I am thinking about reading Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files". How are the books ?? I am sure about one thing; they are quite popular, and have decent scores on goodreads. Someone said that the first 3 books are quite weak as compared to the rest of the series.

What do you say ?

I'm re-reading Tuesday's with Morrie, and A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck. A Year Down Yonder is a childhood favorite of mine, it's a little like To Kill a Mockingbird without the race discussion.

Now Kaymyth is the resident authority on Dresden Files, but the first three are in my opinion ok. They are action filled short reads that while not very well written are still entertaining.

Book 4 and 5 are fantastic.

Finished Black Sun Rising a few weeks back.

Started and finished the Sword of Bayne trilogy--simple Amazon fantasy series I've had the first book of on my Kindle for about two years. Was surprisingly decent for what it was, Fantasy with a neat sci-fi twist.

Now I'm finally reading Childhood's End for the first time.

Morzathoth has it right - the first few are pretty formulaic, fun little romps.  They aren't bad, but aren't hugely amazing.  But as you progress into the series, you see Butcher's writing really start to mature, and a lot of the pieces that he sets into place early on start making more sense.

By the time you get to 5 or 6, things start getting really good.  When you hit the double digits, it's awesome and you can't stand the wait for more.

I really like the Dresden Files. Some books are stronger than others (#2, Fool Moon, has been my least favorite of the currently published ones, and the latest, Skin Game, is my favorite), but they're awfully entertaining. Harry Dresden is such a smart-aleck that it's impossible not to laugh at some of his lines. And Jim Butcher throws some really mind-blowing plot twists at you.

Aside from Jurrasic Park, were any of the film adaptations good actually? I watched Andromeda Strain, and good luck, it was awful. I feel like Prey or The Terminal Man could be good.

So far, very few of Creighton's movie adaptations were any good.

For example one of my favorite books of all time, Sphere got butchered. Bad bad bad movie.

Dresden is straight gold. Bks 1-2 are very meh esp 2. 3 was just as meh to me for the 1st half and then it takes off. Bk 4 on...oh hell yes!! Very worth your time. Try reading them back to back and you'll have the biggest blast doing so. There's 15 now plus some short stories which I've never read but they are all small easy to read bks compared to giant Malazan series.

Thanks folks !! Now onto buying Storm Front. Now let's see who the black mage is, and how stinking is Dresden's business. And yes, they are really short. Storm Front is only 384 pages. :) :)

Ok im currently listening to Contractor by Andrew Ball it is narrated by Luke Daniels and it is amazing.!!!!

I usually hate YA /SCI FI but The dialog is pure gold and it's turning into a fast favorite and i want to spread the word about it :)

RE: Dresden Files.

I sampled the first one, and I didn't like the content level there (first few chapters). Is that consistent throughout the books? If not, then I might give them a second chance.

Harry has a foul mouth (and so do some of the other characters) sporadically throughout the books, but that aspect is worst in book 2, Fool Moon. The first time I tried to read the series, I stopped in the middle of that one because I was sick of all the f-bombs. There aren't as many in the other books, but they're still there. Violence... book 2 was probably the worst for that too; there's a total bloody massacre in that book. As for sex, there is one very explicit scene in book 5, Death Masks, that I heard about from a review and purposely skipped. Other than that scene, it's mostly just Harry having occasionally lustful thoughts about beautiful women, in terms of sexuality.

So, yeah... They're definitely aimed toward an adult audience.

Just finished Sanderson's calamity, alloy of law, shadows of self, and Staveley's emperors blades and providence of fire (very very good)(all last 3 weeks). Reading bands of mourning, Jordan's Fires of heaven, and Gardens of the Moon at the moment.

Thinking about reading Robert Jackson Bennett's city of stairs, any thoughts? And how about Jasper Fforde, I'm a huge satire fan (love sir TP's discworld) but am afraid to dive in.

I keep forgetting that I have The Builders, but I remembered today and read it. Great little book, I have to say. It's like grimdark Redwall.

City of Stairs is great. Still haven't read the sequel, though I own it.

Finished Blood Meridian. Not sure if I need a palate cleanser or even how much of one I need.

Started reading a book I heard about at LTUE called "The Flux Engine" by Dan Willis. It's a steampunk western (now those are two words you don't usually hear together!), and I've found it quite entertaining so far. (I'm about halfway through.)

Licanius Trilogy by James Islington is lined up when i Finish Contractor by Andrew S. Ball.

I also plan a reread of The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks the fourth and final Book is out in a few months,

I highly recommend this Author to everybody but his style has more adultish themes and more Gritty than Brandons work so i warn you but his magic systems and action scenes are on par with Brandon and the dialogue... oh the dialogue.. Funniest i have read.

Lightbringer, to me, is a lot like a superior Warbreaker. I couldn't finish the second book because he kept putting f-bombs in, and I have a limit of two per book. They really are good though, so if you don't mind the language then you should try them. The violence is a bit above Sanderson's levels, a tiny bit, pretty close to Brian McClellan's Powdermage books I think.

Oh im sorry to hear you couldn't finish it! It just gets better and better!! I agree with you it's an amazing series, i can't say the F-Bombs bothered me too much, it seems to bother me more when the books are too 'clean', i have no idea why it just seems to grate at me.

Although some of Brandons work is an exception, like Stormlight Archive.

Brent Weeks has another series called Night Angel that's another one of my favorites of all time but there is language in that too so i won't recommend it haha. Yes. He has exceptional skill at violent and action scenes  :D

+1 Just because i like you and I'm feeling friendly  ;)
