feelings about this one. Some of the new events I loved, some didn't do much for me. The concert event annoys me tho that's just nitpicking.

The new character feels... absent? If you don't deliberately spend time with her she might as well not exist. And the story attached to her is in a similar place. It's not a new story per se, but an addition to the plot of the original, but since that story was very much complete, it doesn't feel like this really adds anything. It starts suddenly, ends suddenly, and back to business as usual. I was confused when P5 Royal decided to make the expansion story independent from the main plot but I see now that's the better move.

About the new social link

Spoiler

I like it. A lot. It gives some needed weight to Adachi's character, even if its mere presence is a massive spoiler in plain sight.

The new Adachi scenes towards the end are weird tho. Both during the time you visit him before his dungeon, and in the accomplice ending, he gets really uh, theatrical, it's like watching a cartoon villain. Which is a far cry from the cynical, indifferent man we see once we do fight him. Overall a good addition though.

Also, speaking of nitpicks. The graphics and the music! HD textures were such a big mistake. The whole game looks so weird, especially the school and any place with grass. A picture of real grass does NOT work as a texture for an anime game.

As for the music, it's the dimming. Every time a character talks the music dims. Which is normal, I'm pretty sure P5 does it, but it's so extreme here. Volume goes so low it practically mutes the music. Vanilla didn't do that, why change it?

As I said, those two things are nitpicks, they're small stuff. But they're also constant. They remained annoying throughout the whole game, just minutes ago I was watching the final cutscene, and even then I was distracted by the music disappearing every couple seconds.

Epilogue was great. Not too long, just enough to give some closure. Or remove it maybe? It's a good thing either way.

Good game I suppose. There were as many good additions as there were bad ones, so that leaves it on par with Vanilla. Curious to see how much of this revision ends up in Revival.

What do people think of the announced God of War: Laufey?

I'm keen to play as Laufey but I feel like the whole 'afterlife for gods' thing kind of cheapens both Norse games.

Spoiler

I feel it takes away from the themes of grief and loss of the first game when Kratos and Atreus spend an entire game on the quest to effectively finish her funeral when she's still having adventures even if not with them. The tragedy of death (for someone non-religious at least) is that we can never see the deceased again, but then Faye is resurrected gameplaywise as soon as she is laid to rest.

Also, the whole point of the 'afterlife for gods' renders most of the Norse backstory moot, seeing as Odin's motivation is to know what happens to him when he dies or to avoid it. If mortals know what happens to them, surely at least one god would have made their way back. Especially considering that it's not just Aesir, but clearly Jotuns and presumably Vanir and maybe even Dwarves/elves who can go there. Surely people who can shift into animals and transport between realms effortlessly could have made their way out of the realm of the dead, as Kratos did several times.

I feel it would have been better as a prequel, tracking Faye's life and resistance against Odin and ending with meeting Kratos, giving birth to Atreus or even up to the point of her death.

I'm super hyped for it, I think the afterlife of Gods thing is a really cool idea.
